i'm looking forward to the weekend.  the hubs has lots of studying and exams coming up so this is our last weekend without him being gone cramming.  we're hoping for some more sunshine so we can get our beach time in when we can.  we're also hoping to check out some pirate fun at a local festival this weekend, as well as pool party today and some good friends to hang with tonight to cheer on our fave team - the vancouver canucks of course!!!

i'll be working on getting my legwarmers done at knit night so i'm free to start my sweater for the KAL next week.  i've also got a whole bunch of sewing i'm working on and some fun theme days next month coming up!  yippee!  you excited?  i am.  lots of sewing and knitting goodness coming your way folks!

what are you up to this weekend?  are you watching the stanley cup playoffs too?  you a bruins or a canucks fan?  what are you crafting?  let's chat ladies!

Summer Sweater Knit Along - Choosing Yarn Stress Free

Source: flickr.com
choosing yarns can be fun, exciting & thrilling, but it can also be scary, confusing and overwhelming.  i have gotten a few questions from you guys about yarn choices and such for your projects for the summer sweater knit along.  heck, i even had a ton of questions about yarn choices for my project.  it was a tricky one.  i had to bring the pattern to knit night to get the advice and wisdom of some of my fellow knitters.

since you all can't come to my knit night (i wish you could, wouldn't that be a riot!) i figured what better way to give us all an inside look into our yarn choices than having my pal buffy from passionate design, who is a die hard knitter over to luvinthemommyhood to help take the mystery and fear out of yarn picking and put back the allure and joy into it.  we spend a lot of money on our yarn and it can almost always make or break a garment so choose wisely and be smart about it but most importantly have fun with it!

let's hear from buffy...

Help for the Yarn Challenged by Buffy of www.passionatedesign.blogspot.com

You’re at your local yarn shop and while being surrounded by all that yummy yarn goodness creates some semblance of peace within you it also makes you feel overwhelmed. You’ve made the decision to knit a sweater and yet all the options for what you could knit it with makes your head spin. Just then a vibrant and outgoing woman comes in and she’s wearing a hand knit sweater and instantly the shop owner comments on it along with all the other customers. You shrink back just a little in amazement of her abilities.

Yet you overhear her talking about getting yarn for another sweater. She says that the yarn for the pattern she wants has been discontinued but since she rarely uses the yarn specified it doesn’t make her nervous. Then suddenly she’s quiet and you peek out from behind the display of Cascade 220 to see that she isn’t feeling the yarn like you usually do, but is reading the ball band. Some yarn she puts back without really touching the yarn and others she rubs up against her cheek and forearms.
She’s still perusing yarn when you check out, an armful of Cascade 220 in your arms because it is your go-to yarn and you picked out a bright yellow just to be a little different.

Does this scene sound familiar to you? Do you go yarn shopping only to come out with what you always buy? Maybe there isn’t a local yarn shop in your town and you have to get yours online. However, if you’ve ever despaired of finding the perfect yarn for a project despair no longer. What you need is just a few pointers about the fibers that we love and what makes them great for projects. I’ll let you in on what I’ve learned while knitting and watching others knit so that we can learn from each other. I am by no means an expert, but a knitting friend willing to share my little knowledge with you.

First you have to know that there are a variety of fiber types. You have your man made synthetics, nylon, rayon, acrylic and the like. Next are plant based, cotton, hemp, linen, bamboo and finally the knitters staple fiber animal based, sheep’s wool, alpaca, angora, cashmere. While many yarns are a blend of fibers, you need a basic understanding of each fiber’s characteristic and then those ball bands won’t be so baffling.

image via yogurtandgranola

Let’s start with the standard go to fiber, sheep’s wool. This is Cascade 220 or Knit Picks Wool of the Andes and it is great for layering sweaters, highly patterned sweaters, cables, and color work. Wool is elastic so you won’t have to worry about the weight of your sweater bringing the hem down to your knees. Also, wool is a water repellent. Most wool can hold up to 50% of their weight in water without feeling wet. This is why they are great for cloth diaper cover ups and if you live in a cold and wet area. Also, wool breathes which is great if you easily overheat. However, wool can be scratchy and also not everyone can wear wool. Plus wool can felt which means you’ll have to wash it by hand and dry flat. If you’re prone to laundry blunders you might want to rethink wool.

Of course sheep’s wool is not the only animal wool, there is alpaca, angora, cashmere, bison, yak…so many choices. I haven’t had as much experience with these yarns but there are a few things to watch for in these yarns. One, you’ll be drawn to them like a moth to a flame because of their super softness. For as soft as they are they are also that warm. You need not fear if the yarn will be next to your skin because of all animal based wool they are among the least scratchy. However, unlike sheep’s wool they aren’t very elastic and they will over time turn a tunic into a dressing gown. These yarns are for the most part best in blends, as they need a bit more stability and can shed really bad. You can combat the growing nature of these yarns by knitting with a needle one sized smaller so that your fabric is denser or knit one size smaller than normal to accommodate your yarns penchant for growth.

Source: flickr.com

Next up are our favorite plant based yarns. Sadly there are knitters among us who are allergic to wool also not every knitter is blessed to live in a cold region and wool is just too hot so they have to turn to plant based yarns for their knitting. Cotton is a great yarn. It is cool to the skin, breathes and for the most part easy to care for. However, cotton and many plant based fibers are hard on the fingers when you knit with it, also it has absolutely no elasticity so your sweater will grow. Cotton is also not water-repellent--if you get caught in the rain in a cotton sweater you will be very cold once you get home. Mercerized cotton describes the treatment that the cotton received. Mercerization is a process that they put the cotton through, it makes the cotton slightly softer and very shiny (you’ll have to google the process sometime, fascinating).

Linen is probably the best plant based fiber out there. It is super sturdy and can take the brunt of raising kids. However, it is one of the hardest fibers to knit with and it too does not have any elasticity. Yet once you’ve knit it up if you are diligent with your blocking you will have the softest sweaters ever, and linen will remain strong even though each time you wash it the sweater will grow softer.

Bamboo, Sugar Cane, Soy fibers are also plant based; however unlike cotton and linen they are very soft and easy to work with. They share the similar characteristics of plant based fibers (ie inelasticity and non water repelling) without sacrificing our fingers for knitting. If you have to knit with plant based fibers I highly suggest blends. They will help your fingers and you’ll get amazing drape too. One last thing about plant-based fibers is that while many manufacturers will say that they are to be dried flat, you can from time to time toss them in the dryer to help combat the growth you will get. However, don’t toss it in the dryer if you are unable to commit to watching it, you’ll have to check on it frequently just to make sure your sweater doesn’t shrink to fit your five year old ;)

The last of our yarn choices are synthetic fibers. While there is nothing inherently wrong with synthetics they have quite a few drawbacks. One, they don’t breathe and you will swelter in them. Two, the fibers melt so you can’t take them with you camping or your sweater might melt to you as you stand around the fire. Also, they don’t block. So if you’re working on a sweater with lace detail forget about stitch definition. Now, there are some high quality synthetics, but you’ll probably spend the same amount on a high quality synthetic as you would super wash wool. While I’m not a huge fan of super wash wool (they pill horribly) they do have some of the pros (breathability and elasticity) of animal based fibers.

My final recommendation is to knit up a swatch of the yarn you wish to use. Make it a decent sized swatch, 4-6 inches square and then throw it in your handbag or diaper bag and carry it around for a few days. The stress your swatch will receive in your bag will mimic wearing it and you can tell after a few days if the yarn is a good choice for your sweater.

Still if you’re struggling with yarn options ask someone! The lovely people at your yarn shop, your knitting group or even check out ravelry and the board there. As a knitter you need not fear that which we love so much and remember, even the best laid plans can go awry. Good luck and happy knitting!

thanks so much buffy!  you can find buffy on her blog passionate design where you can ask her any knitting related questions you'd like.  trust me, she loves to chat knitting & is always helping me out.  i learned a lot from this post and i hope you all did too!  next week we'll be talking about one of the most important parts of making a sweater.....your gauge! eeekkk!!! how to make your yarn work with your gauge & your gauge work with your yarn, how to even make a gauge and what all those thingamajiggers mean on the label of your yarn.  hahaha, it should be fun!  if you want to join in for the summer sweater knit along and haven't signed up yet, make sure to leave your name, ravelry name and blog (if you have one) in the comments to this post.  you can find all the other conversations for the KAL on this thread on ravelry.  and for all you sewers, don't worry, there will still be plenty of sewing talk going on here this summer too!

moments in the mommyhood - have no fear the carnival was here!

we hit up the carnival this weekend.  rides, music, cotton candy, games and that unforgettable buzz of excitement.  i swear you could feel the energy oozing off the kids.  i loved it.  this was mackenzie's first time even seeing a carnival so she was pumped.  our wee one is a bit of an adrenaline junkie when it comes to these things so we knew she would be geared up for the rides.  we thought maybe 1 or 2 that were just a simple circle ya know..start off slow.  ya right.  i should have known.  she wanted higher and faster.  so off we went to the mini roller coasters and flying helicopters.  she loved it!  i don't think i'll ever forget her face as she was flying through the air so happy, free and oozing with pride.  it was priceless.

the funny thing is that the hubs and i are wusses when it comes to carnivals.  we are scared of almost all the rides and just watching some of the adult ones had me dizzy and ready to barf.  i am pathetic, i know, but i'm scared of heights.  also when i was a teenager i would succumb to peer pressure and force myself to go on scarier rides and found myself in dangerous situations on more than one occasion where the machine broke or wasn't attached right and i almost fell out or got injured.  i now have a fear of those rides.  don't get me wrong, i love the carnival though.  i think my favorite part is the games.  i know they are sometimes a rip off but there is something about the excitement of winning a stuffie or having a boy win me one..wink wink..that i loved.  it was more fun than trying not to puke and cry in front of your friends if you get my drift :P

our camera died half way through so we missed out on a fair amount of pics (these were taken on our old camera, it was too hot to cart around our slr) so we missed out on a lot of fun stuff but when i got home low and behold...there were a fair amount of pics of this....

cute right? wait for it....

so funny.  if any of you have been a long time reader of this blog you all know how the hubs is notorious for stealing the camera and taking copious amounts of pics of him and the wee ones doing funny things and then leaving them on the camera for me to find.  the videos are hilarious. but i won't bore ya with those :P

how was harper during the carnival?  this was her.  sweaty and a tad grumpy from, as the hubs says, "being crammed in mom's cleavage for a few hours on a hot summer day".  what a guy.

do you remember your first time at the carnival?  anyone else have a fear of rides but still love going  to the carnie?  how was your weekend?  what did you get up to?  let's chat :)

the thief has been stopped....for the moment that is

Source: flickr.com via mae on Pinterest

sorry to be so quiet over the weekend but i felt the need to seriously unplug.  i've been busy in the background fighting The Thief.  i was in full blogger combat gear and went on a mission to not let The Thief to steal the joy out of blogging for me.  it took unplugging and several hours of thinking, hunting online, and reading all of your lovely comments, emails and tips to get me to suck it up and take this "Bleep" down (pardon my french).

i'm happy to report The Thief wrote me several emails, all of which admitted his guilt with apologies.  barf.  don't want to hear it Thief, just want you to take my content off your site!  hello!!!!  after admitting his said guilt he then said he would remove my content (he was stealing my rss feed) and stop tweeting his stolen feed as well.  for those of you who didn't know, The Thief is tweeting stolen content linking to to his sites filled with stolen content to bring traffic to his clients.  i have found two twitter accounts so far tweeting all of these tweets filled with my stolen content!  they have thousands of followers.  it's disgusting.  it's taking traffic from me.  it makes me sick...so i'm moving on off that topic.

back to the story....ah yes...he admits his guilt and says he will stop.  he then writes me back a few hours later and has the gall to ask if he fixes his wordpress plugin (that he says wasn't working properly..ya right!) to link back to me in the part that says posted by luvinthemommyhood (before it linked to his site only) could he keep stealing my rss feed.  hahahahaah! are you serious?!!  i thought he was kidding for a minute and then i realized he was seriously asking me that.  NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!  you cannot continue to steal my content.  needless to say i wrote him back a very polite email reiterating that....not.

so far the content appears gone.  the tweets have stopped.  but today will tell as it will be my first post since he said he stopped.  i will have to continue to keep my rss feed as a summary and have added a few sentences at the bottom of it reiterating my copyright and site name so future thieves can be just a little bit forewarned.  The Thief does this for a living.  he builds websites that have stolen feeds in them from popular blogs so his "clients" get a regular feed of traffic to their new websites.  he makes it sound legit...it is not.  so be proactive.  he had ads up on those pages and was profiting from my traffic taking business from my sponsors as well.  also, in terms of copyright, my content and images are fully copyrighted, him posting them illegally on his site changed my copyright to his which was creative commons.  people could take my images and my guests images/tutorials and use them in a different way then what my copyright states.  again, this is not ok.

when doing a google search for some of my content in some cases his links came up right under mine.  that is not OK.  check your feedburner under the "uncommon uses" section to see who is using your feed, do google searches, check on technorati for people linking to you and look to see who is talking about your content on twitter.  you may find wonderful new readers or you may find a Thief of your own.  one is good and one is bad but you are better off knowing about both of them.

the email that got the said Thief was the one to the IP Host.  it was him.  you all know who i was talking about.  oh, and thank you for all the offers to go to mead and knock on his door.  you guys rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  love you all.  i also filed a DMCA complaint with Google and with Twitter.  i have yet to hear from either but will keep you posted as to what will happen when i do.

i have to admit it really put a damper on my joy of blogging for a few days.  i was also sad to hear about how many of you have also had Thieves taking your patterns, posts and hard work and pretending that they are yours.  so to all you Thieves out there...watch out.  we are on a mission.  we will not accept you taking our content and our livelihoods.  get a life.  what you are doing is against the law.  you are obviously too dumb to read the copyright and understand it..i mean come on..you are a thief...so i'll put it clearly for you....IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO STEAL!

i urge all of you faithful readers of our blogging community to keep your eyes open.  if you see something that looks copied or stolen from a blog that you read please email us.  if we all work together we can catch these guys.  i know that i myself have written more emails than i would like to about stolen content.  i read thousands and thousands of blogs and i see all sorts of copyright infringements.  the best thing we can all do is to email the blogger and make them aware of what is happening so they can contact them and file a complaint.

what can you do if this is happening to you:

* file a DMCA complaint with google or with your blogging provider ex. wordpress.
* file a DMCA complaint with twitter if they are breaking your copyright on twitter as well.
* email The Thief directly asking them to remove your content and explain the situation.  i have to admit after hearing a lot of stories, most of these situations are women stealing bloggers patterns and passing them off as their own and seem to be too dumb to realize this is wrong.  so don't be too kind or fall for their cries of apologies.
* track down their IP address and email the registrant (not sure if this is the right word).  there are sites you can use to see who owns the domain and where the IP address is registered and to who.
* tweet The Thief.
* change your RSS feed from full to summary if your situation was the same as mine and they are stealing your feed.  put a summary burn statement after your feed stating your copyright and your website address.
* block The Thief''s IP address from accessing your site and feed.  their are sites that do this as well as wordpress and other blogging hosts (not blogger though) have a simple way of doing this.  it will also stop them from being able to comment on your blog if you  have someone harassing you.
*tell your readers.  you guys were my most powerful asset.  get help from your readers, work together to take the thief down.
*make yourself aware of your copyright and make sure it is stated on your blog clearly.

on a happier note, i would like to thank you all sooooooooooo much.  i "heart" each and every one of you.  thank you for giving me the courage and strength to keep fighting this guy when i was ready to give up.  i was able to get my posts that blogger had lost back thanks to him stealing my content as well.  so there was a silver lining..haha.  he had them all.  for all of you who emailed and commented please forgive me for not replying to all of you, i really felt the need to unplug and after this post probably not talk about it much.  it makes me too upset and angry.  so thank you again...big hugs.

i hope you all had lovely weekends and i'll be back tomorrow with our regular posts :)  here's a little joke for you all that cracked me up and was supposed to be in friday's weekend wishes.  also, if you haven't signed up yet, here's the link for our summer sweater knit along! and if you've already joined up - yippee and grab a button to sport on your blog (you can find it on the sidebar)!  so fun!  you can make any sweater/cardigan you'd like :)  i'm off to pick up my yarn today.

have you had this happen to you?  do you have any tips to add on how to fight The Thieves?

p.s. we are still looking for shops/businesses that would like to donate some gifts for the knit along in exchange for being a sponsor of the knit along and being featured on luvinthemommyhood.  if you're interested please email luvinthemommyhood@yahoo.ca for more info.

Yes, you, that's right...you are a THIEF!!!!!

Sadly there will be no weekend wishes today due to me spending a considerable amount of stressful hours trying to deal with a website stealing all of my content illegally and breaking my copyright.  I found the said thief by accident and have since been trying to take them down.  It saddens me that I have received no response from any of my actions and emails.  It angers me that I feel helpless that my blood, sweat and tears are being stolen from me and there is nothing I can do to stop it at this moment.

My RSS feed will now only be a summary, I apologize for the inconvenience as I know some of you enjoy reading it in your choice of reader but I believe this may be a case of a stolen feed.  Just in case it is not I am posting this to see if the said Thief will read it and get his/her butt in gear removing the stolen content of the said website.

A giant thank you to all of my lovely and loyal readers who have been helping me fight and battle this disgusting and disturbing situation and for providing me with a few laughs along the way.  Just so you all know I have already filed a complaint with google and am about to file one with Twitter as well due to the said Thief illegally tweeting my stolen content as well (not retweeting, simply tweeting the posts that are illegally posted on the said website).  I have emailed the website the stolen material is on, the website that developed the said site and the IP Host of the said site (not sure if that is the right wording).

I will keep you updated on the progression of my ongoing blogger battle but needless to say this person has messed with the wrong mama and I've donned my combat boots and am ready to take cyber battle..lol.  This person obviously has no idea how many hours of passion and love go into the development and writing of this blog.  It is my 3rd baby.  I protect my babies.  I am a mother.

If any of you have dealt with a similar situation tips and comments are much appreciated. And to you Thief.....take down my CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!

summer sweater knit along - sign up & the deets!

ohhhh, i'm so excited for this KAL!  i can't wait to get started!  are you guys ready??  you excited too?  so after chatting with you guys the KAL is going to start on june 15th!!  yippee!  i toyed a lot with the end date and finally decided to have us finish september 1st!  i know, it's not too far away, but i really wanted to give myself a goal so that the sweater would be done in time for the fall.  i really didn't want to still be working on this in october and i didn't think you guys would either.  i hope the date is still ok for everyone.  if any of you have concerns maybe we can have an extended finish for those of you who would like an extra month?

i've got some great posts lined up to keep us inspired during the KAL.  we're going to go over pattern picking and yarn choices, as well as gauge and needle size to start and then during the progression of our sweaters we can all chat and share what we're experiencing in the luvinthemommyhood ravelry forum group.  you can find the thread here.  i will also be posting about the KAL on here along the way with some of my pics and thoughts as well as yours too.  so get ready to document your progress folks!

then at the end of our KAL some of you mentioned the idea of having some fun prizes to give away.  i think that's a fabulous idea!  who doesn't love a prize right?  i've already got a few lined up and a giveaway but i would love to have enough prizes so we could have a fun awards ceremony of sorts for prizes like "most complicated pattern"...etc.  if anyone reading would like to donate a prize for the KAL please let me know.  this would be great promotion for your business/shop and there will be a post written about our gift sponsors.  we're looking for knitting related items such as yarns, notions, stitch markers, needles, patterns, gifts and accessories.  just send an email to luvinthemommyhood@yahoo.ca if you're interested.

i do have a few questions i would like to ask you all though.  when it comes to sharing pictures of our progress i'm sure some of you don't mind posting on your blogs but for those of us who don't have a blog or are on ravelry how would everyone feel about posting their pics in the luvinthemommyhood flickr group?  we can tag them "summer sweater kal 2011" and that way we can all see what each other has accomplished.  part of the fun of a KAL is being able to share in each others handiwork and encourage and inspire each other.  i think this would be the easiest way to include everyone.

Source: None via Josie on Pinterest
also.....i've got buttons for ya!!!!!!!!!!!!  i love me a button!  isn't she cute?  i hope you like her.  i sketched her out last night.  it was dark...so pardon the imperfections :P  you can grab a copy for yourself on the sidebar.

i know a lot of you have commented here and on facebook that you are joining in on the KAL, but i would love to put together a list of contributors.  i'll do my best to cross check those other posts but if anyone interested in joining the kal could comment on this post saying you are in and leaving a link with the name of your blog and ravelry name (if you have one) that would be fab!  that way i can keep track of all you talented ladies!  i'm thinking of doing a post later where we can all share what sweaters we are working on so others can have a great resource list of some fabulous patterns to choose from at a later date and it will be easier to know who you all are now.  what do you think?

ok.....get those needles ready!  go drool over your queue, favorites and bookmarks and start thinking about which pattern you're gonna whip up.  watch out summer...here come the knitters!!!

p.s. you can find all the posts about the summer sweater knit along here.

Book Review - Little Things to Sew

sunshine, sunshine, come our way!  we've got our hats on & we're ready to play!  sorry...couldn't help myself!  i recently got my hands on a copy of the FABULOUS book "little things to sew: 20 classic accessories and toys for children" by oliver + s designer liesl gibson and it just makes me happy!!!  that sunshine and skipping kind of happy.  so excited and so in love with this book!  it's gorgeous!  the photography is stunning, the patterns are fun and scream liesl with the finishing and attention to tiny details.  you won't be disappointed.

there are projects in the book for every level of sewer and for every season of the year.  from mitts and hats to vests, tutus and smocks!  there's even a puppet theatre and bento box!  hello!!!!!!! so fun!!!!

i think mackenzie looked at the book just as much as i did.  she loved it and chose the reversible bucket hat as our first project.

the instructions were clear, concise and easy to follow.  the hat turned out great and i think she looks pretty darn cute in it!  you always know when something is good when it passes the "kid test".  sometimes i love things and she doesn't and she loves this hat.  she happily modeled it for me even picking out a bright yellow outfit (skirt and shirt) to match!  don't you just love a 4 year olds fashion sense...so fun!  they have no fear.

perfect for sunny days, beaches, parks and outdoor fun!  i love that it's reversible!  i've got a problem choosing fabric for projects because i love so many so having reversible projects are always my fave!  the best of both worlds!  a little peek here, a little peek there.  i even smacked my label on the brim of one side too :)

i can't wait to make more of liesl's patterns!  check these out!

this bag even comes in adult size!  oh my, mackenzie and i could have matching bags!!!!! count me in!!!!!!!

you know i love me a simple and modern quilt.  so fresh!

heck even the appendix is gorgeous in this book!  i love the style and vibe of the book as well.  it's fresh and feels new and modern.  the appendix has helpful information and is easy to understand for even a beginner sewer.  the pattern pieces weren't overwhelming and i didn't hyperventilate when seeing them.  yes, i freak out when things look wayyyyyyy too complicated.  i'm still learning here folks!  i'm always happy to find a book that is accessible and filled with projects that challenge me in a positive way, not in a way that makes me want to quit the project and cry.

if you're looking for some year long inspiration and a beautiful handy and resourceful sewing book to add to your collection make sure to check out "little things to sew" by liesl gibson.  beware though...you may end up with a child that looks like the pic above :P  happy sewing!

you can find lots more info on "little things to sew" here at oliver + s, a fun youtube video here, and all things liesl gibson - liesl & co. and oliver + s here:

watch for liesl's fabric line "modern workshop" out now as well! and if you haven't seen her line of women's sewing patterns - lisette, go check them out now. so pretty!

are you a fan of liesl's work?  what is your fave oliver + s pattern?  fave project in the book?

P.s. fabric was from on our my fab sponsors - Crafty Girls Workshop.  Check them out!

The MODify Dress Tutorial!!

The MODify dress tutorial is finally available as a free downloadable pdf! I like having pdf's of the patterns/tutorials I make.  I find it easier to follow instructions with my print outs rather than referring over and over again to my computer screen.  I also like to have a copy in case i make it more than once or lose my link.  So for those of you who are like me and dig pdf's here ya go. For those of you who missed this post mid may I was asked to join on "free pattern month" on one of my fave all time blogs "grosgrain".  I was thrilled. It was perfect timing because I had been preparing to do something I haven't done before....make a dress for myself! That's right folks! Something for ourselves. Not for the kidlets. Not sure about you guys but I'm always sewing for my kids or for gifts and I always seem to get put to the wayside. It's scary unknown territory for me to make a dress but I knew i had to do it.

*Please note the model in the pics is my sister who is a few sizes smaller than me. She's modelling the dress that was made for my body so it's a bit big on her :P

I've been so frustrated dress shopping lately and haven't been able to find anything that fit me right that covered the dreaded post baby bump (hate!). Darn c-section :P So instead of whining and crying to my hubs and anyone else who would listen I decided to just make one. Thus the Modify Dress Tutorial was born!!! I've been feeling so inspired by old movies (mostly from the 60's) lately and wanted a fun, short, mod spring dress that's simple to make and simple to "modify". This dress will give you a great base to personalize, add some pizazz too or keep modern and simple. It's flattering and can be worn a ton of different ways. Lengthen it for fun or shorten it to make a tunic. Sleeves..no sleeves. V-neck or round neck - it's up to you. Add length and width to the front panel and you've got a great maternity dress! And the best part is that there are no pieces to print out, this dress is all customizable to your own body size. So no gaping at the arms, tight boobage, or pulling on the hips. You use your measurements to create the dress that's right for you.

the best dress for those warm sunny breezes...

and for relaxing days.

wherever you plan to wear this dress you'll be comfy, stylish and relaxed.

I still consider myself a beginner to intermediate sewer and I'm still learning so this tutorial is written in a way that I find easy to understand. There may be more technical terminology or fancier ways to do things but hey....we all gotta start somewhere right? I also decided to do something different with this tutorial. Instead of photographing every single step (which I usually do) I decided to try drawing some this time. I'm a very visual learner but I sometimes find it hard to see what people are doing in pics and thought it would be fun to mix it up. I love to draw and grew up an art geek so it was nice to get some time with my pen and paper instead of computer.

So get ready to modify, customize and sport a rocking dress and, if you're like me, hide that post baby bump!!!!

The MODify Dress Tutorial
(if you just want to print it without downloading click on the link above and it will show you that option in the sidebar on scribd.)

Materials:

- 2 yards (plus depending on your size) of main fabric. I used light weight cotton.
- scraps of contrasting or same fabric for pockets, to cover buttons and to make your own bias tape if you choose to.
- coordinating thread
- sewing machine
- bias tape maker (optional)
- bias tape (optional)
- buttons
- embroidery thread
- sewing needle
- scissors or rotary cutter/mat
- washable/disappearing fabric pen or dressmakers chalk
- 3 buttons that are made to be covered with fabric (& your little kit that came with them)
- drawing paper (Optional)
- Freezer Paper/Pattern Paper (Optional)

Instructions:

(I'll be sewing with a 1/2" seam allowance. These instructions were written for someone with a sewing machine and not a serger. If you have a serger this dress should be super fast for you to whip up.)

This dress is a fun way to take a basic shaped dress and practice customizing and modifying dresses to your own body shape and size. I don't have a dress form so this is how it goes in my house :)

1) Start by taking measurements of your body. This can be a bit tricky sometimes so if you have a pal around to help take advantage of it. Write down the measurements shown in the diagram.
2) Make sure your fabric is washed, dried and pressed before sewing and starting a project. The last thing we want is a dress that shrinks after the first wash :P Fold fabric in half making sure the stretchiness is going left to right instead of top to bottom. Test this by pulling on your cotton to see where the give is.

3) Now we are going to create and cut out our pattern pieces and fabric. There are 3 options to choose from. I did a combo of Option A and Option C.

Your Hip Measurement + 4-5"
Your Bust Measurement + 3-4"
Your Waist Measurement 1/2-1"

Keep in mind these are just a suggestion. You can also search on google information about adding ease to your garment and more in depth information on taking your measurements.

Option A: Sketch out your dress. Draw a rectangle on a piece of paper. On this rectangle mark down your measurements. Now we're gonna play some connect the dots. We're going to draw a bit of a triangle to replicate the shape of the dress. This will give you a rough idea of what to draw and cut out of your fabric.

- I'm doing a mod style dress. I drew out a rounded neck that dips lower in the front than in the back (so I don't have to worry about the girls popping out) with wide straps (to cover the bra). I also wanted my dress to be loose (to hide the overhang..you all know what I'm talking about..don't pretend ya don't..haha) and short to show off my gams :P The fun part is that this where you get to play! Do you want a v-neck or round neck? Or maybe a boatneck? Draw it out. Do you want sleeves or no sleeves? What length? A tunic or dress? Now is when you can decide. It's all up to you.

-You can now choose to transfer this to size on freezer paper or other paper you use for pattern tracing and then use this as a pattern to cut out your dress or you can move on to Option C at this point, like I did, or skip this step and move on to Option B.
Option B: Use a dress you already own and like the fit of as a template. Lay the dress down on your fabric (folded and then placed on the fold) and trace around the shape adding your seam allowance and making the modifications to the basic shape of the Modify Dress (I didn't use this option as I currently don't have a dress that I like the fit of). There are a ton of great tutorials online with tips on how to do this option.

Option C: Use the sketch you drew and your measurements to make a mock dress from muslin or other fabric. I used a plain white cotton to make the dress so I could put the tutorial together for you all. I liked the idea of having the mock dress to play with after and change up etc to make another dress and use to trace out on pattern paper to keep for later sewing. This is a great dress to use as a standing off point for your body sizing for a ton of other dress styles. I also find it easier to do this method as a new sewer to get accurate sizing and fit for my body. I find it a fun experience to learn by trial and error how to make the correct adjustments for fit to my body.

a) Draw your pattern onto your "mock dress" fabric using your body measurements and sketch of dress as a guide adding your seam allowance and ease to the drawing.
b) Cut out your pattern pieces taking care to make sure the fabrics give is going the right way.
c) Pin dress and try on.
d) I used a combo of pins and fabric marker to mark any changes I need to make in shape and sizing to my "mock dress".
e) Baste the dress. I basted both side seams and the back seam and then the straps trying the dress on as I went making alterations as needed.
f) Cut and trim any excess fabric you may have leaving only the 1/2 seam allowance.
g) Pull basting out, press the pieces and use the front and back pieces as your pattern template.
h) Place mock dress pieces on your dress fabric and get ready to cut.

3) Cut out your pieces. You should now cut out the following:

1 - Front piece cut on the fold.
2 - Back pieces. One left and one right.
1 - Scrap piece of fabric big enough to cut out the fabric for your 3 covered buttons.

***Don't cut out or draw your pockets yet. We will do this in step 5.

4) Iron and press all your pieces. You can never iron too much ladies so make sure to best bud it up with your iron. I also love to use some yummy linen spray when I iron to get those stubborn creases out of my fabric.

5) Cut out your pocket pieces. I like this one tutorial from "freshly picked" but you can draw your hand out and make your own pocket to your size liking as well. You will have 4 pieces all together. 2 pieces for each pocket. Use a fabric marker and mark placement of where you would like pockets to be placed on your dress on both the front and backs of the dress. Remember this is totally optional. Don't want a pocket? Skip adding it. Want a pocket on the front instead? Go rock it out! It's your dress and your style! I've been digging all the side pocket looks so I knew I wanted to add them to this short, springy dress.

6) Ok, now you've got all your pieces cut out we're ready to....modify...and of course, sew! This is the fun part folks! Lay out your front piece right side up and let's get those pockets sewn on!

a) Take your pocket pieces and pin right sides facing down (see diagram) to both sides of the front and to the outer sides of both of your back pieces.

b) Sew along the edge of the pocket that matches up with the outer edge of your fabric with a 1/4" seam allowance. Make sure to use a smaller seam allowance than the one you are sewing the main parts of your dress with.

c) Press the pocket pieces away from the dress.

d) Pin your sides of the front to the sides of the back of your dress lining up the pockets. Sew your side seams together also sewing around the edge of the pocket as you go with a 1/2" seam allowance. See diagram. Finish seams with either a zig zag stitch or trim with pinking shears. Turn dress right side out and press the pocket inside and the outer edge of your dress.

7) Pin your two inner back piece edges together. Mark with your fabric pen where you would like your back opening to start. Mine was 6" down from the top. With right sides together, sew the back body pieces together making sure to stop at mark for where you would like your back opening to end. Finish seams with either a zig zag stitch or trim with pinking shears. Press open.

8) Try on your dress again. You're looking fab!!! Pin and adjust where you would like your straps. Also mark where what length you would like to hem your dress too. Take your dress off, turn inside out and sew along the strap edge. Finish this seam as well with either a zig zag stitch or trim with pinking shears. Press your seam open.

9) Now we're going to hem the dress. Using the measurement for length you took earlier and the marking you just made as a guideline for your hen length. I prefer to hem using a double fold hem or clean finish hem. You don't have to worry about unfinished edges and it always looks nice and clean. Here's a link to a great tutorial showing a double fold hem as well from Sew4Home.

a) With wrong side facing simply fold (press as well) your unfinished edge up 1/4".
b) Then fold (and press again) another 1/2"-1" depending on your hem allowance.
c) Topstitch along the hem. I topstitched mine twice for a double seam because I liked the look.

10) Press the rest of your fabric for your back opening. Trim edges with your pinking shears. We're now going to make your button loops. I love this tutorial from the talented knitting designer Ysolda Tseauge. It adds such a pretty and feminine touch to the dress. I sewed my loops through the underside of the pressed edge so this would be hidden when we sew down the seam. (You could make this using coordinating or contrasting fabric as well or just forgo the buttons totally and sew up the rest of your back just take care to double check based on the neckline you cut if the dress can be put on over the head without an opening.)

11) Cover your buttons with your fabric that you set aside (or use buttons of your choice). Mark placements of buttons making sure they line up with the loops you have made and sew them on. I am hopelessly addicted to fabric covered buttons so I did mine to match my dress.

11) Sew down the outer edges of the back opening stopping at the bottom of the opening.

12) We're now going to finish off the edges of our neck and armholes.

Option A) It's time to make some bias tape. You can choose to finish with a different color or coordinating colored bias tape or you can simply make your own. I like to use this tutorial from Smashed Peas and Carrots as a guideline for sewing bias tape. I recently bought a bias tape maker and it's fun to use! Just remember to hold it up slightly while using to keep the ends folded nice and close and press as you go. You can see more on making your own bias tape over on a great post on Made.

Option B) Use the bias tape but have it not show. I love this method! It's fun and oh so easy to do and I like the finished look. You don't have to make your own bias tape and it's fast and easy to attach. I like to use the technique used on this tutorial from the lovely ladies over on Prudent Baby. I chose to do Option B for my dress.

13) Press all seams and trim lose threads. Add on a label if you like to as well. Try on your dress! You're done!!! Wasn't that fun? You look gorgeous! Enjoy :)

moments in the mommyhood - the bug took me down

i got taken down by another nasty bug again.  it took the weekend wishes out of me and my post for today :(  this year has been the crappers for health for me but i'm hopeful the rest of it is gonna be awesome!  i missed hearing what you were all up to this weekend.  anything fun?  any crafting?

even though i've been sick i did get out to soak up the sun while i could.  heck, i don't care that my nose is pouring buckets, my lips are chapped & poofy (this happens to me when i get a bad cold), my head is pounding and i have a fever... that won't keep me from laying at the beach :P  you never know when the rain is going to come so you take the sun while you can get it.  i also managed to drag myself to knit night for some creative medicine.  i tell you, some yummy tea, my knitting, some kick ass jazz and good company can make a girl feel soooo much better.  i even got one of my legwarmers done!  woot woot!  i'm hopelessly addicted to the magic loop method now!  you must try it.

but i haven't just been knitting.  i've been sewing a lot too.  i can't wait to show you all what i've been working on.  so adorable!  i've finished a pressie for a friend's new baby and am working on two more things for my girls.  hopefully i'll get those done this week.  i'm running behind on my sewing though.  i tried to get a lot done this weekend but it proved not to be a good idea as i missed cutting out pattern pieces, sewed things to the wrong parts, sewed them the wrong way, and spent more time with my seam ripper than i have ever wanted to.  moral of the story....don't sew when you are sick :P

do you ever find that even though you are feeling down and under the weather that you will still try to pick up your sewing or knitting when you can't do anything else?  it's cathartic isn't it?  it takes my mind off my ailments and whatever is bothering me and helps to just let me escape a little from my own self induced pity party..haha.  so stay tuned this week, hopefully there will be pics of my little projects (sewn together properly this time), a fab book review and some other goodies for you all!

soooooo....how was your weekends ladies?  whatcha been crafting?  pull up a chair, i've got coffee on and i'm in the mood to chat :)

Knitting 911 - Summer Sweater Knit Along!!

we've got a winner and we've got a new summer project to do together! i've chosen the "effortless cardigan by hannah fettig" for my summer sweater. knitting isn't just for the winter ladies! we can knit all year round! in fact this weekend i was just at the beach in the sunshine knitting away on my legwarmers. who says we have to put our sticks away cause the sun is out? knitting is an all year past time in our house. it's easily transportable, it's fun, relaxing, soothing, and stress relieving...all things a mother on the go needs.

reader gynnab suggested we do a knit a long together on last week's post where you all so graciously helped me decided which sweater to whip up this summer. i got super excited and after chatting with some of you we all decided a knit along would be the perfect project for this summer! everyone can pick the sweater of their choice that's the most flattering for your body type and we'll all knit them together...virtually of course :) let's all spread the love of knitting through any season and make some summer sweaters together. the perfect cardi or pullover can be the perfect touch for a stroll on the beach or lounging in the backyard for a bbq. throw it on with shorts, a skirt or as a wrap over your summer dress.

i'll be putting together some info on the KAL and get things ready for us all to join in. i wanted to give you all a heads up so you can choose your sweater pattern and get your yarn stash ready and i also wanted to get your feedback on when you would like to start the KAL. i was thinking mid june?? what do you ladies think? is that enough time to get yarn and get patterns ready? i'll whip up some fun buttons for us to sport on our blogs (if you have one) and the KAL will take place in our luvinthemommyhood ravelry group.

what pattern are you planning on making for the KAL? do you have any suggestions you'd like to see included for the KAL? what date do you prefer as a start date? happy knitting ladies! i'm so excited to make my very first sweater! it's about time....14 years or so is a long time to wait..haha.

moments in the mommyhood - free in the breeze

we finally got some sunny weather here on the island and we took full advantage of it. we headed to one of our local tourist attractions "beacon hill park". so gorgeous there and lots of fun for the kidlets at the playground and petting zoo. harper got to see a lot of animals for the first time. she especially loved mimicking the peacocks very loud yell over and over again. and look at my other daughter.....

dressed to impress for the zoo. she was adamant that she had to bring her purse and wear her shades, that of course, match mommies. she even convinced me to buy her a new pair of clip on earrings that thankfully i talked her into not wearing to the park. don't you just love it when they start to show their personalities in their chosen ensembles? so funny!

i couldn't resist posting a pic of this alpaca at the zoo. don't you just get a kick out of his toothy grin? i swear he was taunting my friend amy and i with his coat of hair. i kept thinking of what i could knit out of him and he kept looking like he was guffawing at me.

recognize those jeans? yeppers, jasper is sporting the kneepad jeans i made amy for her baby shower. so cute! harper has now decided she is in love with our friend amy's new baby boy jasper. she would not stop trying to hold his hand and squealing with excitement every time she touched it much to his chagrin.

mackenzie and amy's other son rowan got to brush the goats and check out the new baby pigs along with all the other animals.

we then had some playground & yummy cookie eating excitement (check out amy's deliciously fabulous new blog "family feedbag", it's filled with yumminess galore!)...followed by some impromptu waterpark fun that let's just say i wasn't too thrilled with. i know, i know, it's fun for them but i'm just one of those moms who thinks about the aftermath of the fun and let me just say this had an aftermath.

both kids decided they couldn't resist the temptation of running through the giant water spray. unfortunately this was not in the plan so even though i had packed half our house for our playdate i did not bring mack another ensemble..haha. she was soaked to the bone. she had to walk 5 minutes back to the car drenched in her jeans (not comfortable) with a sweater i had brought that only had 2 buttons at the neck (she was revealing a bit too much for my liking..haha) and once we got to the car i had to strip her down and let her ride nudie baby. omg. i couldn't get the jeans off her due to her being so soaked and the whole time i'm trying to strip her down she's screaming "everyone is going to see my bum mommy! everyone is going to see my vajajy!!!!" it was hilarious. too funny to describe perfectly here. i ended up wrapping her butt in a blanket and then putting her in the car seat while then wrapping another blanket around her. thank god i had a whole bunch of blankies in the car. the fun part was picking up the hubs from work with a sopping wet, nude toddler in the back seat and trying to describe why. priceless.

have you had any of those funny mommyhood moments lately? have your kiddos had to have a "free in the breeze" nudie baby rides home in the car? i love hearing your stories! share in the comments below and let's have a chat ladies :)

tgif. i'm excited for the weekend folks. that blogger crash really did a number on me. i lost a lot of work, almost lost my entire tutorial for the MODify dress and i am still missing posts and your wonderful comments. saying i was a wee bit stressed was an understatement. so i'm super excited that we get a three day long weekend here in canada and i'm super excited to have 3 whole days with the hubby!!! it's like an early xmas pressie! we've got plans but we don't. you know those weekends when you don't want to schedule anything but you wanna have fun? that's our weekend.

i've got a busted bed, a busted coffee maker among other things and errands must be run. harper needs a new carseat (any recommendations?) and our condo is in desperate need of reorganization. tax season did a number on us and we need to purge, purge, purge. i'm hoping that in between the purging, researching and shopping that we'll have time to play, laugh, cuddle, drink some good coffee, work on my knitting and finish up two new sewing projects i've got on the go.

the sun is shining and the baby is smiling at me with that "come over and play with me mommy eyes" when she should be napping so i'm keeping this one short folks. wishing you all a sunshine and good times filled weekend. get oustside, craft, snuggle and do all things yummy! see ya next week :)

what are your weekend wishes? what did you whip up this week? any new projects you want to share?

knitting 911 - sweaters in the summer??!!?

i know what you're all thinking....sweaters in the summer??? wth? well it seems i'm on a roll with making things i've never done before. i feel the urge to conquer all things unknown and scary to me lately. since i finally got a dress made for myself (click here to make one too) i figured i might as well make myself a sweater too! (click on the pictures to go to the patterns)

yep, that's right. i've never made myself a sweater. i've knit since i was a little girl and never made myself a sweater. i think it's about time to change that. i've made them for kids, and for exes (yes, i made the dreaded ex-boyfriend sweater) but not for myself.

i thought i would share some of my fave pics from ravelry and my knitting pinterest board with you all. these are the ones that are haunting me lately. i'm looking for something that's cozy, flowy and fun....

something that is perfect for dressing up or down...

that is timeless and great for all seasons...

something that is springy and pretty...
only thing is i need your help. i can't for the life of me decide which sweater to whip up. i'd prefer not to be on small needles since struggling through the stella pixie hat but if it's pretty enough i may be swayed.
so help a girl out....which one of the sweaters above do YOU think i should make? remember, i'm a busty gal with some curves...the girls are not easily hidden..haha. enter your vote in the comments below...pretty please? (i had to take the poll out, it was pissing me off and not showing the right amount of answers. sorry to those who already voted on there.)

what's your favorite sweater/cardigan pattern for spring/summer? do you have one that's on the top of your "must make list".
