moments in the mommyhood - i heart the snail mail

one thing some of you may know about me is that i love mail.  real mail.  snail mail.  post office mail.  don't get me wrong...i love getting emails to my inbox too but there is something so exciting and invigorating about getting surprise packages or awaiting a goodie that's coming your way.  even my kids get involved in the excitement.  we look forward to checking our mailbox everyday.  yes, even when it's only a few times a year that packages come...we still like that "ya never know" vibe about mail :)  it always brings a giant smile to my face..unless of course it's a bill.  those can stay somewhere else..lol.

the other day an awesome, awesome, awesome pressie came in the mail from my lovely bloggy pal lindsay of the "the cottage home".  i heart lindsay.  she knows me so well.  i was doing jumps and squeals all over the house when i opened this puppy up.  i mean seriously!  how could a person not get excited when a package containing a sarah london book, lotta jansdotter fabric, an adorable TURQUOISE needle case, fabulous trims, fabric from ellen luckett baker's (of the long thread) new line, the most adorable sized charm pack from aneela hoey "walk in the woods" line...and see that melody miller fabric..i've been lusting after those prints for ages!  i need to cover my house in the dish one!  LOVE IT!  i can hardly contain myself just typing about it all....i'm drooling everywhere looking at my own pics.  i think i need to get out more...but anyhoo...it made my month.  you rock lindsay!  i luv ya to bits! thank you soooo much! i cannot WAIT to be able to sew again and use all these lovely, inspiring goodies!  wanna see?

i love how this shot makes the fabric look like puzzle pieces!!

besides acting like complete dorks when the mail person comes we've also been enjoying our xmas tree...dressed up with some vintage sheet goodness - don't worry, i couldn't bear to cut into that lovely sheet, i simply wrapped it around the tree.  we're low maintenance like that around here.  that's how we roll peeps.

and what's that on our tv??? that's right...the holiday fireplace.  we are the losers who put the holiday fireplace on tv when we actually have a fireplace.  hahaha...i know...weird right?  but i love watching it on the tv and the sound....delicious.  i get all warm and toasty just thinking about it.  i will also admit to being hopelessly addicted to watching for "the arm".  you all know what i'm talking about..at least the people who live where you can watch holiday fireplace...the arm that comes out once in a blue moon to stoke, poke and put wood on the fire.  it's a thrill i tell ya.  we all hoot and holler in our house whenever it happens.  the kids love it. in fact i took a pic of it just to prove what a loser i really am...lol and that the arm does in fact exist and he's wearing plaid this year!  i imagine a handsome, rugged hottie behind that arm...just lounging there with a cup of hot cocoa with my name on it :P

we also are attempting to up the dork factor even more by wearing these wayyyyy too much around the house..especially me.  and no, i will not show you a pic of me wearing mine...lol.

i've got some holiday crafts in the works to show you all next week, another fab giveaway as well as a fun guest post on saturday from me!  so stay tuned ladies!  so...tell me...what have you been up to this week?  are you "dorking" it up for the holidays?  am i alone in this?  are you a closet mail lover?  anyone else crushing on surprise packages as much as me?  chat it up girls! you know i love hearing from you :)

christmas knitting 911 - the infamous search for time management

clock cozy by sarahsthreads (pattern by retrobaby)
time.  it goes by way too quickly....especially when you're excited and planning all sorts of awesome gifts to give to friends and family.  you start out all gung ho and slowly burn out.  you start cancelling projects or switching to others till you end up regretting the earlier joy you had when feeling all inspired and full of inspired energy.  does this happen to you at christmas time?  it's happened to me before.  i'm not gonna lie :P  it's pretty easy to want to make handmade gifts for everyone in your life but the actual act of making all of them seldom becomes reality.  life gets in the way.  and if you do get them all done i want to hear from you.  how do you do it?  did you start in january? what's your secret?

all kidding aside i haven't given up hope on handmade gift giving and my infamous search for time management when it comes to christmas crafting.  i happen to enjoy the planning, the choosing of the yarn, the knitting and that bit of stress/deadline.  it gets me all revved up to knit more than i will the whole year.  but last year that wasn't the case.  i took on way too much, a bigger bite than i could chew and it ended up biting me in the a**.  it was pretty stressful and not fun stressful.  i honestly think it took the joy out of the making for me which is pretty hard to do to this die hard crafter.  i decided to switch things up this year.

saved by the bell pattern by samantha wilson
i decided to only make handmade gifts for those who requested an item or who i knew would absolutely LOVE what i made.  i decided that all the heart and soul that goes into each gift i make just wasn't worth expending if the gift wasn't going to be well received.  i've learned my lessons over the last few years and that's why i only give gifts with "knitterella" tags on them..hahaha - love them!  but i digress...i started my list a bit earlier than last year, purchased my patterns and yarn ahead of time and then told myself i wouldn't fully start crafting them until december 1st.  i know...nuts right?

i felt like if i started them earlier in the fall i would start to resent having to make them.  that may not make sense to all of you but the best thing i can say is that i make things for people all year.  pressies for my girls, gifts for other people and their kids for bdays and other occasions. only just recently have i started selfish knitting and sewing.  i am soooo addicted.  man does it feel nice to do something to treat myself.  it feels really good.  as a busy mom and wife i feel like spoiling myself with doing something i love that is just for me in the end is perfectly a-ok.  i don't think women in general do enough of it.  i thank my pal jane for that.  she taught me how to truly and fully enjoy knitting beyond what i have in the whole  24+ years that i've been knitting/crocheting.

in order to squeeze the selfish knitting/sewing in i decided that i would start a few projects just for me in the summer/fall and work on them until december 1st.  i made sure the list i had set out to make for december would be doable in the time frame i had given myself.  that's the trick folks...right there.  make sure you have the actual time to finish these projects...not your dream time.  all too often we think we will have tons of time but in reality things take a lot longer and that's when the stress comes in.  other obligations can get in the way.   make sure the projects you choose are realistic and are something you truly would love to make for that person.  i have suffered through knitting gifts in the past and drolled through it dreading every minute.  trust me...that is not the way to spend the xmas holiday crafting time.  boring.

i chose to make only 3 knitted gifts this year.  last year i did way more.  i didn't get them all done on time....it still bothers me..lol.  this is what and how i'm doing it this year...

i chose one time consuming gift - deirdre by linden down for someone in my family who will remain unnamed....and the yarn....wowsa, i love what i picked out....i am super excited to give it to them.  i so enjoyed making this shawl right from the start and am happy to say i bound off last night!  woot woot!  project one soon to be crossed off the list. i will admit i started this one weeks ago but only did a few rows and then put it aside for december 1st.

then i chose two faster gifts.  two hats.  one by wooly wormhead - the ql slouch (above), for my sister in law who so sweetly asked me for as many handmade goodies as i could manage.  i splurged on the yarn and can't wait to cast this beauty on!  it's going to look so pretty on her!

and the second hat is joe by jane richmond for my hubby who picked this hat out himself and who repeatedly asked me for a new hat all year. i also may throw in two mug hugs for mackenzie's teachers.

in between all my xmas crafting i reward myself with working on my lingering two selfish mommy gifts..lol.  i've got audrey on the needles and the classic raglan pullover in the works as well.  i would love to have both done by xmas but that prolly will not happen.  i am not superwoman...but one...hmmmm...one of them may be doable.  but we'll see.  i keep dreaming of wearing my red audrey over the holidays.  but i did get 2 hats and 3 cowls done for myself and 1 cowl for my daughter before december so i'm pretty happy.  that includes the north wind hat by felicia lo of sweet georgia yarns (above) and shannon by jane richmond (below).  i've been wearing them all rotating them daily.  i've never done that before and i have to say i'm loving it!  you can find all my projects and things i have on the go here on my ravelry page.

so far for now i've been enjoying the late nights in front of the fire with a favorite movie on, curled up on the couch with hot chocolate (that may or may not have some yummy liqueur in it...shhhhh.) when my whole family is in bed sleeping while i am knitting away...but hey...that's not every ones cup of tea.  how can you get it all done this year too?  time block.  that's my secret weapon and it is all year.  i time block projects and crafts out.  i schedule what project i am going to work on in what priority order and do multiple things in a day/evening.

here's an example of my day right now:

7:00am: breakfast with kids
8:00am: blogging/emailing/social media time mixed in with playing, diaper changing, snack making, coffee sipping and any other motherly duties i may have.
10:00am: knitting (project 1) while daughter and i have some one on one time while youngest naps.
12:00pm: lunch making.
12:30pm: knitting (project 2)/hand sewing while kiddos eat lunch along with blog tasks/emails/social media
1:00pm: playtime with kids
3:00pm:  downtime for kids and mommy knits/hand sews again with inbox cleanup.
4:00pm: dinner prep/chores etc
5:00-6:30pm: time with family/dinner/bath
6:30-8:30pm: kids ready for bed/stories/cleanup/mixed in with blogging for tomorrow's post
8:30 - 9:45pm: blogging
9:45 - 10:45pm: knitting
10:45pm - i'm sleepy: selfish knitting and/or hand stitching binding on harper's quilt.

phew...lol.  now listen...this is just what i strive for.  there are play dates, appointments, school and other things mixed in there as well.  it doesn't always go as planned but for now it seems to be working.  i carry my knitting around with me and whip it out in the car or anywhere else i deem safe to knit.   my knit nights on saturdays sure don't hurt either because i get from 7-11 of straight knitting done.  it's fabulous.  also due to my back injury i can't sew right now so usually i would have time blocked in for sewing.  normally if i have to do daytime sewing i would do it while the kids eat lunch.  i would then sew again at night in the 9:45-10:45time block and then knit after i'm done blogging till bedtime.  i've had to lose a lot of gifts i was planning on making for others that were sewn and had to just mit defeat on that one.  it's been hard but i try to make every minute count and also make them enjoyable at the same time.  some people may think when do you have downtime but honestly the knitting is so relaxing that it is my downtime and blogging is also my passion so it's all fun in the end.  my hubby is also not home at night when the kids go to bed so it's free time for this momma to get her blogging/craft on :P

so....what do you all do to stay on top of your projects?  are you a very late knit knitter?  a weekend uber knitter? an early bird knitter?  an i started working on them in the spring kind of knitter?  i want to know your tips and tricks on how we can all help each other in the search for time maintenance when it comes to making it through this holiday crafting time without too much stress or grief.  share...my dears....share...i'm dying to know how you guys try to "do it all" :)

also.....do you want win a new cowl? don't have the time to do selfish knitting yourself?  head on over to "nook" to enter to win a pretty begbie cowl just for you!

let's hear from jessica...

Hello Luvinthemommyhood readers! I am Jessica from Me Sew Crazy, and I am honored to be here. I think Shannon is one of the sweetest, happiest, and juts downright cutest bloggers I know. When she asked me if I wanted to be a guest on her site, I jumped at the chance!

You see, Shannon has this thing for sewing with knits. She has been so fabulous to teach the blog community and sewists worldwide just how easy it can be, that knits don't have to be 'scary'. She is one of the reasons I picked up the textile in the first place, helping me to conquer my knit fears, and now it is one of my favorite fabrics to work with!!!

With that in mind, I had the perfect dress to showcase for her site...

I have had visions of this oh so comfy knit Christmas dress for over a month now, and Shannon gave me the nudge I needed to complete it! I am so thankful she did too, because I am absolutely in love with how it turned out. It fits like a dream, the ruffles are nice and understated, and my daughter can still run around in it and be a kid!

To make this dress you will need:
  • 1 yard of knit fabric (I like to use a heavier weight interlock knit, as it is typically easier to sew and is better for the colder weather)
  • Basic sewing essentials -thread, scissors, sewing machine (ball point needle when sewing knits)
  • Old T Shirt that fits great for pattern purposes (not too loose, not too tight)
Let's Get Started:

First of all, you will need to determine which direction your knit fabric stretches. Take your fabric and stretch it from left to right, and again from up to down. Interlock knit generally only stretches in one direction. We will want to BE SURE to cut our pattern pieces out with the stretch going from left to right, or widthwise.

Using an old shirt as your pattern piece, lay it out on the fold on top of your knit fabric which is also on the fold. Cut around the top of your shirt, stopping approximately halfway down your shirt. Cut (2) 0f these, one for the Front Bodice and one for the Back.

Alter the neckline on the Front Bodice pattern piece to match your T Shirt, or slightly lower if preferred.

Cut out your sleeves, using the top of the sleeve as your fold line. I wanted my dress to actually be long sleeved, but made an error when cutting the fabric - so 3/4 sleeve it is! But you can make it any sleeve length you want, including sleeveless!

Using your 2 bodice pieces, measure the entire length of the neckline, and cut out a piece of knit fabric that is that length x 2"W. This will be for your Bias Tape Trim. (Be sure your stretch is lengthwise for this piece.)

For your bodice ruffles, cut (4) pieces of fabric that are the same width as your bodice x 3"L.

Lastly, we need to cut our skirt. Depending on how full you want the skirt of your dress to be, that will determine your skirt Width. As you can see, my skirt is not very full for this dress. My skirt is 20"W. The length of your skirt is completely up to you!

I also decided to put a couple of ruffles on the bottom of the skirt, but this is of course optional. To make the ruffles you will need (4) strips of fabric the same Width as your skirt x 4"L.

Let's Start Sewing!!! First we will finish off the bottom hem on all of our ruffles. For this understated ruffle look, I simply put a lettuce edge hem on each ruffle. To do this, set your sewing machine on zig zag stitch and sew the bottom raw edge of each Ruffle. Pulling on the fabric as it is going through the machine will give you the wavy edge, the more you pull = the wavier the hem.

Take your first bodice Ruffle piece and place it right sides together on top of your Front Bodice. The lettuce hem edge will be on top, and the raw bottom edge will be down. Pin the raw bottom edge to the Bodice, I like to start mine around 1" up from the bottom of the armhole. Sew a zig zag stitch over the raw edge securing the ruffle to the shirt.

Press the top ruffle down, covering up your zig zag stitches. Sew a line of edge stitches over the top of the Ruffle.

We are going to now sew each subsequent ruffle underneath your first ruffle, securing the top edge with a zig zag stitch. There is no need to flip the ruffle down as long as you sew the top raw edge underneath the previous Ruffle.

You will have your Front Ruffled bodice when finished. I like the last bottom ruffle to slightly overhang the bodice's bottom raw edge.

Sew the Ruffles on the bottom of your skirt, being sure to mark them exactly the same on the front and the back skirt pieces. Unlike the bodice, for the skirt the bottom skirt's hem is showing, as I will simply lettuce edge that later so that the skirt itself becomes the final 'ruffle'.

Sew a line of gathering stitches along the top edge of each skirt piece. Gather stitches until the top of your skirt is the same width as your bodice.

Pin the bottom of your bodice to the top of your skirt, right sides together, and sew. When doing this for the front of your bodice, be sure your bottom Ruffle is pressed up so that you do not sew it into your skirt.

Press the seam upwards and edge stitch. Repeat for the back bodice and skirt.

You will now have your main Front and Back dress pieces.

Place right sides together and pin both shoulder seams. Sew.

Taking your sleeve, pin the shoulder arc of the sleeve to your shoulder of your dress body, right sides together. Sew and repeat for other sleeve.

You will now have something that looks like this. I like to hem the bottom of my sleeves at this point. Turning the fabric under towards the wrong side and pressing then sewing, either by using a long straight stitch or zig zag stitch.

Fold your dress right sides together, matching up your seams. Pin the sleeve and side seams and sew. Repeat for other side.

We are almost finished! I like to hem the bottom of the dress first, as it is easier. Of course you can go with a traditional hem if you prefer...but we did all of those wonderful Lettuce edges on the Ruffles, why not lettuce edge the hem as well? You remember what to do? Set your machine to zig zag stitch, and gently pull on your dress as the hem goes through the machine, with the stitch going over the raw edge.

Lastly, all we need to do is finished off the neckline. I did not take pictures of this part, as I happen to always refer to a fabulous tutorial by ikat bag whenever binding with knits, which can be found HERE. (I have tried tons of different binding methods, and this is by far my favorite!)

So remember the strip we cut out for our neckline bias tape? First sew that together at the short edge, creating a circle. The circle should be the exact same size as your neckline. Double check now, just in case you need to alter it a bit! Attach your bias knit trim to your neckline using your preferred method - and voila! You are finished!

You now have a super cute, super comfy understated ruffle knit dress for your little one - that can be worn all year round!

As you can see, we made ours for Christmas...do you think she is getting excited or what?!! Lol

Thank you so much for having me Shannon. I am so happy you gave me the opportunity to be here, as well as the incentive to complete this dress! My daughter absolutely loves it.

.

i'm so looking forward to this weekend.  last weekend the hubs was gone so no rest happened for this momma. i'm taking full advantage of having a few hours to myself tomorrow morning.  peaceful bliss.  i'm going to sit my butt down and not move. i want to just sit and lap up the quiet & the sunshine, filling my soul with a sense of calm.  enough to last me another 8 days till the next dose.

we've been getting by here but it's been rough...i won't lie.  you guys know i won't candy coat things here.  it's pretty hard to take care of 2 little ones when you can't move too much...or bend...or lift...or twist...lol.  but i'm trying to stay strong and remember that this too shall pass.  there's a reason for every hardship and i hope that soon that will be made clear to our little family.  we're looking forward to having daddy home for a few restful days this month for the holidays where we don't have to worry too much about chores, deadlines, work, homework, stress, and well...life.  we want to snuggle, laugh, bask by the fire, sip hot cocoa, eat cookies, stay in our jammies all day and just enjoy each other's company.  it's been a long time and i think this year instead of counting down the days till santa comes i'm counting down the days until we can be a "family".

time seems to go by too fast lately and even though in a way i wish it would speed up so my back would be better i also wish it would just snail along.  i want to enjoy this last month.  the morning frost glittering from the morning sunlight, the sip of hazelnut coffee, the kiss of a toddler and hug of a child, the laughter of my best friend, the feel of my knitting needles and the stitches of my quilt, the beauty in simplicity, the blessings we have in our life and the belief  that through all of this, life has a way of working itself out.  i remind myself of this daily right now.  everything will be ok....it will be ok.  i will be ok.

wishing you a blessing filled weekend.  one filled with pieces of bliss and happiness, of warm snuggles, hot drinks, the joy in handmade, the comfort of good friends and the love of your family.  thank you all for your kind words and emails the last few months as i've been "under the weather".  i luv you guys.  so.....where will you be finding the beauty in simplicity this weekend?

christmas knitting 911 - the Mallory Cowl Pattern

Pattern: The Mallory Cowl (Child Version and Adult Version)
Yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers in colorway 9322

what's this another cowl? yep, it's a cowl..lol.  what can i say?  how could i deny the loving request of my 4 1/2 year old daughter?  she saw me enjoying my many new cowls and begged to have one just for her.  so i thought i would use a skein of cascade 220 heathers that i had in my stash and whip her up a super cozy turquoise cowl!

with yarn  held double you get a squishy, yummy warm cowl.  something fun for them to put on that's big enough to keep them warm but not too big that it won't fit under their coats.  the nice thing about cowls is that my daughter will always rip her scarf off and she leaves her cowls alone.  no knots or ends to strangle on and it's tucked under her coat and out of her way when she plays.

i think she likes it....lol!  the other fun thing about this cowl is it's a simple knit/purl combo rib that is super easy for a beginner to practice knitting on but also a great project for an advanced knitter to use that special yarn they want to showcase.  i also think the pattern would be perfect for both boys and girls to wear.  cowls are versatile and stylish.  wanna make one??

The Mallory Cowl Pattern - Child Version: Only $1.99!

*2 patterns for 1!!! This pattern also comes with the adult version of the Mallory Cowl! Now you and your wee one can rock your cowls together!

Pattern notes and more for the Mallory Cowl (Child Version) can be found on the ravelry pattern page here and pattern notes and more for the Mallory Cowl (Adult Version) can be found on the ravelry pattern page here.  The Mallory Cowl is available for only $1.99 and you get 2 patterns for the price of 1! Woot woot!

A fun, stretchy, and cozy cowl just perfect for that special little one in your life!  Wear it as a long cowl for style or wrapped twice for a stylish way to keep your kidlet warm.  Every little girl loves to feel just like mommy in fact I think a little boy would look equally as adorable! So mix it up and have some fun!  This easy basic pattern is a great way to experiment with yarns, needle sizes, working in the round and new techniques.

Yarn: 1 Skein Cascade 220 Heathers in colorway 9322, 220yds/100grams
Needle: US 15 (10mm) 24"Circular

moments in the mommyhood - the end of the 'stache is near!

oh ya...it's that big folks.  that giant, hairy thing above my hubbies mouth is his mustache.  it's nasty...and guess what..this pic is from a week ago at least!  ohhhh.....god...it creeps me out so bad ladies.  each night when he falls asleep all i want to do is shave it off.  i did study barbering in hairdressing school so maybe he wouldn't even notice me doing it??

he keeps threatening me that he's not going to shave it off....i'm scared folks...scared.  this momma is shakin' in her boots!

i mean look, even the kids are scared of the thing!!!

we had a good friend come and stay with us the other weekend and my hubby and him so sweetly took the kids out all day one day so i could get some serious rest for my back.  these are all pics they brought back for me to find on the camera.  they also brought me back starbucks, dinner, and some ps3 games to play!  how awesome are they?

we love it when visitors come to stay at chateau cook...lol!

i love these shots of big sis helping little sis.  rare moments that these two are getting along and not fighting.  oh man am i nervous for when these two are teenagers.

i even got to check out some pics of mack whooping it up at her soccer game.  cold...but fun!

i love how happy she looks here..

and i'm dying to know what caused the look on the kids faces!  maybe it was the shock of the size of my hubbies mustache??? i'm so thankful it's so very close to december 1st and i can have my non-porn star, non dirty cop, non creepy man hubby back...hahahaha....sorry hun :P

so what about you guys?  did the rest of you manage to survive movember?  are you all as happy as i am to see the hairy caterpillars go?  let's chat 'stache mo'sistas!

p.s....for all you sewing lovers i've got a great and oh, so talented guest poster coming on next week with a to die for tutorial!  so stay tuned...i  haven't forgotten about you all.  i figured since i can't sew right now i would enlist the help of others to help feed your habit!

Keeping It Organized - Tiny Prints "Lifeplanner" Review!

one of the questions i get asked the most is "how do you do it all?" and the answer i most commonly give is "i don't sleep much and i try to stay organized".  how do i stay organized?  i use an organizer. yep, not a cell phone or blackberry or computer program - an actual organizer.  it keeps track of my appointments, play dates, birthdays and most importantly - my blog!  i keep all my notes, ideas, blogging calendar, goals, to do's etc...all in one easy accessible place.  it's always right beside me and i'm always using it.  i like being able to hold it in my hands, that it's not electronic and does not require batteries.  i can sketch, jot down ideas, and much more with ease.

so when tiny prints contacted me about doing a review of one of their products i jumped at the chance - firstly because i love their shop and secondly because i have been eyeing up their organizers for months.  i scooped my fave one up without blinking an eye.  i knew i wanted a week-at-a-glance on the go lifeplanner by the fabulous designer erin condren.  i adore the modern lines, customizable covers, and overall graphic styling of her organizers.  it has a hard laminate cover with sturdy pages inside.  it's ringbound (yay!) and the monthly tabs on the side are a life saver!  i was one happy momma.

when my organizer arrived i have to say it was pretty close to when fabric/yarn show up at my door.  i squealed, did a happy dance and freaked out my kids with my excitement over an inanimate object.  i now accost anyone who comes in my home to show it to them.  LOVE it!  it is the organizer of my dreams.  seriously...it puts my old one to embarassing shame.  i will never...EVER...go back :)  wanna know what's inside?

*sturdy laminate plastic cover  *ringbound  *monthly tabs  *sealeable pocket  *folder pocket  *gift labels  *stickers  *specials dates section  *days of the week split by morning/day/night  *month at a glance  *year at a glance  *party invites  *lots of space for notes, memos, to do's & goals and more!!!!

wanna see?

i love the inspiring quotes....

the yummy stickers...

perfect for adding some color to your day...

and to mark all those special dates!

i like having the option of month at a glance pages...or seeing my mornings, days & nights with room to keep track of goals & to do's as well!

there's also space to organize all my papers, receipts....

and a special spot to keep other items safe...

that came filled with fun goodies!

i LOVE being able to keep it together.....well..sometimes that is :)  i am a mommy after all.  life is never "kept together" all the time...lol!

but it's fun to try to stay on top of things and have the tool that helps me function day to day to be pretty darn cute and lovely to look at to boot!

bonus is while you are shopping over at tiny prints you can also drool over their gorgeous shop filled with:

greeting & holiday cards...

party invitations...

address labels...

and birth announcements...plus a ton more fabulous lovelies!

this momma gives tiny prints two thumbs up!  so whatcha waiting for?  go get organized and head on over to tiny prints and use coupon code "PLAN1011" to save 10% off your order!  they also have a great 3 day cyber sale on as well.  happy shopping!

The pictures in the book are absolutely beautiful and make me want to pull out my quilting supplies right away. Personally I love charm packs and jelly rolls. Although any precuts are fine by me. I've been known to sit and play with precuts for hours rearranging them exploring all different possibilities. The gifts that keep on giving.

and the winner of a 3pack bundle of tutorial e-books from Birdsong Bows is:

christmas knitting 911 - your holiday crafting support group

rebecca and i have been so excited to make our little surprise announcement!  we thought what better way to keep the fun going until our next knit along in january than to have a special christmas knitting 911 - a holiday crafting support group!  a topic in the ravelry group where we can all share our xmas pressies on the go, our finished pics, questions we have, help we need and just plain encourage each other to get those handmade gifts done for our loved ones :)  you can knit or crochet, or even better - do both!
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/balls-up-
there will be posts on luvinthemommyhood and on nook with gift pattern ideas roundups, maybe a question and answer segment, how to pick gifts that are reasonably not too long to knit... (or crochet) and choosing the fibers to make them, how to gift wrap and make sure the recipient knows how to care for their handmade gift, pics of your handmade goods... the list goes on.  all we can promise is that we hope it will be a fun and encouraging place where we can all go through the xmas crafting hysterics together :)

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/citron
we're open to your ideas and suggestions on what you guys would like to see go on as well for "christmas knitting 911".  so please share in the comments below what would help you get through this holiday season of gift making.  i also apologize to all you sewers out there, at present i'm unable to sew still and probably won't be back on the machine again till after the holidays.  i promise to have some sewing goodies and posts on here as well so stick around...i haven't forgotten about y'all.

Kids Crafternoon Blog Party - Felting & Beading

i'm so happy to have another book review for you guys today!  i'm excited to be part of the kids crafternoon blog party for two new releases "beading" and "felting" from publisher hardie grant books.  both books contain 25 fun and crafty projects that are perfect for an afternoon filled with creative goodness.  both books are edited by the fabulous kathreen ricketson of one of my fave blogs "whipup".  kathreen is also the author of our recently reviewed "little bits quilting bee" and "mini quilts".

both books are very well laid out and organized.  i adore the template pockets in front...so handy for us moms to have.  the ring binding was also a hit in our house.  i love ring binding for craft books when you need the pages to stay open while big and little hands are crafting away.  the colors, instructions and illustrations used throughout the book were clear, concise and very easy to follow.  even though my daughter is only 4 they held her attention.  they both covered techniques, tools, how to's, safety etc in the start of each book.

we had a great time sitting down together on a rainy, gloomy day and flipping through both of these bright, cheerful and imaginative craft books.  to say that we found a few new projects to make would be a lie.

i think we would happily make just about every project in both books but the one that caught our eye first was the adorable eraser head from "felting".  here's our version:

isn't she cute?  we love her.  mack named her tessa...lol.  took no time at all to make and mackenzie got to practice her cutting & measuring skills while learning how momma sews buttons on.  she also decided what color felt, buttons and drew the mouth for me to stitch.  we had a lot of fun making one and i see many more in our household :)  each project in these books gives you a time approximation that it would take to make.  i love that.  sometimes even i think something will be quick and it ends up being way too involved for my wee one to sit through so having a timeline is super helpful for us.  this project took us maybe 15 minutes once we had all our supplies gathered.  it's still being played with as i type this.  here's some of our faves from felting:

and we can't forget about beading!  i found more than a few things momma & daughter wanted out of this one...

seriously...how cute are these projects?

we are die hard mario bros fans in our house and these magnets have to be made :)

i also love the frames and skull bag!  so fun!

love it!!!  these books do not disappoint and true to kathreen's impeccable taste and style she's put together two fabulous books filled with what crafting should always be about - imagination and FUN!   thanks so much to hardie grant and kathreen for inviting me along on the tour!  both books will be well used in our homes and with the rainy/winter season upon us this mom thanks you :)

makin'it in the mommyhood - dreaming & eye candy

All Amy Butler Lark Collection - 1. Charisma Midnight 2. Kasbah Midnight 3. Charisma Blush 4. Heirloom Blue Sky 5. Nanna Chic Cloud  All from www.stitchsimple.com
i got this lovely bundle in the mail the other day from my sponsor www.stitchsimple.com (all fabrics come pre-washed and pressed) and let me tell you...it's been killing me not to cut into it.  i've been sitting on the couch just staring at it's loveliness dreaming up ideas and patterns.  i can't bear to put it away.  i have to admit i wasn't sure about amy butler's new line "lark".  i hadn't seen it in person and i have to admit it's hard sometimes to shop online when you can't see or touch the fabrics.  but wow...i took a chance on some of my faves and i love each of them.  so bright, fresh and colorful i will be ordering more.

i love the flower pattern on these two charisma prints below...i'm addicted to them at the moment...

but my favorite print is by far the kasbah midnight....i LOVE this one!

i forsee some lovely little goodies made from both of the prints below.  i've got a thing for the doily/lace edging of nana chic cloud and i'm just giddy over heirloom blue sky.  oh how it's killing me not to sew....really.  this has been the longest i will have to go without sewing since i started.  it's torture!

i've also had to put on a hold an upcoming ladies dress tutorial for celebrate color.  this lovely voile (shown below) was sent to me from one of my fave online fabric shops - hawthorne threads (thanks you guys - you rock!) and is from the heirloom collection by joel dewberry.  it's super soft, silky and just plain gorgeous! i cannot wait to share the pattern with you all in the new year!  you can also win some for yourself too! simply make sure to enter your project into the "wearables" section of celebrate color for your chance to win this very fabric and many other fabulous goodies!  november is the last month for celebrate color so get your entries in for yarn, quilting and embroidery!

joel dewberry heirloom collection in voile 1. ornate floral in amethyst 2. opal in fuschia
in the meantime though i've been knitting to keep my mind off of my longing for poppy the pfaff.  i ordered some knitpicks stroll tonal yarn in colorway gypsy and boy do i love it!  this lovely yarn is only $9.99per skein (462yards) and is a hand painted superwash merino blend - an awesome deal! i took a leap of faith ordering this as i needed a fingering weight to make the "audrey" cardigan by jane richmond and couldn't afford to use the yarn that i really wanted.

it's been awesome to knit (very soft) with and the tones are subtle and very pretty.  the cardigan has a lovely, squishy drape just perfect for this pattern!  i'm super addicted to the audrey at the moment and can't bear to put mine down :)  i'm using 3.5mm needles so it's a labor of love i tell you.  see those rubbery purple things on the end of my needles?  best couple bucks i've spent in a long time.  they are the knitting needle point protectors from knit picks.  love them!  i have some other point protectors but they never fit my needles right and always slide off. these ones are super tight and rubbery and come in two sizes.  two thumbs up in my book!

the lovely  jane richmond herself came over last week to visit my poor self and to wind a whole whack load of yarn for me...all of which funnily enough were for patterns of hers.  i've got ready to go "joe" for the hubby for xmas and also yarn (cascade 220 heathers) for an upcoming release of jane's that i cannot wait for you all to see!  lots of fun!  i'm also still knitting away on the turquoise xmas pressie i've got going and another xmas pressie for my sister-in-law as well.  busy busy.  if you can't sew you might as well knit...lol.  so pick up those needles, grab your hooks and dust off your sewing machines...just get creating and just make sure to what you're making :)

you can find all my knitting projects and other miscellany on ravelry under "luvinthemommyhood". are you on there too?  make sure to share what you're working on in the comments below or in our flickr group.  we all love to see pics of your handiwork!  it's so fun!  so.....whatcha been making?  c'mon....spill the beans.....

moments in the mommyhood - surviving movember

i'm taking a low key day today but i'll be back tomorrow with a carefree cowl knit along post and a special mommyhood 911. i'm still on bedrest here and it looks like i'm on the down low for a while...i'll fill you ladies in on that later though :) in the meantime you guys know that one of my fave things about my hubs is the little surprises he leaves me on our camera.  he likes to take the kidlets on saturdays for me to give me a break to rest and sew (lately it's been mostly resting due to my screwed up head and back..lol) and then a few days later i'll upload the camera to our computer and find little jewels of their adventures with daddy.

they are always funny little snippets & videos of what trouble & mischief they all got into while mommy was at home :P  like chasing and cornering a poor innocent peacock...who does that...lol...

do you guys know what "movember" is?  well if you do you'll know why i'm now scared of the month of november.  i'm scared that my cutie pie hubby is now going to look like an aging porn star.. or a cop from supertroopers....lol...oh god...the pics below are just the beginning and i can only imagine what he's gonna look like by the end of the month...oh movember...you scare me so...lol!  it's a good think it's for a good cause.

you can find more info on movember here and my hubbies movember page here.

in the meantime fill me in on how your week is going.  are any of you going through the "movember" scenario?  what have you all been up to?  sewing?  knitting?  i'm going through sewing withdrawl big time so share your pics...i'm dying to see what you've all been making.  come chat...i could use some cheering up :)
