SUMMER SWEATER KNIT ALONG - KNITTING IS BETTER WITH FRIENDS

knitting is almost always better with friends.  the more the merrier.  even one can be way more fun!

i heart my knitting group.  i count down the days of the week until it's saturday.  a few hours with good friends, yummy coffee and my knittng?  helloooo....and the hubby has to ask me why i get so excited? love it.  it's like therapy for me now.  a stress release and a feeling of companionship being able to chat with other mommies who are also as equally obsessed with crafty things as i am.  heck there's even books and movies made solely about knit nights.  women have been doing it for ages.  we can't be that nutso right???!

a good knit night can be hard to find though.  especially if you are new to where you are living. it took me a few years of living here to find one and that was only because a friend i decided to start one & it grew from there.  all of the ones i found in my city didn't work with my hubbies schedule and i had gotten to the point of giving up.  so i thought it only fitting to do a little post on how and where to find a knit night in your town.

i think the first place i always look is on www.ravelry.com.  you can find groups on there no problem.  if you click on groups on your main menu bar when logged in the above screen will come up (the pic above will be on the right side) and you can search for groups who meet in person and who are online.  search by place, craft etc...

next up is to ask your local yarn shops.  a lot of shops offer knit nights in their stores.  i found that the times of these meetups were often inconvenient for me with children as they were during the day a lot but that could work perfect for you.  even though your local shop may not have a knit night i'm betting they know of someone who does that they can refer you to.

don't forget to check your local classifieds or coffee shops a lot of groups post info about their meetups locally and will advertise in these places.

start your own.  get one friend or 2 or three and start from there.  you'll be amazed at how fast it will grow by word of mouth and through the natural networking of people.

think outside of the box.  you can have knit nights in a coffeeshop, restaurant, yarn shop, each others homes, online...heck one of our kal participants suggested a skype knit along.  how fun is that idea!  get creative, there's a group out there for you or one just waiting to be made :)  you won't regret it.  the best friendships can be made over coffee and yarn.  it's a great way to get inspired, stay on track with your wip's and to get help when you're stumped.  the brain break from crying kids always helps too :P

so get knitting with some friends.  you can find a group (or start one) i know you can and just in case you can't find anything take comfort knowing that there will always be a friend to chat knitting with in our luvinthemommyhood ravelry group come join!  the knit along's will hopefully be year round & there's always a bit of chitter chatter.  everyone is welcome :)

are you in a knitting group?  how did you find/start yours?  are you looking for a knitting group to join?  how's your KAL project coming along?  happy knitting ladies :)

*all conversations about the KAL can be found in our luvinthemommyhood ravelry group thread here.  you can find all the previous KAL posts here.  it's never too late to join in!  you can also friend me on ravlery.com under luvinthemommyhooddon't forget to email me if you blog about your KAL project, i love seeing how yours is going.

and don't forget to show our lovely summer sweater knit along sponsors some love!!

Sewing with Knits Mondays - Super Speedy Simple Skirt Tutorial from Katy of No Big Dill

i hope you all had a fabulous and relaxing weekend and are all raring and ready to go with your knits this week!  i've got another fabulously talented guest in the mommyhood today!  so excited!  the lovely and oh, so sweet katy of one of my faaaaavvvooorite blogs "no big dill" is here today with us!

now katy needs no introduction from me but i can't stop myself from writing about her awesomeness :) this girl has some serious sewing skills.  her eye for details and for those special little things on a project just blow my mind.  i can't get enough of her blog, her sewing and her gorgeous family.  katy's just about ready to have baby number six!  can you believe it! wowsa!  this is one talented, and not to mention busy, momma :)

a big thank you to katy for her guest tutorial today - so fun and lovely, and for coming to guest even thow you're almost ready to pop!  you inspire me so.  i've got a pressie in the works for you my sweet friend and i cannot wait to see who the newest  member of the dill clan will be :)  i'm getting boy vibes.....

 now let's hear from katy...

Hello, Luvinthemommyhood readers!  I always delight in a visit over here.  Shannon is about the most positive, happy person I know.  I think this Sewing with Knits is a brilliant series because knits are more on the scary-don't-ever-use side when choosing fabric to sew with.  I wanted to come up with a project for you that would o1 come together quickly and o2 provide you with a positive experience of using knits if you've never tried your hand at them.
If you've spent any time on my blog, you know my affinity for ruffles.  I like me some good ruffle.  (I do have 5 girls after all and I admit that I'm worried if I have a boy all that will come to an end.)  So, what you'll need is 1/2-1 yard of knit, 3/4-1 yard of woven cotton for the skirt base, some 3/4" elastic, and ribbon or lace for the back.  This skirt comes together in about an hour, one of those quick, satisfying projects.  What I came up with was sewing knit onto cotton so you don't have to struggle with the knit keeping it's shape, but you get a feeling for sewing with knit, making you bolder and braver for future projects ;)
o1 Determine the length of the skirt you want (just FYI, this won't work very well for a full length, long skirt).  Add 2" to accommodate the waistband casing and the hem.  The width is also to taste, wider for a fuller skirt, narrower for a straighter skirt.  Fold the top down 1/4" and then 1" and press.  Stitch in place 1/8" in on both sides of casing.   Fold bottom of skirt up 1/4" twice, press, and stitch in place.
o2  Cut strips of your knit.  I fell in love with this knit because I love to manipulate fabric, but I was fascinated that this fabric was already manipulated.  Curvy tucks have been sewn through the whole piece, creating a pattern of it's own.  (More on the knit fabric later....wink, wink!)  I did the first two rows 3" and the second two rows 4".  Gather each strip by basting and pulling one of the threads, pushing the fabric along the other thread.
o3  Knits have a lengthy list of fabulous qualities, but one of them is that they don't fray, so if you don't mind a more casual look, there is no need to hem the edges.  Yea for less work!
o4  Pin each row in place on skirt base.  I chose to use a contrasting fabric, and to allow the skirt base to show (for visual interest) by spacing the ruffles by 1/2 and inch.  Stitch in place using a slight zig-zag.  Thread elastic through casing and pin in place on both sides.
o5  With right sides together, fold skirt in half, hamburger ways, and stitch.  You can leave the last 3-4 inches open and create a small slit in the back by folding the seam allowance down and stitching up each side.  Tie a bow out of ribbon or lace and stitch to the back center.
Choosing to work with solid colors or simple patterns like stripes gives you the opportunity to play with fabric and color combinations more=more fun!
On the kid-friendly and ease-of-care-for-mom spectrum, knits are super-stars, probably oscar (or some other coveted trophy) worthy.  So, if you've been afraid to dip your toe in the knit pool, start with this project and you won't be disappointed.
And if you're wondering where I got such great fabric AND a chance to win a yard for your own sewing pleasure, come on over to my blog.

Thank you, Shannon, for inviting me over to play!

you're most welcome katy.  thanks again...xoxox.

make sure you guys pop on over to noodlehead to see anna's guest abby from sew much ado's tutorial for today!  so fun! looking for the other sewing with knits mondays posts?  click here to read them all :)  and if you make some knits from our "sewing with knits mondays" tutorials or are inspired by them make sure to add your pics to our flickr group that anna started.  i can't wait to see all of your projects and stay tuned for next monday, i've got another fun top tutorial of my own to share!

have you ever sewn with ruffled stretch fabric before?  what's your fave skirt to make that's stretch/knit?  i love seeing what you're making & which patterns/tutorials you're using.  happy sewing ladies!

weekend wishes

to make a giant placemat...

to finish my unfinished projects...

to get my hands on some of this wasabi washi tape fabric...

to have coffee and knit here...

to figure out what i did to my new machine so i can continue to do this...

and to get some beach crafting time in.

yes, you read that right above, my machine isn't working.  i did something to it and don't know what :(  i'm very stressed...lol.  with my old devil i could open it up and look to see if some thread is jammed but with this one i have no idea what to do. i was just happily sewing along and then error message on the screen and it won't sew now. all i know is that i'm just waiting for my dealer to open to call and cry for help :)  worst part was i was sooooo close to being a done a fun project for sewing with knits monday.  here's crossing my fingers i didn't do anything too bad to it.

our weekend is going to be pretty low key.  the hubs has a fun weekend planned (sans the girls & i) but that's only fair seeing as last week i had a few breaks from the kidlets.  so the girls and i will be laying low, relaxing and hopefully attempting to hang at the beach again.

if my poor poppy gets fixed i will be fully immersed in harper's quilt.  i'm obsessed with it now that i am loving the quilting design i decided on.  i just want to sit there and get it done.  anyone else working on a project like that?

wishing you all a project finishing, happy crafting, sunshine filled, coffee fueled, family fun & laughter kind of weekend :)  what are your plans?  what are your weekend wishes?  you know i love hearing about what you are all up to.  comment below...

Thrifty, thrifty...& some vintage goodness

i finally got to get my thrifty groove on yesterday.  man oh man, it's been eons since i've been able to get out there and scour the dusty aisles..lol.  i'm not sure why, but i just haven't been thrifting in what feels like at least a month or two.  i was starting to get antsy and get that vibe...you know the one i mean...the one that makes you feel like something is calling to you to come and find it.  it drives me nuts so i packed up both kidlets, hooked my sis into joining me & we hit up the local vv (value village).

first off i don't know why i don't learn to just suck it up and pay for parking.  i mean seriously, one hour in our giant vv is just not enough.  we had to set an alarm to go off on her phone just to give us enough time to make it to the till so we didn't get a parking ticket.  i'm just cheap.  i hate paying for parking.  i think i need at least a good solid 2 hours in vv to really feel like i didn't miss out.  i only got to look at housewares, fabric/linens, & toys (had to squeeze this in to keep the 4yr old happy) with a few clothing racks thrown in but that's just the tip of the iceberg.  i didn't even get over to the furniture or really look at clothing.  darn it all.  next time, next time.

i think i got a good haul.  i got my new fave pitcher (top of post) which matches my kitchen colors perfectly.  it's real glass too which is a big coup in my book.  i always seem to find cute fake glass ones and never glass so i was happy.  the pitcher is happy too. she get's to join all her new vintage friends & be rescued from the dark, dirty lonely shelves of the vv.  i got about 2 yards at least of the above home dec weight fabric.  love the geometric print and the colors.  i think a bag is in my future or pillows.  we'll see :)

i fell instantly in love with this pink and green hankie.  so adorable! this is going on a dress for one of the girls pronto!  it makes my heart swoon.  i also managed to find my first thrifted doily!  i never find doilies.  so that was a great find in and of itself.

i then managed to actually find vintage sheets!  i was twirling my shopping cart in glee up and down the aisles by this point.  the orange/yellow/red print is a pillowcase and is so summery and cheerful.  i'm seeing an adorable dress paired with the matching orange one i also found for mackenzie.  lucky girl...lol.

the blue one pictured above has my fave white trim on the edging.  i love that.  reminds me of my nana.  so pretty and feminine.  not sure if i can bear to cut into this one anytime soon.  it may end up on my bed instead :)

all in all it was a good quick thrift.  there was no potty accidents (happened before), no tantrums (we were close to one but it was averted), i'm not sick (i usually end up sick the next day after shopping there), we remembered to hand sanitize the crap out of ourselves when we got outside and no crazies bothered us in the store.  two thumbs up.  now i've got to get over to my fave haunt next week...i hear some pyrex calling my name.

have any of you been out thrifting lately?  any fave finds?  what do you make the most from vintage sheets?  share...ladies, pics, links to your posts....i wanna see :)

*ps. have you entered for your chance to win patterns from "made" yet?  get your entry in for the giveaway here.

calling all knitters - clicks for babies: period of purple crying caps

it's my party hat (created especially for click for babies)

ok all you knitters out there (or soon to be knitters) i'm interrupting our regularly schedule summer sweater knit along post today to tell you about a project that goes on every year that i think is very special.  it's called "click for babies".  it's a charitable movement to raise awareness about the "period of purple crying".  knitters all over north america whip up adorable purple newborn hats to donate to all the new babies being born in november along with information about this difficult crying phase.
joining in and knitting these cute little hats helps to raise awareness about the period of purple crying and the shaken baby syndrome.  as a parent myself this is such an important topic to educate parents about right from their new babies birth, and it also helps them to understand the normalcy of this type of crying and how to handle the frustration that can accompany it.

in honor of click for babies i thought i would round up some of my fave newborn hat patterns that you can make to donate to this worthwhile cause.  click for babies is asking you knit from "5 to 50 or any number in between of PURPLE colored baby caps using soft baby friendly yarn and send them to the organizers in your state/province."  there are a few guidelines to follow for baby safety and they can be found here under knit.   you can also see my post from last year which includes another roundup of fun hat patterns here.

*as always most of these patterns are on ravelry.com.  you can find me & our "luvinthemommyhood group" on ravelry as well.

1. easy peasy newborn sock hat 2. rosa villosa 3. butterfly hat 4. trendy baby hat

and also preemie hats for charity and lucias organic beanie are good choices as well.

so get those needles out & get clicking.  this is a fun project to do on your own or as part of an online or in person knitting group and most of all - have fun with it :)

you can find a ton of info (including where to mail your hats) on click for babies here and the period of purple crying here.  you can also follow along the click for babies movement on facebook and twitter.  if you know of a friend or family member who is dealing with the period of purple crying please reach out to them and let them know they are not alone.  us moms gotta stick together :)

"Each and every day infants across North America are shaken and abused because the person caring for them became frustrated with their crying. Many times the abuse could have been prevented had the person caring for the infant only known that early infant crying may be normal."

what is your favorite newborn hat to make?  do you have a go to yarn you use for delicate baby skin?  have you dealt with the period of purple crying yourself or with a loved one?  do you have any advice to give for those who are dealing with it? let's chat ladies!

sewing area revamp part three - the chair!

remember a few months ago i finally found my new sewing chair after 2 years of looking for one that would fit underneath the dimensions of my sewing desk?  she was pretty right?  yep.  well, i've been looking since then for a home dec weight fabric that i loved that had some turquoise in it...surprise, surprise right?  well, i couldn't find any that fit what i imagined in my head.  so instead of wallowing any longer and despising the ugly worn fabric on there i decided to throw caution to the wind and add some whimsy to my little sewing wall.

i took my sketch of poppy (my new sewing machine) and headed on over to spoonflower.com to go make my own turquoise fabric. now, one month or so & a sample later i've got my pretty fabric, borrowed a staple gun (that had staples in a turquoise container :P) and recovered my sewing chair!  isn't she pretty?!  well....almost.  i was originally going to keep the wood if i could on the chair but now, after it being recovered and me being almost certain that i'm going to paint the desk white (keep the hardware the same), i think the chair should either be a) grey b) white or c) turquoise.

what do you guys think?  you've helped me with this whole process and i feel like i'm about 3/4 of the way done.  just need to get the hubbies butt in gear painting/sanding my desk.  i mean, it's been 3 years it should be anytime now right????  do you like how the fabric turned out?  if you do you can have some too.  check out my page on spoonflower to get your own - find the link to the fabric here.

did you miss my other sewing area revamp posts?  here they are in case you want to join in.  i could use all the help i can get :)

sewing area revamp part two - blue for me, blue for you

sewing area revamp part one - pick a color, any color!

oh and don't worry.  i prettied up my space a bit...don't think the ironing board monster disappeared on you all.  he got bigger!  say hi monster :)   and yes, my sewing desk is never that clean either.  it's usually covered in thread, bobbins, scissors and an en mass of other thingamajiggers.  i'm sure you all can relate right?  i mean just look at my fabric.  horrible.  i really need to get on organizing that next but i'll save that for another post.

so....what do you guys think?  grey, white or turquoise for the chair?  do you still think the desk should be either all white or white with a colored top?  i'd love to hear your thoughts so come chat!

Summertime, and the Living is Thrifty - The BUFF Cuff Tutorial

Hi everyone! I'm super excited to be guest posting over at "on {the laundry} line" today!  i'm posting as part of the "Summertime, and the Living is Thrifty" series!  I adore Laura, and summer, and thriftiness, and sewing...and....well...just about everything that this fun theme month stands for.  Laura is one of my fave bloggy pals.  She's freakin' hilarious and I love chatting with her.  Also, we're both Canadians who cannot live without coffee and chocolate chip cookies so we've bonded for life...sisters from another mother we are now.  Us Canadian gals gotta stick together eh?  LOL.

When Laura told me about her theme month I knew right away what I was going to make for you all.  I've got bags filled with old yoga pants and even a few old bathing suits of the girls and I'm always looking for new ways to refashion them.  The other day I was out shopping (will not name the store) and spotted this cool running cuff designed to hold your key and some change (maybe a bus ticket or something else small like that) and really wanted it.  This thing cost way more than it should have due to it's "brand" and I thought to myself "girl....you could totally make that...don't buy it - just sew it".  That little cuff stuck in my brain and rattled around in there until Laura emailed me and then "poof" the "BUFF Cuff tutorial" was born.

I set out to sketching out the cuff and the best way to make it and then dug through our refashion pile for a 4 way stretch that was breathable and light and away we went.  I love mine.  It's light, fun, fashionable and for me, while running (ok....my boobs are just way too big to run...I jog..and walk..and jog), I don't like to carry anything and want as little as possible to be strapped on me while pushing my giant running stroller with 2 kids in it and the buff cuff passed the test.  The key stayed in, it didn't irritate me to wear it and I think it looks pretty darn cute!  What do you guys think?  You could embellish, applique, & adorn to your hearts content.  I live for projects that you can take a base and go customize the crap out of it to suit your personality.  So here ya go...get those stretch and knit fabrics out...it's time to get BUFF (in shape...not naked...unless, of course, that's your thing..than go work it girl)!

 - 1/4 yard or less of any fabric that is lightweight, breathable and preferably has 4 way stretch.
 - needle and coordinating thread (optional)
– scissors

||  INSTRUCTIONS  ||

1) Start by measuring your forearm from the start of your wrist to about 2" from your elbow crease (or desired length).  Note: This is the length that your buff cuff will be so if you want to hold something longer than a key extend your length here.  Mark this measurement down as "A".  Do not add any seam allowances unless you want a more finished edge.

2) Measure the width of the widest part of your forearm where the buff cuff will be worn.  Mark this measurement down as "B".  Do not add any seam allowances.

3) Take your "A" and "B" measurements and cut your fabric.  If your fabric doesn't have 4 way stretch make sure your stretch goes from left to right not up and down.

4) Finish the edge of one of the short sides (B) with either a serger or on my machine I used one of the mock overlock stitches for stretch fabrics.  If you don't have a mock overlock stitch you can choose to zig zag stitch this edge as well using the settings for your machine for stretch fabrics.  You can also choose to just leave this unfinished but it is the edge that holds the key and I preferred to have it be a bit tighter of a fit.

5) Sew the long side seam together right sides facing (A) with a 1/4" seam allowance.  I used the zig zag stitch for stretch on my machine for this.  *Note: I did a trial test for a perfect fit by not back stitching at either end and testing out my sizing.  I had to seam rip out the first one as it was too baggy and I'm picky about those things.  You could also pin your side and then try on the cuff as well.  You want the cuff to be very snug but not too hard to stretch over your hand.  Trim your seam allowance as close as you can get to your stitches without cutting them.  You could also serge or mock overlock this as well instead.

6) Try the cuff on with the right side against your skin...so the wrong side facing out.  Fold up the bottom edge the desired amount that you would like your pocket to be noting that you need to be able to nicely fold the rest of the cuff over to fully cover this.  I think mine was about 2 1/4".  Mark where the fold is or pin without injuring yourself of course :)

7) We're going to stitch the pocket down now.  I simply did a few back stitches at the top of the seam of the folded pocket and and at the bottom.  I didn't want to stitch down the whole seam on the side as I thought it would ruin the look of the cuff from the other side.  You could also hand stitch this very easily as well.

8)  I left the other edge that folds over unfinished to keep it soft because I love the cute little roll you get that just makes the edge soft against your skin.  That's it!  Rock the cuff or customize to your heart's content!  I added a bow with my leftovers on to sass it up a bit.  I simply took a long strip, tied it in a bow and then hand stitched it in place. here's how to wear it.  slide the cuff on opened and inside out.  slip the key in your already pre-folded section and then roll down the top:

kaboom!!!!!!!!

Use your leftovers and add a bow to increase your supermomma strength!

moments in the mommyhood - unplugged & a chuckle

Source: etsy.com via joanamc on Pinterest

i'm unplugging from the computer for a bit today to take the kids and get outside.  also, the hubs is home sick today so i've decided to be his nursemaid.  i'm also having one of my "endo" days (for those of you who don't know i suffer from endometriosis) so last night was a not so productive evening on my part for blogging.  it was productive for going to bed a bit early though.

and i mean really, i just needed an exuse to post the above pic of the "ferris bueller's day off" cross stitch pattern!  love it!  danke schön darlings, danke schön.

this shop rocks btw. it's called wee little stitches & i just about peed my pants when i saw her selection - breakfast club, pretty in pink, big bang theory, ghostbusters....awesome!!!  i can't decide which one i love the most.  go check it out if you wanna join me in my crush of all things contemporary cross stitch.  plus she's canadian!  you go girl!

how's your week going?  need a chuckle?  check out this resignation letter from some dude who recently quit whole foods.  the hubs showed it to me last night and i bust a gut laughing.  this guy is priceless.  hope you have a great day! i'll be back tomorrow with our yarn shop hop!  did you get your answers in yet?

sewing with knits mondays - with guest sascha of piccoli piselli

did any of you get sewing on some knits after last week's post?  did you get a chance to whip up anna's racerback tank tutorial or a version of my "poppy top"?  i hope so!  sewing with knits & stretch is so fun!  it's super rewarding, fast and so versatile!  in honor of that i have a guest in the mommyhood today!  the fabulously talented, creative, super mommy of 3 - sascha from the lovely blog "piccoli piselli"!  you my remember sascha from when she guest posted for "comfy sews VS cozy knits" over on versus a few months ago with her pretty "spring wrap belt & bracelet tutorial" ...which, funny enough is also made from some stretch!

sascha is always whipping up gorgeous knits for her kids to wear. how cute are these...

so talented you are my dear!  i love sascha's aesthetic, her fabric choices and how she always keeps her sewing real.  her blog has great tutorials, patterns and lovely snippets of her life with her adorable 3 kids.  sascha is here today with a fun tutorial to show us how to make this adorable dress & tank!  perfect for the summer and perfect for practicing your sewing with knits skills!

now let's hear from sascha...

Hi everyone! Sascha here from Piccoli Piselli. I'm so glad to be back visiting the Mommyhood to share a tutorial that involves knit fabrics! I love sewing with knits because it's actually a very forgiving medium to sew with. If you are new to sewing with knit fabric or if you are an old pro I think this could be just the right project to spice up you Summer sewing.

Yes, that's a little shirring you see there on the shoulder. I thought I'd join in on all the elastic thread fun. I made a few of these for Luca, but I really liked the way they turned out so I may try making some for myself. I'm not much of a one shoulder gal, but don't worry... I'll show you how cute this top looks with two shoulders.

First of all the fabric you choose can be any weight knit fabric. I tried this out with everything from a thinner jersey to a medium interlock. If you are new to knits, interlock can be easier to sew with than jersey which can curl at the edges once cut. I use a rib knit for the neck and arm binding, but you can use other knit fabric for your binding.

Let's get started with your pattern. To make this tank dress/top all you need is an existing tank that fits. I chose a tank top that fits Luca pretty snug. It's more of an undershirt. The reason I have the tank hanging off the edge of the paper is because I wanted to get the top part right before I wasted paper on the length. Make sense? Sorry 'bout that.

The first top that I made from this tracing seemed to go a tad too low under the arm and looked like there was going to be a game of peek-a-boo with Luca's front, so you can see I raised the left side up a bit and added a bit of a swoop.

So here is the version of the dress that the "swoop" was too low so I had to add a spaghetti strap. It turns out this is by far her favorite dress and she's been wearing it a lot! To make a skinny strap from knit fabric you can visit my previous tutorial that I did for the Versus Mag on making skinny straps from knit fabric.

I played around with different widths of the straps and you may want to go wider than the tank you are tracing because the shirring takes out a lot of width. After tracing your pattern you can either make this into a tank top or dress. When making a dress you want to create a A-line from the armpit to the length you want. On the yellow dress I went a little narrower and longer. The floral dress with the tie is a bit wider (not much) and I decided to make the bottom hemline with a curve.

I found that five lines of shirring works pretty good for this style. Mark your lines below the seam allowance and evenly spaced after that. I use a water soluble pen to mark my lines. Using a ball point needle stitch your shirring lines. The right photo shows the shirring once it is sewn. This is actually without spraying any water, which often causes the shirring to gather up real nice and even. I found that most knit fabrics that I used pretty much looked good straight from the machine. I have since washed these dresses a few times and they hold up great.

If you haven't sewn with elastic thread before, don't be intimidated. I hand wind my bobbin and so far so good. Shannon has been making some killer things using elastic thread and she has some good tips.

Once you have shirred the shoulder of the front of one panel, with right sides together stitch shoulder seam closed with either a serger or zig zag stitch.

{here is the shirring on a thinner jersey print knit fabric}

Next you will attach your neck and arm binding. This really isn't as hard as it may seem. It's really up to you what width you cut your binding. I usually use a binding between 1 1/2-2" wide of rib knit. Cutting across the grain or stretch you want to make strips longer than the armhole circumference and neckline circumference. Extra is fine because you will cut the excess off later.

With right side of rib knit facing wrong side of fabric, serge binding onto neckline. Photo shows armhole binding completed and neckline binding just serged into place. I usually don't press my binding in the next step, but I tried it to see if this may help for someone that has not made a knit binding before.  It actually worked nicely and I would recommend this if it is your first time working with knits.

Press or fold binding over double toward right side of fabric and pin in place. To stitch the binding in place you can use either a twin needle (my new favorite thing) or just a regular ball point needle that you have been using for the garment.  If using a single needle make sure to use a long stitch. I use between a 2.8-3.0 on my machine depending on the knit. I test a scrap first to see how it looks.

Here you can see that I did not press the binding, but just double folded it and used pins. You can kind of see from the photo on the left that this is going to be the two shoulder tank.

If making the one shoulder tank at this point you want your armhole and neckline (which is also kind of the armhole) finished with binding. If making a two shoulder tank you want to just finish the armholes and not the neckline yet.

For a single shoulder tank all you need to do is trim the excess length of binding past the seam allowances and with right sides together, serge or zig zag both side seams closed.

Hem tank dress or leave it unfinished. That's one great thing about knit fabric! No raveling! The floral dress has an curved hem line which can be tricky to avoid puckering unless you make the edge very narrow. I serged the bottom and folded the hemline up just the width of the serge line and top stitched with single needle and a wide stitch length. This almost becomes a narrow roll edge. On the yellow dress I used a twin needle and a heftier hemline.

So how about making this cute dress with two shoulders?

{please ignore Little Dude to the left}

The only difference with the two shoulder tank is that you will shirr the two front panels of the tank top pattern you traced. Next, with right sides together stitch closed shoulder seams. Next, attach armhole binding as shown above. Next is where I do things a little different. Without finishing the neckline binding, I stitch closed the side seams (right sides together). Leave tank wrong side out.

Measure the circumference of your neckline and take away about 1/3' - 1/2" depending on the stretch of the binding. Right sides together stitch neck binding closed into a circle. You'll have a headband looking thing.

With right sides of rib binding to wrong side of fabric pin binding into place. There should be a little bit of stretching of the neckline binding, not the neckline of the tank.

Stitch or serge the binding into place stretching the binding evenly as it is being attached to the garment. It may seem awkward, but you want to stretch the rib knit while not stretching the garment body fabric. Like I said before, knit fabric is pretty forgiving and you will surprised at how this comes together, especially after a trip to the laundry.

Finish neckline binding as you did for the armhole above. For the hemline I finished the heart dress the same as the floral.

I love the possibilities with this dress. Did you see the racer back tank that Anna from Noodlehead did last week? I'm thinking this could be pretty cute as a shirred racerback tank dress! Let me know if you give it a try or if you have any questions about sewing with knits. I am certainly no expert, but I kind of dove blindly into the knit fabric arena (no pun intended to those of you who already read my blog you know that I have a blind son and I rarely spare the jokes) and you know what? I am loving it... um, both sewing with knits and having a blind child!

thanks so much sascha!!! so adorable and i learned a few tips too!  you can find more of sascha's sewing adventures on her blog "piccoli piselli".

also make sure you pop on over to noodlehead today to check out anna's super talented guest jess from craftiness is not optional.  she's got a cute tutorial for a "flora and fauna shirt". happy sewing ladies!

p.s. don't forget to sport our button (on the sidebar) if you want to join in on the fun we'd love to hear from you as well!  comment below...i'd love to see what you are all working on!

to find some time do some thrifting, i'm having serious withdrawl...

to take full advantage of the current starbucks promotion...oh yeah :P...

that the hubs kicks butt at his baseball tourney this weekend...

Source: elenis.com via Diane on Pinterest

yippee! it's the weekend!  we've got a busy one planned, mostly for the hubs.  he's got a baseball tournament going on and we all get to go to a team bbq as well.  it's gonna be a baseball filled weekend!  hopefully his team will win.  i will admit that my wish for him to win is partly selfish..lol, firstly, i'm not so mean that i don't want his team to win, because i really do, but also so that he finishes his tournament on time so i can still go to knit night...haha.  i know, i know....knit night, but it's my only "me time" for the week and i missed last week and am seriously needing a little girl time.

i'm also almost done my tutorial for sewing with knits week! can't wait to show you guys! i hope you like it!  i'm also planning on doing some more sewing (loving the new machine with stretch fabrics!) and of course, get some mileage put on my KAL project.  mixed in with that is going to be some wine sipping (a wee bit for me), yummy food, cuddles with my little fam, and hopefully if the weather cooperates some time to take the girls out on their bikes to get me and the hubs some starbucks! surprise surprise!!

what are your weekend wishes ladies?  happy anniversary to all of you who were celebrating these few days & thanks for all your wishes for me too!  so sweet you all are!  what are you up to this weekend?  any fun plans?  any projects you're working on?  chat away :)

moments in the mommyhood - slacker...well sort of...

i'm slacking today.  yesterday was my anniversary with the hubs so i didn't spend all night on the computer...well, ok, i did spend most of it, but not as much as normal.  so this is a bit of a slacker post that i couldn't resist doing because last night at like 10:00pm i found the above awesome of awesome pic on pinterest and could not wait until friday to post it.  i seriously need this blown up on my wall.  i love it that much.  i'm sick like that, i know.  but almost everyday i feel as though i need a starbucks iv and have said it on many occasions on here so i only thought it fitting to share it with all of you.

i also haven't been sleeping well this week.  not due to the kids, they have been sleeping better, but due to my own little brain.  i'm sure a lot of you can relate, especially creative types.  i'm having a hard time calming down my little noggin because i'm feeling so crafty at the moment.  it's the new machine.  it's so nice to sew on i want to sew even more than ever before and the ideas they keep a coming but this momma can't make them.  not enough time in the day.  but those ideas?  they don't leave me alone.  it's like they fester until i get them done.  i even write down ideas in the middle of the night.  any of you do that too?

i've also been having nightmares :(  yes....i'm a loser.  the scary movie i watched the other day (insidious) is seriously still freaking me out.  can this even be possible?  i had nightmares all night last night.....really bad sleep and couldn't bring myself to turn the tv off cause i was so eeby jeebied..lol.  i think i have too much of an overactive imagination and i also fall into that 1% category from the print above...haha.  i think i seriously need to A) stop watching horror movies and B) think about the feng shui in my bedroom.  i'm not really into feng shui, but hey, if it's gonna help me not freak out like a little baby every night i'm willing to give it a try.

on a happier note wanna see some of my fave pics from my wedding 3 years ago? i love seeing other peoples...i'm nosy like that..haha.  in case anyone is interested we got married in tofino, bc on mackenzie beach. yep.  cheese factor with the mackenzie beach part but we just couldn't help ourselves we love that beach.  it was such a gorgeous day and even though the pics look rainy, it wasn't.  the sun had been shining and a gorgeous mist had rolled onto the beach.  perfect day.

look how tiny mackenzie was?  Awww....

oh, and our anniversary, well mackenzie closed all the drapes all over our condo and insisted we set the table, candles, wine glasses and all and put on romantic music.  she picked out my clothes (she even attempted to choose my bra and underwear which i of course told her was taking it just one step too far), told me how to do my hair and then dressed her and harper.  it was the cutest thing when the hubs walked in the door with flowers and there we all were...i had a good chuckle, oh and the hubs scored major points for the flowers :)

how has your week been?  sleeping or not sleeping?  any of you going to join me and gynnab (fb pal) for some starbucks iv?  c'mon...you know you wanna....lol.

summer sweater knit along - the needles are on fire!

yes, i am that loser who poses like this :P
the needles are on fire ladies!  well, not really on fire, but hot anyways!  i got a fair bit of knitting done (for me anyways) on my summer sweater knit along project being sick and stuck in bed and i thought i would show you some pics of my progress.  not bad right?  i adore the color and the sizing is good...i think..lol.  you see, another reason my needles are hot, hot, hot are that the lovely and oh so sweet jane richmond, who i have the absolute pleasure of being friends with, lent me her knit pick interchangeables to use!!!!!!!!!  can we say cowabunga!!!  my knitting speed improved ten fold...not kidding.  what a difference.  huge thank you to jane!!!

Ohhhhhhh, does it match my eyes....lol!
i've been planning on buying my own set of interchangeables this year and i am now officially sold on the knit pick interchangeables (nickel) set and hope to order mine at the end of the month.  i asked around a lot and got info from a ton of helpful people about what their fave interchangeable set was and knit picks was the top "affordable" line to go with.  i heard a lot of mention of the addi turbos but i can't afford those so i didn't even look at them.

pattern: effortless cardigan by hannah fettig
yarn:  berroco vintage dk in color 2194

i tortured the hubs and made him take more pics of me again..the poor guy, two times in one week!  he hates doing it & we really don't see eye to eye when it comes to photographing me.  i wish i could easily tell him what i visualize in my head but no matter what i do we just butt heads..lol.  oh well, these will at least show ya what the sweater is looking like so far.

me smiling when really i am hissing to him "just take the mother f'in picture" as he kept taking close up shots of my cleavage...ahhhh men.  gotta love them!
you can't really tell how nicely the front is draping cause the length of the needle isn't long enough for me to fully let it go.  i'm saving that for knit night when i can use jane's super fab extender (yes, knit picks rocks like that) and i can fully put it on.  i could have put it on some spare yarn but i didn't cause i'm lazy like that :P  and no, that's not some random pulled yarn sticking out of my sweater, i'm also just one of those weird people who doesn't have stitch markers and uses bits of yarn here and there.  i know, so boring of me right?  i think i really need to up my knitting accessory stash.  my sewing one way outnumbers my knitting one now and i think my knitting accessories need some excitement in their lives :P

for those of you who may not know what circular interchangeables are they are simply a set of needle tips that come with different length "cords" that you twist on to your tips.  the fun thing is you can get all sorts of accessories and can add cords to the one you are using to make it long enough to always fully try on your garment.  they are fast to knit with, smooth and so light! i still can't get over them!  i cannot wait to get a set of my own.  i swear i have been dreaming about them at night....sad, but true.

are you wishing for a set of interchangeables?  what's your fave brand and style to use?  what do you knit with that sets your needles on fire?  how's your KAL project coming along ladies? and don't forget to get your answers in for our "yarn shop hop" & tell your friends too!  i decided to extend it for another week.

sewing 911 - the quilt is back baby (and a little review)!

now that polly the pfaff is home with her new momma harper's quilt can finally get finished!  i had my first lesson on polly this weekend at sawyer's and it was great!  i feel way less intimidated by all it's fancy schmancy features and a lot of the things i've been frightened of, namely buttonholes, have been conquered!  i cannot wait to make something with buttonholes now!  next lesson - zippers!  i cannot wait.

i don't feel ready to give you all a full review of the pfaff ambition 1.0 yet (i haven't sewn enough on her yet) but what i can say so far is that i have never loved an inanimate object sooo much and that's saying a lot cause my camera and dyson vacuum are a close 2nd and 3rd.  there is something about saving, dreaming and wishing for an item for so long and then when you finally get it....sheer bliss!  i've waited 2 years for this sewing machine so i'm in my honeymoon phase with her.  she sews smooth as butter, is so quiet it amazes me constantly, the stitches are gorgeous, she powers through more layers than i have ever been able to sew without a skip or jump, and the features are just...well....wowsa!  i'm a very satisfied customer at the moment and would already highly recommend this machine to anyone looking for a great powerhouse with all the bells and whistles for everyday sewing, layers, quilting and embroidery...you name it, polly does it!

back back to the quilt.  for those of you who haven't seen the quilt i'm working on for harper this is it.  you can also see my other posts on her quilt here and here and i used this tutorial.  i've decided to go with a red cotton back.  i'm still stumped on what to do for the binding though.  i don't have any left of the "it's a hoot" line by momo from moda that i love so would have to reorder to do that and i don't really want to...lol...i'm lazy that way.  i've thought about not doing a binding and just using bias tape or doing rae's method without it.  what do you guys think?  i could use some help with this.

i'm also stuck on the quilting still.  i'm drawn to the idea of quilting the rectangle shape inside each box about 1\4" in from the seams.  i thought that may look pretty.  i love the look of quilts with the lines done all over but think that may be way too busy of a look with all the pattern going on that i used.  i like the simplicity of it right now and don't want to busy it up too much but don't want to just  and don't want to knot it.  any thoughts on this too ladies?  any comments are always appreciated :)

i'm also extremely stumped on the color of the thread i'm quilting with.  i like the idea of the back having some quilting on it so it's not just plain red but am worried that a white thread (which i would probably want to use on the front)  would look ugly on the back.  what color would you use for the bobbin thread to add some pizzaz to it without it looking garish?  phew that's a lot of questions for you all...but i need another pair of eyes.  i've got the scraps of the fabric line i used (the first pic in this post) and was also thinking about doing something fun with those on the back but i'll leave that as a surprise :)

i started working on this quilt when she was a baby so i'm dying for it to be done.  i stare at it all the time wishing we could snugggle up with it already.  i knew i was going to get the new sewing machine so i decided not to even attempt quilting it with my old demon one and to hold off until polly got home.  i know it's going to be so much fun to try on the new machine.

are any of you working on a quilt right now?  do you have any tips and suggestions to give me to help a girl out?  i always learn so much from you guys when we chat quilting.   it's so fun!  i'd love to see what you are all working on so comment below!

whooeeee, i've been keeping something a secret from you all!  one of my fave blogging buddies anna, from the isanely awesome blog noodlehead (that is so fab it needs no intro from me) and i have been scheming a little mini theme month!  yep, that's right!  i know how you all love a good theme month.  so from now & for the next 3 mondays you'll get fun posts all on conquering your fears of sewing with stretch & knits on both luvinthemommyhood & on noodlehead!

woot woot! there will be guest tutorials, roundups and giveaways all in the hopes that you guys join in with us and do some sewing with knits & stretch.  that comfy, soft, lovely, stretchy goodness that feels good to wear and that can be easier to sew with than you think.

and to start the ball rolling here's a top that i recently made that was inspired by the shirt i wore in this post and also by dana's pattern "the summer vacation dress & shortie".   once i was finished with it the top also reminds me of a stretch love child of rae's (made by rae) spring ruffle top tutorial.  also please excuse how i look as i've been ill since thursday night with some kind of bug. yuck & no fun, and also it's pouring rain outside and the kiddos were crying & i was stressed trying to get the hubs to take the pics i wanted..lol...moving on.  but the shirt...yes please.  super comfy and looks great with wide leg jeans, skinny jeans, leggings and even your fave yoga pants.  i think this top is flattering on most body shapes and hides a whole whack load of sins..which, yes, includes the baggage my 2 babies left behind.  darn those 15 extra pounds!

the fabric is a bit of a more thick weight stretch that i found sturdy and not too thin that it showed things i didn't want shown..lol.  i love the cream color for a nice base for all seasons to dress with scarves, sweaters, or in the summer - just a simple accessory.

i didn't get a chance to do a full tutorial for this one but here's a really basic outline of what i did:

i measured the length i wanted the shirt to be starting from the neckline to the bottom of the top taking into account the shirring and that the size of my "girls" would shorten the length in the front.  i then simply folded my fabric in half and marked the desired length adding a 1/2" seam allowance and cut.  i then cut that in half to give myself a back and front.  i took my front piece and folded over and stitched a 1/4" hem for the neckline and then shirred 6 rows with elastic thread.  for my back i did the same (the hem) and then only shirred 3 rows.  now on mine i wanted my back lower than my front so i did some tricky maneuvering that i wing dinged with my straps (if anyone wants more detail of this or a sketch to show what i did let me know & i'll post something for you guys).

in hindsight i should have angled the top corners of the top but because i was going for the simplest top to sew so i didn't and instead angled my straps.  i knew i wanted the straps to join on the sides of the front of the top instead of the top of the neckline so i traced out the angle of the sides to the back and replicated that on the bottom of my strap.  for the strap i simply measured how long i wanted it taking into account the shrinkage from shirring and doubled the width i wanted it to be.  cut out your fabric and fold in half, wrong sides facing out.  sew down the straight short end and the long end leaving the angled end open.  pull your strap right side out.  i did 3 rows of elastic thread on the edge of the strap that has the longest point that matches up to the side of the neckline of the top.

match up your front and back of the top right sides facing each other and sew down your sides remembering that you want your back lower than your front.  trim the bottom of the top to even it out.  i left mine unsewn cause i roll that way..lol.  i like that little roll that it does plus the bonus with knits is they don't fray!  so no worries if you don't want to use a serger or zig zag your seams.  you can if you want the insides to look all pretty though :)

then i simply placed the straps where they matched up with the indents on the sides of the front of the top and stitched them in place and then pinned down the back ones and tried the shirt on making sure the length & placement was right.  stitch that down too. you're done!  that's it!  easy right?!    i hope the mini tute makes sense...i'm pretty sleepy this morning after watching "insidious" like an idiot last night and scaring the crap out of myself so bad i couldn't sleep and had nightmares like a real champ all night.  smart shannon, real smart. i don't recommend that flick to anyone who scares easily, i usually like horror movies but this one really got me bad. never watching it again..lol.

some tips of mine to remember when sewing with knits:

- always use a new needle for every new project.  make sure you are using the correct needle for the type of fabric you have.  a lot of people suggest using a ball point needle when sewing with knits.
- double check your tension and stitch length on a test strip of your fabric to get the best look.
- don't pull or stretch your fabric as you sew.  it's natural to pull it a bit but don't stretch it way out or you'll get an ugly finish.
- remember to give elastic thread a try!  it's super duper fun!  and oh so easy once you get the hang of it!  for those of you who mentioned your machine wouldn't feed the elastic thread through your bobbin my sewing instructor (from sawyer's sewing centre) taught me a neat trick on the weekend (i'm taking some free lessons to learn how to use my new sewing machine) that you can use a cording foot and pull the elastic thread & hold it taut yourself to get the right amount of stretch and simply zig zag over it.  thanks wille!

and there's more tips to come but in the meantime if you want more helpful info when sewing with knits check out this roundup i did called "sewing with knits: tips & tricks roundup"!

moments in the mommyhood - oh barbie, you're so crafty!

we had a barbie marathon in our house yesterday.  the house was out, the car, the clothes galore and as we were playing with our dolls i had so many flashbacks to when i played barbies.  each time i pulled out another outfit i remembered how much i had treasured each one.  why?  because most of my barbies rockin' outfits were handmade by my mom and my nana.  lovingly stitched, knitted and crocheted to up the style factor for my barbies.

I would so totally wear this!
it was so much fun to go through all the goodies my mom recently brought that she had saved for the girls.  i know barbie gets a bad rap most of the time but honestly, i only have the fondest memories of playing with mine.  hours and hours spent styling their hair and their outfits.  mackenzie has been bit by the same bug.  we had so much fun picking out the outfits for our little barbie photoshoot to share with you today.  she was also in charge of the hairstyles and arrangement of outfits. so take a peek and see what barbie's wearing this week!

So adorable!!
I want this outfit for myself!!
Gotta have jeans & a classic scarf!
Not sure if this one was handmade but it was one of my faves as a little girl!
Which barbie collection is complete without a bridal ensemble!
I love the detail work on the veil, dress and even the bouquet!
How trendy is this!
Every girl needs some lingerie!
and some fancy robes!
Clothes to relax in...
clothes to stay cozy in...

and clothes to stay glamorous in!
This one cracks me up!
Accessories to play with!
Can't forget barbies bathing suits!
Even barbie can rock a track suit!
The retro green dress was one of my fave to dress barbie in and I just about died when I found this sun hat & matching ensemble!  What a cool way to make a hat!
so there you have it!  our picks for this season for our barbies!  fun right?!  i love it!  i totally lmao while doing this and if i had had my way i would have done a full on posed barbie shoot but i think the hubs and you guys would have thought i had gone off the deep end....but seriously, it was sooo hard to resist...barbie was such a great model...so easy to pose and take pics of...lol.  so thank you to my mom, nana and the other talented women my mom may have bought these off of at a bazaar, i appreciate and cherish every single item!  so fab!

do you have handmade outfits for your barbies that you adore?  do you have fun dressing them up with your kids?  c'mon...fess up....i'm not alone am i?????
