moments in the mommyhood - all tangled up

mackenzie and i had a mommy/daughter day this weekend. the hubs watched harper and we went out to see tangled in 3d! it was mack's first time ever going to the movies and she was sooo good. we had so much fun and we both loved the movie. i think it was the perfect first movie to go see, it was a happy go lucky, music & laugh filled romp. not too scary like of some of the animated movies that have come out lately. plus mack loves rapunzel.

we had popcorn, snuggled in our seats, donned our 3D glasses and had lots of giggles. it was great watching her try to reach out and touch some of the 3D special effects, even i got caught up in it all. we've really been focusing on mack having lots of daddy one on one time and had completely forgotten about how she might feel to just have time with momma. it was nice and much needed for the two of us to do something different and fun together.

if you read friday's weekend wishes post you know how i feel about snow, but man, how can you resist how much she loves it? too cute. it was sure fun to see the pics that the hubby took of her enjoying our recent snowfalls. i was more than happy to hear her tales of wonder and be the one to warm her up and ohhh and awe over the pics with and not be the one outside freezing cold :)

did you see the owie on her head? i forgot to mention last week that during my blogging break my poor little wee one ran straight into the corner edge of our wall - hard. it was so loud i thought for sure she had just run a toy car into it or something. i never thought it would have been her head. needless to say she cut it right open and these pics are of it all almost healed up. i tell ya it's not fun to see that much blood from your child, especially when you are braless and in your pj's. both the girls were in pj's still and i just panicked. i had managed to get the bleeding under control & call my husband, but i have to admit i was freaking out. i had no idea how i was going to carry a 3 1/2 year old who's screaming, a 6 month old baby who's screaming, get my bra on, go down 4 floors in the elevator, walk to our underground parkade and then drive to the ER. not gonna happen. luckily my husband's coworker came to the rescue and drove him straight home so we could drive the girls to the hospital. she was very brave, got all fixed up and is no worse for wear. i wish i could say the same for myself...haha. i'm a bit traumatized and keep wanting to cry whenever i look at her little head.

how was your weekend? do anything fun? do you plan special one on one trips with your kids? what do you do with them to make it special? happy monday! get your cuppa joe or tea and let's chat :)

we've been snowed in most of the week here. well, snowed in may be a bit of an exaggeration, let's just say, we haven't been able to go out much due to the snow and our city trying really hard to deal with it (or not deal with it). i dislike snow. i might actually hate it. i don't like cold weather. in my daydreams i do. i dream that i can ski with the best of them (i'm scared of skiing due to being a klutz), sip hot cocoa by the fire gracefully (i always spill and have no fire), wear the most fabulous knit sweater and accessories (i look like a fluffy lamb), and sport that gorgeous fresh cheek glow (i get wind burn). so you see, snow and i don't get along. i slip, i fall, i get really cold and can't get warm again. i hate driving in it, i hate others driving in it. i hate cleaning off the car and warming up the engine. i hate wind chill and freezing rain. i will admit though that i love seeing my daughter love snow and won't take that away from her - i just let the hubs take her out in it instead. i also enjoy catching snowflakes on my tongue and making the odd snow angel and ok, getting in a snowball fight. unfortunately though, with all good comes some bad and with snow, well, i'm just done with the bad. i grew up in small town filled with a lot of snow for half the year and...yep, i'm done.

this week has been way more productive for me sewing wise. i got a few things finished and may just make my deadline for mail outs for handmade goodies. i'm crossing my fingers. i hope to get a lot more done this weekend, catch up with a good friend, cuddle up with the family and watch disney's "a christmas carol" with jim carrey, find my anne of green gables dvd, decide which stocking to make harper and work on the surprises i have coming for you all on the blog. what are you guys up to?

any of you have a love/hate relationship with snow? i hope i'm not the only one. fill me in on your plans? what are you making for xmas pressies this year? wishing you a fabulous, no snow filled weekend!

whipup 2011 calendar!!

ohhhh, lookie at what i got my hands on!!!! the third annual whipup.net calendar! a gorgeous, eye-candy, drool worthy, crafty goodness filled calendar from whipup! kathreen is one of my fave blogging ladies. her blog, if you don't already know it, is fabulous! it's one of my top resources for crafty inspiration, book reviews and tutorials. i always look forward to her weekly email newsletters as well. i'm so proud to have been featured on her site many times and i'm glad to get to talk about her here in return.

when i found about this calendar i thought "now isn't that perfect". i needed a calendar and i needed one asap. i love calendars. i like to try to attempt to be organized and use my calendar everyday. yes, i use my google calendar but it's ugly and i can't stare at it in awe during the day, nor can i hand write on it with happy faces and hearts. and now because kathreen rocks she is offering us fab folks two ways to buy this year's calendar:

option 1 - you can print the calendar out in 3 different formats - your choice! there's vertical, horizontal or vertical 2 and all are printed on a a4/letter size page. nice. easy. and guess what, it's only $5!!! now really, where can you get this kind of calendar for $5 and bonus, you get all 3 formats for that price! sounds like my kind of calendar. mine is going up right next to my inspiration board. the other perk about this kind of calendar is you can print this puppy out and gift it to some friends! what a fab stocking stuffer as well!

option 2
- your second option is to order the real deal, already made here at Redbubble and i bet it's real pretty!

ready to see who's featured....

recognize some of them? i spotted dottie angel right away, she is one of my faves and yep, there's elsie marley...swoon. each month features another project for us to swoon over. here's the rundown for whipup 2011:

make sure to pop over and tell kathreen how great she is and also check out her equally fabulous book "whipup mini quilts: patterns and how to for more than 20 contemporary small quilts", is there anything this momma of 2 can't do? go kathreen!

which month is your fave? do you have a favorite blogger featured? where do you hang your calendar? do you still use one?

christmas stocking pattern roundup

i got a comment on the blog a few weeks ago asking about a christmas dilemma - which kind of stocking to make? knit or sewn? i found it funny that i had been having an internal dilemma about the exact same thing when pop, along came the email. so thank you, loyal reader, for asking and while i don't have an answer for you (i haven't decided myself yet) here's a fun stocking roundup of some fun stockings to help you choose which you would prefer. i think i'm leaning towards sewn only because i seriously have no time to knit one at the moment and poor baby harper has no stocking.

for me, one of the most fun parts of xmas morning is my stocking. santa spoiled us in our house when we growing up filling our stocking with the most wonderful goodies. i seriously dreamed about that stocking every year. it truly was super exciting for me and even after growing up my stocking is still one of my favorite things about christmas. i love seeing others stockings (and of course filling them) and opening my own. so i hope you find one here that you love and get inspired to handmake a stocking this year!

*forgot to mention most of these are on ravelry.com, the best and most fun place online for knitters (in my opinion of course). you can friend me on there under "imstitched".

i do have a question for all of you ladies. this is a picture of what my stocking looks like. i've had the same one since i was little. they were handmade by a lady in the town i grew up in and she made both my sisters and my stockings. she has since passed away and i would love to find this mary maxim pattern to have on hand. my stocking is seriously huge and comes up past my knee - love it! i also love that it was made with love. anybody have any idea where to get this pattern now?

i'd also like to know what your favorite go to stocking pattern is? please add the link to the comments, i would love to put them in this post as a resource for us all. ohhhh, i can already feel the xmas fun starting...i heart the holidays!

readers faves:

mix-and-match socks
diamonds in the rough argyle
polka dot christmas stocking (i forgot to add this one)
knitted xmas stocking

it's time for a roundup...

i have a nice roundup coming your way today.....and it has to do with christmas! but first i had to get a teething, cranky, baby to bed that ended up with a tired, cranky momma in bed instead (you all know how it goes right) and oops, that momma passed out and didn't get her post finished. do you forgive me? hope so :) see you later today (this afternoon)..get your sewing machine or your knitting needles ready - it's time for a roundup!

there's someone new in my house....

there's someone new in my house. no, it's not a baby..haha, but it's close. it could the best earliest christmas surprise ever (or so i'm hoping). my cousin sent me an email last week for an ad on one of our local websites usedvictoria.com for a free serger! yes free! yep, you heard me right, free! now first, i freaked out and thought it was a joke then i decided to take my chances and phone the number. seems it wasn't a joke and this nice lady hadn't used her serger in a very long time and was making room in her sewing space. she was giving it away. would i like it? heck yes i would, but i calmed myself asked for the model number and brand, told her i would call her right back and then hung up.

what model is it? a pfaff hobbylock 786! ohhhhh, ok, something must be wrong....it can't be this good can it? so i called our local pfaff dealer (sawyer's sewing centre) and asked about the model, should i take it, will they service it, are parts available etc...basically the guy told me to grab it and it was a very good deal! so i called her back, thanked her immensely and picked the puppy up on saturday. now, yes, it's old, yes, it's dirty and dusty, and yes, discolored, but before you get grossed out, it's from oil heat. the machine looks to be in good condition and she had the manual (insert me happy dancing). i noticed when picking up the serger the sewing machine she was currently using and wowsa - it's a nice one! she said she had taken care of it when she used it but it had been a loooong time since she had. she quilts mostly now. so i brought sue the serger home - we're getting to know each other :P

so cross your fingers for me folks. i'm going to bring her in sometime to get made over and hopefully it can become useable and not cost me a ton of moula to fix up. a serger is something i have been dreaming about since i started sewing and i still can't even believe that i may have one!!!! squeal!!!! i do have to admit i'm scared of trying to figure it all out. santa must have thought i was a very good girl to bring me such a cool gift so early :) maybe it was because i sat through the movie "the search for santa paws" with mackenzie (don't watch it...it's horrible!).

****spoiler alert - if you are my nana or omi, do not read this!****

how was your week? i missed all of you. it was so weird not to blog for so long and i'm happy to be back. was my week productive? nope. was it stressful - yep. did i get my stuff sewn and knitted? not even close...haha. i guess i stupidly thought not blogging would help me find more time to sew...yeah right. i was wrong. it was life that get's in my way..haha. albeit it's not all bad things, i do love spending time with my kiddos, but it makes it hard to find the time i need to get all my goals accomplished. the hubs is doing school at night after he is done full time work and it's been very tiring on my end as well. i'm not whining, it's gotta be done, but the things i'm passionate about get put aside during this time as it's hard to do with the little ones. i know you can all relate :)

here's a few pics of some of what i did end up being able to get done that i can show you without giving away too many christmas presents:

this is the tea pot cozy pattern from retro mama. what do you think? i'm a little nervous. i would love to hear your thoughts. i'm new to quilting and still learning but i'm pretty proud of them myself. i think it's a project that combined a whole lot of new things for me to try. it pushed me out of my comfort zone a lot and i liked it. it was the first time i have quilted on something other than a coaster, my first time piecing, and choosing my fabrics for this kind of design and the first time i made my own bias tape. i also learned how important it is to choose the correct needle for your machine based on what you are making (don't forget to always change your needle when starting a new project) and to use the triple stitch on my sewing machine. phew, that was a lot. it was fun to make and the pattern was easy to follow.

these two lovelies are going to my grandmas for christmas. i hope they love them as much as the love i put into making them :) they are very special ladies whom i will miss being with over the holidays. they both love tea and both sew, so hopefully they will enjoy using a spiffy new cozy! have any of you made this pattern before? have you made your own tea pot cozy? find some more tea inspiring posts here in our tea cup month!

what were you up to last week? did you get a dent made in your xmas to do and make list? come say hi and let's catch up :)

winner of the bobaloo giveaway!

a big congrats to:

mommypants13 said... 47 I follow your blog

(mommypants - samantha from bobaloo will be in touch with you soon!)

thanks for all of your entries everyone! i hope you all fell in luv with bobaloo just like i did! happy xmas shopping :)

how's your week going so far? mine has been a lot crazier than anticipated and the amount of sewing/knitting getting done is not nearly as high as i would like it to be. here's hoping the rest of the week progresses a heckuva lot better :) missing you all. i'll be back this week with some pictures :)

mommyhood moments - out of office reply

christmas is coming - yikes! i just looked at my calendar and just about fainted! i have some serious sewing and knitting to do to get my gifts all done to ship for december 1st. you all know how it goes right? i also have a to do list that is seriously the longest it's ever been, it is now playing a prominent role in my dreams at night - yes, i am dreaming about my to do list. things like getting christmas cards ordered in time for them to arrive to get them mailed out, as well as editing/ordering the gazillion pics i need developed of the kiddos for said cards. i am also working on a big surprise for the site and 3 new tutorials...ohhh, you excited? well the list goes on...but i won't bore you with all of it because i'm sure it is almost the same as all of yours. overwhelming, anxiety causing, heartbeat racing, sweat inducing, fear filled to do lists - eeekkk!

oh, and yes, i know i don't really have an office, but i will be away from the "mommyhood" for a few days. please feel free to hang out here though, and converse, get inspired, leave a comment and just have some fun! i will be officially back next monday but may be popping in here and there as my pressies get finished cause you all know what's the fun in making them if you can't share right??

wish me luck, i'm gonna need it :) i'm hoping that:

a) i don't ruin any of my projects
b) my sewing machine lives through the next 2 weeks, it's been feeling a bit down lately
c) my children don't get sick again and actually allow me to craft
d) i wake up tomorrow and it is now decided that there will be 36 hours in a day instead of 24
e) my hubby forgives me for neglecting the house, chores and his laundry in exchange for material, wool, knitting needles, paper, scrap fabric & thread all over the place. don't worry honey, i'll make sure i leave a space on the bed for you to sleep on..haha.
f) my toddler actually sleeps through the night without waking up 5 times.
- geez, that was way too easy to write, i think i could do the whole alphabet!

and now i'll leave you with what's been making me cry every time i hear it, seriously, i bawl like a friggin baby. whether it's my hormones, lack of sleep, the fact that harper turned 6 months on the weekend & ate her first food, or just plain soft heart, this song from the new taylor swift album (which i cannot stop listening to because i LOVE it soooo much) is just oh gosh, just making me a pile of mush. so to all you mommas out there this one's for you - get out your kleenx. have a wonderful week, see you soon!

are you feeling overwhelmed by your to do list? what do you do to conquer it? are you making your xmas pressies this year? i made a promise to myself that would make as many xmas gifts as i could this year, anyone else doing the same?

weekend wishes- better late than never

to get outside & enjoy this gorgeous fall weather before it's gone....

to get started on whipping up some xmas pressies...

to get through some of the books i've been hoarding by my bed...

to help my toddler to get through this phase of night terrors....

to add some more knit decor to my home...

to eat some of these...with some coffee of course...

to hunt down some vintage lace...

to find the time to make a new cozy afghan...

and to have you all comment below which brand of sewing machines is your fave.

yipee, i made it. wasn't sure weekend wishes was gonna happen today, but harper finally napped - poor little thing with her faucet nose. this weekend i would love for my toddler to sleep one night without waking up with a bad dream or night terrors (any tips for night terrors?) and for both of them to be healthy and coldless (word?). i'm hoping to get some sewing/knitting projects checked off my list, get some work done on the instruction booklet for the "infinity & beyond scarf" tutorial, read, get some exercise (ha!), & find a dress for an upcoming xmas party that actually hides my post baby belly and still fits over my girls (aka boobs). what about you guys? what are you up to?

off topic, i've been having some conversations on twitter (follow me @inthemommyhood) about which brand of sewing machine is your fave to use. there have been some wonderful suggestions & tips but i thought i would put it out there for you all to chat as well. i'm sure i'm not the only one dreaming of santa replacing my 11 year old machine (buffy, i hope santa brings you one). i get overwhelmed just thinking of starting to narrow down my choices so i'm researching the brains out of it before i go in the store. we also talked which brand of sewing machine we don't like hoping to narrow down brands that way as well.

so chat away ladies...let's talk sewing machines and maybe some sleep tips for me on night terrors (pretty please?). hope you all have a wonderful, crafty, fun-filled weekend & don't forget to get your entry in for the "bobaloo giveaway" - fab prize! see ya on monday!

*ps - to those of you new to the blog, i try to respond to your comments in the comments section. i enjoy others being able to see the conversation and join in. please don't think i'm ignoring you if you don't get an email from lil'ol me. while i do sometimes email readers most of the time i address questions back in the same comment section. feel free to chat amongst each other as well :)

weekend wishes soon....

i've got two little ones with colds and one is teething & the other has been having night terrors. computer time has been tricky to get today, so weekend wishes is coming, just a little bit later this morning :)

lest we forget...

it's remembrance day in canada today, a public holiday (or veteran's day to those of you in the US) so no regular post for me. i'm going to spend it with family and of course, in remembrance.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
to those who have fallen or who have lost.

moments in the mommyhood - whatcha been up to?

october has seemed to fly by. the blog was filled with lots of crafty goodness which didn't leave room for a lot of updates as to how we are doing with our new family of four. our baby girl harper is almost 6 months old already, oh how it hurts my heart. instead of weeping on here though about how big she is already and how i cleaned out a huge garbage bag filled of clothes that she's grown out of and the fact that she is trying to crawl but would rather stand & walk, laughs, says dada and is just plain growing the way babies do, i'll just let you ogle some pics of my gorgeous girl.

she's quite the happy baby (knock on wood) until she can't get what she wants. i fear this is gonna come to haunt me later but for now we're all good. i have some serious sleep training to do that i've been putting off. she's a great sleeper and sleeps through the night but she likes to fall asleep on the boob. she falls asleep for her naps no problem without boob when we are out, but at home, forget it. she wants her mama. i'm thinking it's time to nick that in the bud before i go down the same path i did with her sister.

speaking of her sister, mackenzie started preschool and is loving it. she's quite the big girl now and busy, busy, busy. i can't keep up with this kid. she wears me out. i swear that sometimes harper and i just sit and stare at her as she bounces off the walls...haha. oh well, she keeps us entertained.

we've been enjoying fall around victoria. the leaves everywhere make for a gorgeous season in our pretty city. i especially love the feeling of wanting to just cozy up with my 2 girls and snuggle with a good movie (loved toy story 3), a cup of hot chocolate, my knitting and the fireplace on. we even closed the blinds today during a windstorm and just kept it all snug as a bug in a rug inside.

on the sewing front here's what i recently made.

she's my new best friend. i had been meaning to make one since "tea cup month" on the site here, but time just didn't allow. i finally got to it though after a friend of mine inspired me when i saw her knitted version (thanks amy!). i used the "house on hill road" tutorial and it was very easy to follow and super fun to make. let's just say there are a ton of these being made for xmas pressies this year! i also noticed that about a week after i made mine starbucks is now selling there own "knockoff handmade" cup cozies. they had some with snaps and some with buttons. honestly though, as much as i love their coffee, i wouldn't buy a cozy from them. support your local artisans or etsy shops. handmade with love is much nicer than from a factory overseas :)

and now, i'd like to introduce you to my new baby............you ready?....you sure?.....she's awfully pretty......ok...here she is, right smack dab in the middle!

yep, can you believe it! i found another of the pyrex dishes in the turquoise! doesn't she look pretty with my other girls - blue sue (the bottom) and fate kate (the top). if you are new to the blog i name my pyrex, i know it's weird, but hey, we all have our quirks! she was rescued from a local thrift shop for the steal price of $6! i couldn't believe it. she's in great condition and even had the lid!!! let me tell you - i skipped out of that store whistling a merry tune!

i've also had my eye out for some fun secondhand bookends and fell in love with these wood carved ones from a new fave consignment shop in town. it had oodles of lovely things just begging to be taken home and these won out. i got a pair, real wood for $5! you like? they are up on the shelf in the new "sewing wall" revamp...don't worry, pics and posts to come soon!

what have you all been up to? how are your kiddos? i know there are a few of you who just had babies and/or are due any day now! any thrifting/vintage finds you guys have scooped on lately? leave me a comment, let's chat, share your pics & your thoughts!

sponsor love - shoeology

most women love shoes. we can never seem to have enough pairs. we always want more. but this time, instead of hitting the stores for new shoes or slippers, why not use those crafty talents of yours and whip up a pair custom made for your feet from a pattern from shoeology? pick the fabric you want, in the perfect color for that new fave outfit or refashion a jacket or pants into some must have comfy shoes!

what about those new skinny jeans that you've been hunting for a new pair of flats to wear with? pick up some faux leather or light weight leather from your local craft shop or online and put a soft sole on some stylish patterns from the new etsy shop "shoeology" and get walking. perfect for dry days, where you want to curl up at your favorite coffee shop with a great friend for some girl chat.

does it sound a bit daunting to add a leather sole? well, because i'm a newbie sewer i asked cheri about this and she gave us a great tip. make sure to use a leather sewing needle when sewing the sole on and also that 2.5oz or less would make a great lightweight leather.

cheri's got 3 new patterns in the shop to suit any style. mary jane's, vintage upcycled, & sunday morning slippers. those sunday morning slippers would be the perfect addition to any weekend lounging or even perfect for pre or post yoga. so comfy! you know when you go shopping and you find something you love and it's a great deal? well that's what's shoeology got. i don't know about you but when i find a top that fits great that's easy to wear i take my mom's advice and scoop up a few colors (if budget allows of course) cause i know i'm gonna wear the heck out of it. right now at shoeology you can get all 3 of these fun patterns for only $15! pretty good deal if you ask me.

want to know a little bit more? let's hear from cheri...

3)Rose tutorial is included.

slight delay

a normal post will be up later today. i got a major toothache yesterday afternoon that bothered me all night. that combined with another growth spurt on the toddler's part (this means tantrums, grumpiness, no sleep, weird eating habits, pickyness...and the list goes on) has made the last few days a bit trying. so i took a break and went to bed somewhat early (if you count 10:30pm early). cross your fingers that my little cracked filling doesn't need a root canal....and get ready for some crochet!
