makin'it in the mommyhood - baby shower goodness part two

so you guys got a peek at the crafty baby shower i helped plan on the weekend on monday's post now here's the part where i show you what i made! yippee! rebecca and i wanted to give our guests a little gift to take home as a thank you for coming. my pal amy loves her tea and coffee and i came up with the idea to give everyone a few bags of one of her fave flavours of tea - peach! yummy! i knew i wanted to come up with a cute and crafty way to give them the tea so i thought why not sew up a pretty tea envelope to put the tea in?! fun right?

well let me tell you these little guys are very addicting!!! i had to stop myself from making like a hundred of them and adorning them with lace and trim and ric rac...ohhh, so many possibilities! i decided to keep them nice and simple and use my crafting scissors to make a pretty scallop edge for the flap and label. i used twine for the string and used my scissors again to make the scallop on the edge of each tag. the back of each tag and a hand printed thank you on them. i printed out the labels on the computer to use as a seal to close the envelope. i fit 3 large tea bags into each envelope and used the sewing machine to sew it all together! i love them! aren't they cute?

if anyone's interested i'd be more than happy to do up a tiny tutorial with a template that you can print out. it's pretty simple though so i wasn't sure any of you would even need it :) i'd love to hear your thoughts on it though.

i also wanted to give each guest a card i but didn't want it to be a card they just went home and recycled. i wanted it to be a card that they could give and pass on to someone else. i heart the idea of sewing on paper and try to make cards whenever i can this way. i had spotted some cards online that used ruffles and decided to have a go at making some. i used some natural art paper (not sure what it is...watercolor maybe?) that had been gifted to me and then used an old gift card as a template for sizing. i then cut out the fabric strips, ruffled them on the machine and then stitched them on the card using the sewing machine as well. easy peasy.

i think they look natural and oh, so pretty. again, these are addicting so be warned....there are also lots of options to customize these for your own taste as well. we used the tea envelopes and the blank cards for the table settings along with ribbon tied napkins to set the table for our guests.

now on to the gifts for the birthday boy! i decided that it was the perfect time to make dana's knee pad pants! i used a pair of harper's jeans as a template for the pattern and then whipped him up the cutest pair of pants using an old pair of my maternity jeans! nice and stretchy!!! i then repurposed a soft shirt of the hubs to make the knee pads with. adorable! the pics don't do the jeans justice. i squealed when i tried them on harper but my monkey wouldn't stay still long enough to get a decent shot.

i also had been dying to try my hand at making one of those super cute stuffed owls that have been floating around for ages. i couldn't find the exact one i wanted so i combined a few pics i saw of owl stuffies and winged it. i again repurposed my maternity jeans and jer's shirt for the owl. the jeans made up the body on the front and the hub's shirt makes a soft, snuggly back. the side fabric is from the "it's a hoot" line from moda and was scraps from harper's quilt. the polka dot was from my stash of scraps as well. gotta love scraps!

so what do you think??? you likey?? i'm so excited to finally show you all what i have been up to! it's been so fun. share your thoughts :) what have you been making? come add your pics to our flickr group!

so let's do that....let's get to know jenny together and welcome her to the mommyhood. grab a yummy coffee/tea, curl up in your fave spot, put the kidlets down for a nap, take a breather and let's chat!

1. Ok, Jenny I have to ask this first...what is your favorite item to repurpose/refashion?

I’ll use anything that will let me transform it into something I like! Jeans, corduroys, sheets, curtains, sweatshirts, and sweaters are always great basics to start up a new project. But more unusual items can be inspiring too. Items like bed comforters, vinyl tablecloths, rugs, belts, and men’s suit coats are plentiful at the thrift store… but what to do with them? Hmm. It gets me thinking. I love the challenge.

2. What is one project you've always wanted to make but haven't had the chance yet?

For months now, I’ve had an idea for a copycat LuvSac made out of thrifted comforters. But those “sacs” are huge; I guess I’m feeling intimidated by the size. Plus, I haven’t figured out how to inexpensively stuff it. I’m hoping an idea will come to me soon… if I wait long enough, an idea usually surfaces.

3. How on earth did you balance writing two books while being a busy mom to Jack (6) and Charlie (2) and a wife to your husband, Brett?

I don’t know. :)

Honestly, I think most moms struggle with balance. You adore your family and you want to give them your attention and care and love. And at the same time, you want those things for yourself. Writing a book is a monumental commitment, time-wise. And deadlines loom heavy. It took me about eight months to put ReSew together, from first to last page. What worked for me was budgeting my time, keeping my family in the know, and asking (and letting) other family members help. My sister and my mother-in-law took my boys a couple of times a week for a few hours at a time during that period so I could work on the book. Mommy guilt played its part, but it turned out to be a win-win for everyone—my boys got to spend more time with their Aunt Nini and grandma, and I got to FOCUS. When my boys came home I felt like I had accomplished something, so I could turn my focus back to them. The pace was still hectic, but my entire family—including my boys’ “go-get-‘em, mom!” attitude, made it work.

And then there’s my husband. Ever heard of a rock? That’s him. A really cute rock.

4. What tips do you have for others looking to find items at secondhand stores?

I’ve got a whole list of tips for thrifting in ReSew, but here’s my favorite, and it’s twofold. When you think about something you want or need—whether it’s a skirt to refashion, or a crock pot, or a bookcase, or whatever—write it down on a thrifting list. I keep mine on the side of my fridge. Bring the list along on your thrift store stops. (I thrift at least weekly—there’s a high turnaround for items, and there’s usually only one of anything you see.) I once had a water-bath canning pot on my list. It spent nine months on the list, but I finally got one in great condition for $8. Victory!

The second part of the process? When you’re done looking for the things on your list, ditch it. Go walk the aisles and just see what you see. You never, never know what you might find. A few weeks ago I was at the thrift store with my two-year old, looking through rounders of sweaters. I spotted something strange under a rack of dresses and bent down to take a look. It was an adult-size Stormtrooper helmet. Clean, sturdy, buttons still working (“I think we’ve run into some trouble, sir!”). For $3, it’s been entertaining my two boys—and my husband—ever since.

In conclusion: Use the list faithfully. Ditch the list faithfully. At the thrift store, it is imperative that you be responsible and spontaneous at the same time.

And finally, if you’re a mom, don’t fear—bring your kids along! I tell my boys if they stay close to me and follow my rules for being at the store, we’ll spend 10 minutes in the toy aisle when I’m done looking. Sometimes we leave with a small toy for each; sometimes we find one jackpot item to take home (latest example—a real-wood, kid-size acoustic guitar); and sometimes we leave with nothing. I want Jack and Charlie to understand that just because you walk into a store doesn’t mean you have to buy. That’s imperative to remember at the thrift store: sometimes you go, and then come back home with only the experience. And with some of the hilariously weird, wacky, and unbelievably strange things I’ve seen while thrifting, the experience alone can be its own reward!

5. We all have our fave thrifting haunts and I want to know where your favorite places are to find items to repurpose?

I’m lucky enough to live in an area where thrifting is big. The central offices of a church are located here in Utah—it’s kind of what our state is known for—and they run a chain of thrift stores where the items are wonderfully organized and reasonably priced. There are four or five stores within a 20-mile radius of my home, so I frequent those a lot. I also love Savers/Value Village, which is a chain in the U.S. and Canada, and I also love ThriftTown, which is national. But don’t forget those independent thrift shops that dot the retail landscape! You can search for independent stores in Canada and the U.S. here.

6. Where do you sew in your home and are you a late night, morning or all day sewer?

I am lucky to have a room in the basement of our home where I sew. It is always a holy mess. But I have a little basket of basic supplies that I can take upstairs to the kitchen table if I want or need to sew there. That’s where I typically sew if I’m watching over my little ones at the same time. It’s nice to be mobile quickly! As far as when I sew, I’ll take time whenever I can get it. I’m not an all-day sewing kind of person; I like to create in little bits, and then walk away from a project. It gives me time to think about construction, or design, or finishing details while I’m busy with the mundane tasks of laundry folding, dish drying, and the like.

One half of the holy mess. (I just can’t bear to take a photo of the other half.)

7. I love to crank the tunes while I'm sewing - do you like to listen to music while sewing and if so what are your top 3 songs?

Oh YES YES YES. I love music. It helps boost my creativity and gets me excited about making stuff, no doubt about it! I couldn’t begin to narrow my favorites down to three songs, but I can mention three favorite artists that I’m listening to now: the soulful, make me dance and cry Erykah Badu; the band coined as “The Most Rock ‘n Roll Rock ‘n Roll Band in the World,” The Black Crowes; and pre-1980’s Elton John. A weird mix, but good go-tos for my many, many moods.

8. When did you know you wanted to write a book & how did you take the steps to make it happen?

My first book—which is actually a box—is called The Little Box of Baby Quilts, and it was inspired by the birth of my first son, Jack. At the time, I had so many ideas for baby quilts that I started sketching them out so I wouldn’t forget them. It was my husband who encouraged me to submit my ideas for possible publication with the world’s largest quilt-book publisher, Martingale & Company. I had also worked for them as a copywriter, but I had left the company to stay at home with Jack. I put together my hand-drawn illustrations of baby quilts along with samples of fabrics, quilt blocks, and quilts, and I sent them off to the publisher. And then I waited. And waited. And then, I got the word—the project was a go! I was elated. (And quite terrified, as I recall.)

Martingale gave me nine months to design, sew, and write directions for all 20 quilts in the “little box.” Jack was instrumental in the process, helping me choose fabrics and giving his opinions of quilts I had made in his own little two-year-old way. I remember when I finished one of the quilts, called “Inch by Inch,” I spread it out on the floor to show Jack. He lay down on the quilt, scooted up to a caterpillar face, and gave it a big kiss. What a stamp of approval for a baby quilt!

I was approached by the same publisher to write my second book, ReSew. The fantastically cool managing editor there, Tina Cook, had been following my blog and liked the refashioned projects I had shared there. It took me about three seconds to decide to repeat the book-making process all over again. It is an exciting, exhausting, maddening, scary, crazy, and rewarding experience. If given the chance, I would do it yet again, after a little more time to recover from ReSew. I still haven’t completely cleaned up from that yet.

9. Can we see what the first quilt you ever made looks like? Do you have good or bad memories on the process?

Oh, all good memories! The first quilt I made was from a book called Celebrating the Quilt. It was a tiny wall quilt from the design team known as Little Quilts. I didn’t have a sewing machine, so I hand pieced and hand appliquéd the whole thing. The colors clashed, the stitches were wonky, and the construction was shaky at best. I loved every minute of putting that little quilt together. That was back in 1997. I’ve been quilting ever since. Although I’m happy to say I got smart to the wonders of sewing machines.

10. Is there any craft you just don't like?

I’ve never tried a craft I haven’t enjoyed, but I have tried a craft that I just can’t seem to do right. Crocheting. I knit fairly well but crocheting and me really struggle together! A few people have tried to teach me, and it just doesn’t stick. The last time I tried I was shooting for a square shape, and instead I ended up with a half moon! How does that even happen? I won’t give up, though. I want to try amigurumi someday.

11. I think most of us have all at least had one dreaded failed project. Do you have a failed project? What do you do when a project just isn't working?

I’ve had dozens of failed projects. Dozens! To me, that’s just part of the creative process. I think to come up with something unique, you have to be able to experiment—and sometimes, that means screwing things up. You just have to know when to throw in the towel, walk away, and start fresh another time.

I do try and salvage what I can from failed projects, though. Last year I tried to make a funky monster stuffie from two thrifted sweaters. This was the result:

To me? A failure. But when I sewed button eyes onto the little guy and sat his sad little body on the couch in defeat, my two-year old, Charlie, picked him up, gave him a hug, and said, “I yike dis monster!” So, even failures can be fun!

12. What do you find the most rewarding about refashioning and repurposing?

Well, I love the obvious—saving money, playing a part in helping the strain on the environment, and going on the treasure hunt. But my favorite thing about repurposing is simply seeing the beauty in the broken. Spotting something that someone has tossed aside and thinking, that has life in it yet. Taking it home, and taking the time to make it into something that’s cool and unique and fun.

13. What is your funniest/most embarrassing crafting moment?

My sister and I were making a wedding quilt for my brother and his soon-to-be wife. It was our first try at paper piecing. If you’ve tried it, you know that it’s kind of a backwards way of sewing. It was tricky, but we were getting the hang of it and feeling proud of ourselves. We were at my kitchen table, cutting and sewing away. Suddenly, I accidentally dropped my rotary cutter. It carved into my leg on the way to the floor, creating a three-inch long cut. Ouch. I quickly attended to the wound and sat back at the sewing machine. The wedding wasn’t far away—we were on a deadline! Then, not two minutes later, my sister literally sliced the tip of her finger off with her rotary cutter. OUCH. After that, we decided to take a very much needed break.

My brother and his wife have been married now for 10 years, and have two beautiful daughters. Despite our gory fiasco, it was certainly not a sign of bad luck!

14. Spill the beans...what kind of sewing machine/serger do you use?

I have an old Kenmore that I use as my main machine. I also have a Pfaff that I picked up at a school rummage sale, but I haven’t sat down to learn how to use it yet (need to do that!). Two years ago, my husband bought me a Singer serger. After my neighbor taught me how to thread it properly one year later (yes, the machine sat in its box for a year), I really started enjoying it.

15. Do you have a sewing tip that you can't live without that you'd be willing to share?

I used to work with a wonderfully loud and gregarious woman named Rhoda Reynolds. She worked in sales, which was perfect for her—she could turn a “no” into a “yes!” with the wave of her hand. One day I was complaining to her about a half-made quilt that had been on my sewing table for months. I just couldn’t decide how to finish it. She said, “Just get it done.”

OH, I thought. Yeah.

I went home and finished that quilt over the weekend. I got it done. Rhoda’s simple answer has been one of the best pieces of advice about sewing that I’ve ever received. What you make doesn’t have to be perfect, or flawless, or immaculate. It doesn’t have to be something that you have to agonize over. In fact, I feel like what we make with our own hands should be somewhat imperfect—that is, in part, what makes what we create unique. What we create isn’t made by machines, isn’t made by the thousands, isn’t made to be put on display with 20 other items that look exactly the same. It’s one thing. It’s one special, thoughtful, soulful thing, from me to you. (Or from me to me, if you are treating yourself!) We may give what we’ve made to someone and say, “Oh, it’s just a little something I made.” But secretly, we know the truth. It’s handcrafted and heartfelt, imperfections and all. It was a one-of-a-kind experience to make it. And now, it’s done.

Sadly, my friend Rhoda passed away a few years ago from cancer. I miss her thunderous laugh, and her practical, no-nonsense approach to life. Thanks for the advice, Rhoda.

16. Time for the question I'm dying to hear the answer to. Being someone whose dream is to have her own book one day what advice do you have for those who would one day like to write their own sewing book?

TRY.

If you have ideas, write them down. Sketch them out. Do whatever you need to so you can remember each idea you have. Then watch for an overarching theme. When you find it, build on it. Make that the topic of your book. Develop a vision for it. Pattern publishers want one wonderful project; book publishers want a cohesive collection.

by jenny wilding cardon

Don’t be afraid to contact publishers about how to submit a proposal; in fact, I suggest contacting them before you even get started. Different publishers will have different guidelines for you to follow; their guidelines are in place to help you hone your ideas. Many publishers even have information about proposals online. There’s no need to be timid about reaching out to get the information you need to get started; it will demystify the process and help you take the steps you need to take to make your dream a reality. If you’ve got a great idea for a sewing book, publishers want to hear from you. Be brave, believe in yourself, and take that first step! Who knows? In the future you could be up in the middle of the night, trying to keep your eyes open as you write the final step-by-step instructions for your last project so you can honor the deadline for your manuscript. Ah, sweet, sweet memories.

Shannon, thank you so very much for the opportunity to share a little bit of my life and my book with your readers. well today's weekend wishes almost didn't make it but one of my wishes was to get this post up. they are therapeutic to me and even when life gets really stressful, really busy, really exhausting weekend wishes always seems to cheer me up and give me that extra nudge to make it through the day. i love that you all enjoy this post as well and it's my fave one to do out of the week.

we're pretty sleep deprived in our house right now thus the almost lack of this post. my brain isn't functioning..haha. i fell asleep sitting up staring at my laptop last night. hilarious. i realized it was time to turn it off, regroup and post in the morning because all you were going to get from me was goobily goop, spelling errors and lots of senseless rambling...well there may be a bit of that too today but you all forgive me right?

this weekend is the baby shower a friend and i are planning. i'm so excited! i can't wait to show you all the crafty goodness me and rebecca have been up to! it's been so fun to taunt and torture our friend amy about all the little things we have planned :) i'll be posting next week with some pics and even a little tutorial if you are all interested.

we are into full overtime/tax season swing around here. the hubby has been working every night this week (thus my exhaustion) and will be working both days this weekend as well. so coffee is my friend even more than it's ever been. i think the hubs and i could sleep for a few months straight at this point. i've got lots of sewing, crafting and goodies planned for this weekend and i'm hoping i get at least one thing crossed off my list. we've also got swimming lessons and lots of cuddling when daddy is home to be done.

what are you all up to this weekend? wanna have some tea and chat? any of you sleep deprived this week & flying solos sans hubby? any big crafting plans? wishing you a sleep filled, cozy, warm, snuggly weekend! hugs!

doily crafts & diy roundup

ohhhhhh, i'm so excited about this roundup you guys! doilies have been on my mind a lot lately. maybe it's because the universe seems to be hiding them from me at all my local thrift haunts and because i'm just too darn lazy & busy to make my own but i just keep seeing project after project with these lovely pieces of granny chicness! it's been driving me a bit batty. so instead of sitting here wallowing in my doily self pity i decided to put together a lovely roundup filled with my FAVE doily crafts & diy's that i've spotted floating around the blogoshpere. there are so many options when it comes to creating with doilies these are just a sampling of the ones i'm inspired by and i didn't even dive into the paper doily crafts. there's enough of those to make a whole other post.

so go find some doilies, raid your granny's linen closet, your local thrift shop, make some, doesn't matter where you find them just get some and get creating! cover your furniture, your home decor, your clothes, your soaps.....heck even rocks! just use those lacy pieces of goodness. i promise it'll brighten up your day and add a smile to your face!

moments in the mommyhood - cookies and doilies

mmmmmmmm, cookies.  well, these aren't the cookie lids for coffee mugs as seen on friday's weekend wishes - i didn't get the courage to try those.  but if any of you would like to try that recipe out martina from the blog trattoria da martina wrote to me and mentioned that anyone looking for the recipe in english to email her (her email addy is on the sidebar) and she would help out. also one of our readers used google translate to swap over to english as well. if any of you make that delicious looking cookie lid please let me know - i'd love to hear how it turned out.

instead of the lids i made a simply delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe from one of my fave readers/friends laura of the blog "on the laundry line". it's dangerous and i've made this recipe twice now and both times the cookies lasted no longer than 2 days!!! craziness! they are truly addicting.  i don't even like to bake so you know these are good when i've made 2 batches in 2 weeks. i had to keep chanting to myself " a moment on the lips is a lifetime on the hips" and other such nonesense so that i didn't just sit down and devour that entire chewy, moisty, delicious batch.  good thing we had company for the weekend to help me eat them or i think i truly would have died at sunday's total body conditioning class.  i also only had mini chips on hand on the weekend so i thought it was the perfect excuse to just add more of them..haha. if any of you would like the recipe let me know and i'll see if laura is willing to share her cookie goodness on here or on her blog for you all.

*edited* - here's the cookie recipe folks! the lovely, hilarious and super sweet pal of mine laura took it upon herself to make some more cookies (oh the burden..hahaha) and posted a lovely post today just for you guys on how to make some of these addictive cookies for you to eat right along side us!  we dont' wanna be the only ones gorging on chocolate....hey...don't judge...nothing beats a fresh out of the oven cookie and a mug of coffee when you are having one of those "mom days"....right?  go here to check out the recipe for the "worthit chocolate chip cookies".

i also got my doily stitched onto my $3 ikea pillow. don't you just love it?  i'm so in love with how it turned out.  it was so easy and quick to do and added just that right touch of granny chic to my boring little pillow. now all i need to do is find another one for the matching pillow or i may just have to come up with something else.  this was so easy and it's killing me to not make all the other doily projects i have in my project folder.  i'm still sending the vibes out to those darn thrift shops....doilies...doilies...come to me....

have any of you added doilies to your home decor? sewn with them? appliqued them? diy'd them?  i wanna see!!!!  also what's your fave chocolate chip cookie recipe?  did you have a good weekend? let's catch up :)

p.s. i'm looking for the instructions to that doily light from friday as well. i can't seem to find the actual tutorial.  it's in the works though folks...i'll find it....hopefully.

oscar recovery day

oops, no post today. forgot to tell you all on friday that i'm taking today off. we had friends from out of town visiting on the weekend and let's face it...with good company, yummy food and the oscars it left me little time for blogging. hope you had a great weekend and have a happy monday!

weekend wishes

to get caught up on my knitting...

to feel the WARM sun on my face after all this cold snow...

to share with you soon why i've been digging owls...

to one day have a yarn stash that looks like this...

to find some more doilies and make one of these...i'm so in love with it...

to have a nap here...

to hang some of these lovelies up in my sewing area...

to figure out how the heck to make one of these and eat it...

and to make you smile cause it feels like it's been a long week.

did ya smile? yeah? good :) cheesy, i know, but cute regardless. it's been a long week for me. feels like one of those weeks that just drags on and on. oh well...the weekend can only get better right? we've got some of our best friends coming from out of town to visit this weekend and we are super excited to see them so most of my time will be spent hanging and catching up with them. i've got a few projects that i have to finish up for a baby shower a friend and i are throwing. i can't wait to show you all the pics but it's going to have to wait because the new mom is a friend of mine who reads the blog and i wouldn't want to give away any of the surprises....right amy?

i've been finding myself fixated on finding doilies at the moment. for some strange reason though i can never seem to find any good ones at my local thrift shops and when i do it's at value village and they are charging way too much for what they are. i have so many projects i want to make right now with doilies.....so i'm sending it out there doilies, wherever you are hiding in some dusty salvation army - peek your head out and say hello ok? i'll give you a nice new home! my fave one that i've been holding onto on my inspiration board is now being stitched onto one of my throw pillows (pics to come soon). now i need to find another one for the other pillow. do you guys heart doilies too?

i think this weekend will be the first time i really am going to miss cable. the oscars are on right? it's going to be weird not sitting in front of the tv ooohing and ahhing over the oscars. i love oscar night. you'll watch for me right?

what are you up to this weekend? any items you're hoping to find thrifting that have been evading you? have any exciting oscar plans? have a wonderful, relaxing, sunshine filled & yummy cookie eating weekend!

action pack: a mini-mag for kids who want to do stuff

i was so excited to find out that kathreen of "whipup" is launching march 1st a fab new mini-mag called "action pack: a mini-mag for kids who want to do stuff".  geared to kids aged 7 and up this is the perfect thing to get the tween crowd making, playing and creating!  after all, not all of us have kidlets that are wee ones.

kathreen developed action pack with "busy parents and creative energetic kids in mind".  it's an easy printable pdf, costs only $5 (wow!), there's no ads and it's filled to the brim with "20 pages of craft projects, outdoor activities, cooking, drawing & more, everything a kid needs for a weekend (or two) of activities".  all the projects inside are kid tested and approved :)

projects like beeswax candles, lip balm & hand lotion (with your own labels!), beeswax dipped origami boats (they float), honey cinnamon cake, drawing lessons, fun facts & more!  ummmmm, i wanna be a kid so i can do the projects in action pack. hello....these are fabulous!  such a great idea!

most of my readers know i'm a big believer in encouraging handmade in my home so to see this kind of publication come out to encourage not only our wee ones, but also our tweens, teens and everything else in between to create and use their imaginations does my heart good.  you can download and purchase your copy of action pack here for only $5 buckaroos.  skip the latte....you won't regret it.

you can also find lots of other crafty inspiration and goodness over at kathreen's blog - whipup.  you are sure to find more than enough projects to keep you busy and your kids.

so get inspired, find a project and get creating!  your imagination awaits!  what is your favorite kind of craft, experiment or project to do with your kids?  would your child love action pack?

room with a new view

do you ever get sick of staring at the same view day after day while breastfeeding?  we sit day after day, hour after hour breastfeeding and looking at the same darn view.  i know, i could change rooms, but i like to nest and i have my fave spot on the couch, my fave end so to speak and i nest there.  i've got my drinks (water, coffee), my remotes, snack, nail clippers (for the baby), my laptop & table it's on(piled high with dayplanners and sketchbooks/ring binders), my knitting and of course - the "view".

i have a basic circle mirror from ikea hanging above my mantle that was just missing some va va voom.  i didn't know what the heck to do with it, but it's been driving me batty.  i was going to take it down but for some reason just couldn't bring myself to do it.

remember this wreath?  well it was the size of a grocery story pizza box.  just right for a holiday decoration but it just didn't seem to have enough oomph once all the decorations were down.  it looked too lonesome where i had it.  again, i found myself torn...wanting to keep it up but unable to find the right home for it.  then inspiration hit me.  why not do the same thing on the mirror?

so i took the leaves off the cardboard and simply attached them to the mirror instead.  ohhh, sticky tape i do love you.  i had to cut out more leaves but it was just a fun project to do with mackenzie.  we cut and stuck our pretty white paper leaves to our boring mirror and shazam a new view.  gotta love that.  now while breastfeeding i feel inspired just that little bit more to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new.  even repurposed items can be repurposed.  i  so love that.

Say cheese!
so get inspired ladies.  don't settle for the same ol' boring view.  mix it up.  move something around, turn something into something else.  just make "your nest" a happy place.  where do you "nest"?  what's your fave view while breastfeeding?  take a pic, leave a comment - let's chat!

the post was late...late for a very important date...

well today's post was supposed to be a fantabulous giveaway from one of the sweetest author/bloggers i know - jenny wilding cardon from the new book resew: turn thrift store finds into fabulous designs. we've got a great interview filled with tips, pics and refashioning goodness. jenny is also our newest moms in the mommyhood (back by popular demand)! we decided that while we did the interview i would also do a book review and a giveaway for all of you. but whatdoya know...as per usual any snail mail coming from the states to good ol' canada (we really aren't that far away) takes FOREVER! i mean forever. my fabric takes forever, my orders for lovely goodies take forever....why, oh why postperson do you torture us so? and you wonder why we end up using ups or purolater???

so all you wonderful readers stay tuned.....jenny's post will be up soon and it's lots of fun so you don't want to miss it! plus you guys are not gonna wanna miss a chance to win a copy of her book! here's a little video clip to tide you over. ohhhh....ahhhhhhh...doesn't it make you just want to take your thrifting to a whole new level?

you can read more about jenny and her adorable family on her blog the wildcards, follow along with the rest of jenny's blog tour (i'm so excited to be among these fab blogs) and if you can't wait to win a copy of resew pick up your own now right here.

what's your favorite item to refashion? what do you love the most about thrifting? are you excited that "moms in the mommyhood" is back?

moments in the mommyhood - a swinging good time

the weekend that i thought may not be a good one turned out to be pretty alright. the scattering of one very, very, very large tantrum threatened to damper our day but we made it through unscathed and enjoyed the rest of our days off. i'm sure you can all relate to the dreaded tantrum who looms around every corner just waiting to eat happy little kids for a yummy snack....i don't like that mr. tantrum.

we hit up a local rummage sale with some friends and then had a nice walk in the sunshine with the hubs and yes, enjoyed a half price starbucks - i'm sad it's over but i milked it while it was around. we couldn't resist sticking little harper in the swing for her first swing ride. yep, i know she's 9 months and she's never been in the swing....what can i say, i avoid the park like the plague unless i have to be there. harper had a big weekend because she also took her first steps!!!! oh my baby isn't such a baby anymore. pretty soon she's gonna be running everywhere and my days of sewing while become even more few and far between..hahaha.

sunday we were lucky to get sun again...i'm hoping this means spring is around the corner. we enjoyed some more park time and swim lessons followed by a yummy roast in the slow cooker (thanks for all the tips/recipes from the facebook crowd). now, if only i had been able to sleep through the night...or even slept for 4 hours without being woken up by one kid or another....then...welll...no...i can't even think about it. forget the food, the thought of sleep is enough to cause a substantial amount of drool in my mouth and a recurring longing in our house. a longing for sleep that probably won't come to realization until my kids are 18 and even then i sometimes wonder if it will :)

how was your weekend? what did you get up to? do you avoid mr. tantrum like the plague too?

weekend wishes

to find out how the heck to get my hands on these overly cheerful, yet adorable mugs..you know i need these right?....

to finally get brave enough to go into the gap and try on these fab skinny jeans i have been coveting for about 6 months now...

that the sun shines so bright that we gotta wear shades dude...

to finally crochet myself some fresh, colorful coasters...

that we'll be able to plant our deck soon and be eating yummy strawberries & tomatoes again this summer...

to sit here with my knitting and a good book....

to have some time to daydream.

well it's friday folks. am i excited this week is over? yes. am i looking forward to the weekend? not so much. the hubs has still been pretty sick around here, both girls are still not 100% and neither am i. hubs has to go put in some overtime this weekend which means i'm solo with my two babes. that equals no rest or relaxation in this momma's agenda.

i am going to try to fit in some cuddles though and maybe a few more splurges at starbucks for those naughty half price tea lattes (till the 20th)...i can't resist the prize for my fave chai tea latte...yum! i'm also going to try one of those chocolate chip cookie recipes you all so fabulously shared with me on our facebook page.. even more yum! i need me some chocolate this week...a girl's gotta splurge every once and a while right? especially since i'm judging the last week of project run & play - eeek! i have no idea how the heck i'm gonna do this. come help me out and vote k?

while everyone else is sleeping i'll be working on my guest post for celebrate the boy....yep, it's started! go check out all the good stuff on dana and rae's blogs. i'm also working on a guest post for katy of no big dill for her "once upon a thread" theme - an entire month of sewing inspired by children's books. i'm honored to be in such fabulous company and to be part of this fun theme on her equally as fab blog. go check it out!

remember that tute i told you all about that i was madly working on the other week? while it's done too but you have to wait till mid march to see it! i'll be posting on one of my fave crafty blogs and can't wait to share it and the news with all of ya next month!

so there ya have it...cookies (in my tummy), cuddles (with my 3 fave people), chai tea latte (to warm me up) and computer time (to hang with all of you)....hmmmm, maybe a not so bad weekend after all :)

what are you all up to? anything fun planned? have you been joining in on the chats on our facebook page? come "like" me...pretty please?

I Made Shoes....and the Sweet Pea Patterns Giveaway Winner!!!

i made shoes!!!!!! i can't believe it. i've never made shoes before and this whole process sort of freaked me out and made me so nervous i was going to screw them up. i'm happy to report though that they are not screwed up...not perfect...but not screwed up. cheri from sweet pea patterns instructions and photos were easy to follow and i found my nerves easing once i dived into the project.

whatcha think? you likie? i do. i made the 9-12months size and harper has a bit of room to grow into them but they look adorable on her. sorry no pics of her in them, she decided it was nap time during our photo shoot. are you interested in trying to make your own shoes but are feeling a bit hesitant? here are some tips for sewing sweet pea patterns "little london loafers" that i had:

- iron...a lot! i ironed everything over and over and over. it helped with the pinning and keeping everything lined up and on track. i love my iron and find it does wonders for me when i'm sewing. i didn't have fabric glue handy so the extra pinning and ironing allowed me to still make the shoes.

- the step where you are sewing the shoe together i also recommend a lot of pinning. pin till you can't pin no more. no pleats and my edges stayed lined up thanks to the tons of pinning.

- read the instructions through a few times before starting. i made an oopsie with the cutting of the pieces at the start because i got all gung ho and jumped ahead thinking i knew what to cut out. not fun. luckily i had just enough fabric left to recut.

- use the right needle for your machine and material. cheri shares this tip in the pattern but i wanted to stress this. it's always important to use a new needle for a new project and one that is for the kind of fabric you are working with.

shoe face...hahaha. couldn't resist posting that pic. mackenzie came over as i was shooting my pics and declared she wanted watermelon in the picture. i think the kid has a good eye..haha. she spotted those dots and thought they looked like eyes.

i had so much fun making these and know they will not be my last pair. next up...mackenie and then me. you can find patterns for your wee ones at sweet pea patterns, for your kidlets at sweet pea kids and for you at shoeology. cheri also sells waterproof soling material now so you can wear your fab shoes outside without ruining them! cheri - you rock girl! love you for making this so easy! and now on to the winner!!!!!

felicia - you're the winner! congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!! can't wait for you to whip some shoes up for your little ones! i'll be forwarding your info to cheri and she'll be in touch soon.

here's a pic of from one of our fave long time readers - buffy. this is her daughter wearing a pair of boots made from the super slouchy boot pattern from sweet pea patterns. aren't they adorable? i love seeing what you guys are all making so come join our flickr group to show off your sewing goodies!

happy shoe making everyone and thanks again for all the entries! have you tried out making your own shoes recently? do you have any tips to share with us?
