makin'it in the mommyhood - simple skirt & a pretty new dress

so excited to share this little dress with you guys.  it was a labor of love.  something i've had brewing in my mind for a little while now that i just hadn't had time to make.  with the end of summer upon us i figured i better get cracking otherwise this little dress would quickly become a tunic over a long sleeve top for the winter...and although that is adorable i really wanted to see it out and about in the warm sunshine.

the special thing about this dress to me is the bodice.  the way the back/front, straps, and faux button placket all fit together like puzzle pieces around and into each other.  it may just be the trickiest thing i've made from scratch yet.  it was so fun to take something i had in my mind and make it an actual dress.  something that wasn't just a basic a-line.  a lot of this dress is owed to polly the pfaff (polly is a pfaff ambition 1.0).  without my new machine (whom i love) this dress would look like a pile of dog sheat..haha.  messy stitches and wonky bits all over.  with polly...the stitches are smooth, even and sewed like butter no matter how many layers i throwed at her :)

and you all know i could not resist a covered button right?  lindsay from the cottage home has gotten me hopelessly addicted to them (giant congrats her way as well! she had an adorable baby boy recently..so cute!).  really, i think i am a goner.   i'm about to order a big bag wholesale..lol.

i am so in love with this dress and have plans to make one for mackenzie too.  my question to all you lovely ladies is would you like to make this?  would this be something you would be willing to buy as a pattern?  i've really been toying with making a few e-patterns lately.  the dress would be customizable to be made in all sizes including a ladies tunic/dress.  i had at first intended on making a tutorial but then quickly realized how much work is involved and making my own patterns for you all has been a goal of mine for a while.  so what do you say?  anyone interested?

after i made the dress i realized i couldn't leave mackenzie out so when i asked her what she wanted she quickly replied a new skirt.  she chose her fabric for the skirt and asked for a pocket to match.  so i headed on over to "made" to whip up dana's fab "simple skirt tutorial".  so easy and so fast! i was done the skirt, pocket in all in under an hour!  it was fabulous! i added two rows of top stitching to the hem and also top stitching on the top and bottom of the waistband and also some lace trim to the pocket just for some extra pizazz.

i think one in my size may just be in order :)   i've got a thing for pockets.

i gotta tell ya it sure warms the heart to see my two cutie pies playing in the grass wearing clothes made with love and by my own two hands.  it's so fun to think back to just over a year ago when all i could do was sew a straight line.  i can't wait to see what next year brings!

i'd love to hear your thoughts on the prospect of an e-pattern :)  please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.  what have you been making in the mommyhood this week?  any lovelies for your kidlets?  any goodies for yourself?

Summer Sweater Knit Along - Blocking Party with guest Rebecca of Nook!

if you guys are anything like me blocking may seem like a strange and wondrous world.  having ever only blocked items like baby sweaters and hats/shawls doing a giant adult sweater seemed a tad on the scary side for me.  i'm a bit nervous...i'll admit it.  this sweater has taken me forever to finish and now that i have i really don't want to mess anything up.  so to help us wander through the world of blocking i turned to my knitting extraordinaire pal rebecca from the blog/shop "nook".  she's going to give us the rundown & the lowdown for blocking our precious new sweaters.

i've mentioned rebecca here just the other week when she guested on versus for her jardain coaster tutorial but i'll dare to repeat it again - this girl is the fastest knitter i have ever seen.  she can also simultaneously knit and.....type, cook, bake, chat on the phone and i suspect do anything whilst knitting.  she's a machine and i love her for it.  her spirit for knitting is super contagious and she always has the biggest grin on her face when she's doing what she loves.
if you guys want to catch the knitting bug too and you live in victoria make sure you sign up for some of her classes at "the cloth castle" - this fall is about jane richmond.  you can learn how to make hats, sweaters, cowls...you name it...becca's got a class for it all using jane richmond's awesome, kick ass patterns!

now let's get those sweaters ready for a dip...here's rebecca....

thanks soo much shannon, for having me here! i have so enjoyed this KAL as i know we all have, and have learned much along the way. bonus... we've got ourselves a sweater for the fall and winter season! woohoo! no better way to kick off the knitting season with one of our own handmade lovelies wrapped around us :)  and with that being said...

hurrah!!!! you've done it! you've chosen your pattern, you've researched your yarn.. swatched and swatched again... and after hours and hours of knitting, ripping, knitting again.. it's done!!! but not quite...  this last step (or next to last step) is quite important, and i'm always surprised to find that many don't want to bother with it. or don't know what it is, or how to do it...

but blocking your knitting will make your life easier! trust me.

basically, what blocking does for your knitting is this.. it flattens your stitches, making your knitting even. it will help to hide any little blips in tension that you may have had, and will give your fabric drape. (depending on how it's knitted). basically, what blocking does for your knitting is what ironing does for your clothes. note... DO NOT IRON your knitting.. no no, i'm just making a comparison. it just smooths out the wrinkles, and gives your knitting a beautiful finished and completed work of art.

honestly, you worked so hard on your project, this last step is maybe a tiny bit time consuming, as you have to be patient for it to dry, but it's oh so worth it.
so now that i've convinced you to take that final step and block... here's what you need to know:)

one thing i'd like to mention is if your sweater is knitted in pieces, before joining the sleeves, sides, etc.. you should block your pieces beforehand. your edges will lay flatter, and joining your stitches, or picking up sitiches are much much easier to do.

your blocking tools

Source: google.ca via Rebecca on Pinterest
  • blocking pins (it's probably recommended to get a rust-proof kind, as then you won't be surprised with little rust marks after many uses with your pins... and you can get them at your local yarn store)
  • towels (nice big ones)
  • spray bottle (depending on the method of blocking you choose to do)
  • blocking boards (also optional)
  • measuring tape
  • steam iron
blocking methods

ok you've got your tools, now what? well the fiber that you chose to knit with will determine the method you should block. why? because if you think about it, wool is sturdier and can handle a much stronger blocking, like a wet blocking, where as silk should never be wet blocked because it is so fragile when wet, and a spritz blocking would fare better...

so here's the dish. there are three basic ways to block wool garments:
  1. wet-blocking. this is achieved by pretty much soaking your garment in water. i use either the sink or the bathtub, depending on how large the project is. in this case, sweaters... well in the tub it goes! to press the water out of the fabric, gently squeeze the sweater. do not wring it.. as wool is fragile when wet, and you can damage your hard work! i like to roll it gently in a towel, and then step on it. change towels and then do it again if needed. you can get a lot of moisture out that way! then you'll pin your sweater to the proper dimensions (why you needed your measuring tape) and let it dry. you can pin it to a blocking board, or like me.. i just use a towel on the carpet..  because you totally soaked your sweater, this method takes the longest to dry.. usually a couple of days.
  2. steam-blocking. what you'll do here is pin your garment out to the desired size and shape wrong side up, then grab a pillowcase that you've made damp. set that on top of your knitting. then using a hot iron, on a steam setting.. gently press down on the pillowcase, forcing steam out. continue to do so until your pillow case is dry.
  3. spritz-blocking. this is best for fine-gauge wools. pin your beauty out to the desired dimensions, then using your spray bottle, spritz it until it's damp.. but not soaking.

ok. you've got it wet....now what?!

just make sure you've got your pins ready, and your measuring tape. you now want to pin your sweater to the size that you've been knitting it to. i use a towel on the carpet, and pin it to that. some people also like to put down a garbage bag, it's really up to you.. you just want to have your knitting pinned to the right measurements, and then left alone. remember, if you've fully soaked your sweater (wet blocking) this will take the longest to dry... a couple of days, probably. I also like to grab a fan and just have it blowing on the sweater. i check it every once in a while too... just to make sure it's drying evenly.

got it? easy peasy! now want to know which method will suit your lovely sweater best? look no further, dear friends! i have found the most helpful and wonderful article on knitty.com. it's great! it goes into wonderful detail on which blocking method is best for which fiber you have knitted with. fibers touched on here include linen, cotton, silk, wool, cashmere, merino, alpaca, mohair, 100% human-made fibers, and blends. there's a great chance that the fiber you've knitted your awesome sweater with has been covered in blocking techniques, so go on over and take a peek.

click here for more info on blocking! and once you've blocked your lovelies, wear with pride! congrats!  thanks soo much shannon, for having me here as your guest! and thanks so much for hosting this kal! i had a blast, and can not wait until the next one!

thanks for helping us out rebecca! you rock girl!  i'll be blocking my new sweater today...cross your fingers for me peeps!

Peekaboo...look what's new...

i have a few family members who are storing and scouring for vintage sheets on hornby island, bc for me :)  we love visiting hornby island for the beaches, the vibe, to relax and see family but also for their farmer's market and free store.  yep, free store.  there is such a thing.  it's like a big thrift store filled with goodies and furniture but it's all free!  i always find vintage sheets when i'm there so since we weren't able to go the last 2 years our family saves up what they can find for when they come to victoria to visit.  this is my latest fave set!  don't you just love the colors!!! i couldn't resist showing it off to you guys.  anyone else got any good vintage scores lately?  i wanna see!

i hope you all had good a good weekend.  i had an especially busy weekend with polly the pfaff :) the hubs was sweet enough to let me get some serious sewing time in on saturday.  i managed to whip up a new design for a dress for the kiddos (made harper's size),

Alexander Henry Willow Grove Pink/Red In the Kitchen
 something for mackenzie and...

Michael Miller Children at Play Just Stay Little Turquoise
my newest knits tutorial!  woot woot!  i can't wait to show you all.  we decided to spend as much family time together as we could for the long weekend before the hubs got swamped with exams again so this post is short and sweet.  but don't worry, there's lots of good stuff coming your way.

ohhhh...to get some sleep...for both me and the hubs...

that my newish coffee maker isn't broken already...

to make it out to knit night with my ladies...

and to get some more time to organize my little sewing space and sew in it :P

it's a long weekend this week in canada!  woot woot!  i may or may not be here on monday, i'm feeling the need to just take the day to relax, unwind and spend some time with the fam while we actually get the hubs at home.

mackenzie is starting preschool this upcoming week and needless to say i am very, very excited about that.  she missed it and so did i.  what i did not miss though are the early morning rushes to get both kiddos and myself ready and out the door on time.  that is going to take A LOT of coffee and time to get back into a good routine again.  here's hoping harper's naps don't go all nuts and this momma can get some much needed blogging/creating time in :)

i missed knit night last week and boy oh boy am i dying to make it out this week.  i need to get my kal project in and i miss my girlies.  i've also got 3 other knitting projects in the works that desperately need to get finished asap as well.  who am i kidding...lol....there just seriously needs to be more hours in the day....honestly, sometimes i think this motherhood thing is like a big reality game show that we don't know about that's a race to see how much one person can accomplish/organize/parent/clean in one day all while staying sane, dirty diaper free and not losing their marbles.  i mean really...i've been pooed on so many times in my life already...

anyways..i digress.  i hope you guys have a wonderful weekend filled with cozy yarns, yummy knits, delicious, warm coffees galore, friends, family, laughter, fun and most of all...SLEEP :P

what are your plans this weekend?  any wishes you want to share?  i love hearing what you guys are up to and what you've got planned.  see ya next week :)

celebrate color - what palette inspires you?

i've been busy getting all excited for celebrate color and feeling so inspired for fall!  it could be the lack of a hot summer where i live, or the longing to sip pumpkin spice lattes from starbucks while cozying up in hand knit sweaters...who knows..lol, but whatever it is i'm ready!

the most important part about celebrate color to me is embracing all the different shades of fall and how differently we may all interpret them and create from those shades.  there are so many ways to look at the rainbow palette of fall so i thought i would be fun to share a few pics from a recent trip to one of our fave "makeshift backyards" that got me very inspired while picking out my palettes for my celebrate color tutorials. (what are my palettes? you'll have to wait and see..wink ..wink..)

how about some purples...mmmm....cool, calming...with hints of grey....

soft whites, with warm butter undertones...

bright pinks with flashes of red...

and who can forget the juiciness of orange and red!

make sure to pop over to "stitched in color" today as well for some more info on celebrate color, the rules, how to enter and more!  we'd also love for you to sport a button & show your luv!  here ya go!

Summer Sweater Knit Along - a postponement of sorts

we're almost there ladies!  the finish line is so close!!!!  it was originally going to be this week but after many emails and chats with you ladies i've decided to postpone the grand finale for 2 weeks.  so sept 14th let the prizes roll!  if you are done your KAL sweater make sure to get your pic uploaded to the luvinthemommyhood flickr page with the tag "KAL" so we can all see your lovelies and you are entered in to win one of the fab prizes!  then we will take a 2 week break and start up the next kal.  i'll be doing a post then to gear up for it where we can chat and vote on the theme and project ideas :)

here's my kal so far.  the dreaded border is all done.  phew...what an ordeal that was.  the neck/collar and front uppers were easy, it was the bottom sides that tricked me a bit.  still not sure if one side is correct but it's too late now :)  i've just got most of the last sleeve to finish.  silly thing is i picked up my sleeve stitches on the wrong side and now i have to purl every row!  i had already done it all when i realized what happened and i have to tell you after ripping out so many times with the border that i just want to get this puppy done.  this oopsie was all this tired momma's fault though.  so a purling i will go :)  let's just hope when it's done that it looks like this and not like a big heavy blanket on me...lol.

i still wish i had been able to afford to use the madeline tosh (mental note to splurge & do next garment with this).  the fabric is just so lovely.  i'm not sure mine is going to drape as nicely but here's hoping the magic of blocking will help those lovely stitches hang all nice and flowy.  i know blocking can be a scary thing for some so next week i'll be having a guest come on and give us all a little how to post on the behind the scenes business of blocking.  i can't wait...i definitely can use some help!  i've only ever blocked baby sweaters so i need some tips to do this one the right way.

Source: etsy.com via clare on Pinterest

so for now i'm gonna keep on knitting and try really hard not to get distracted by this lovely (a gift for a pal of mine) that i couldn't resist casting on for.........any guesses which pattern it is??

what do you think?  do you like it so far?  how are your guys sweaters coming along?  are you a blocking pro with tips to share?  did you make the effortless cardigan?

moments in the mommyhood - last days of summer

ahhhhh...what a view

beach beauty
we've been trying to keep the munchkins busy for the last few weeks of summer before preschool starts up again.  we attempted the beach on numerous occasions and let me just say it's been hit and miss.  we've learned the kids have to be in the right mood or it's a disaster waiting to happen.  i may have mastered swimming at the pool with them on my own but the beach is still a work in progress.  i did manage to capture this pic though that captured a brief moment of calm during our latest beach excursion (and yes, we hang on a vintage snoopy sheet at the beach...we roll like that).

caught in the act - stealing tomatoes in the early morning daylight

harper has been full of personality lately.  she's picking up new words and is into all sorts of mischief.  she definitely has been keeping me on my toes and making finding sewing time quite tricky these days. i'm hoping once mackenzie is back in preschool her naps will get back to normal again and momma can craft a bit more :)

smile!
getting into mischief
hanging in our makeshift backyard :P
this is what happens to a tired momma - you pass out on the grass..haha
we live in a condo that we rent so the hubs and i are always trying to find what we like to call "makeshift backyards" to hang in.  we dream of one day having our own little patch of green space for the wee ones to play in so that every time they need to run it doesn't involve packing, dressing, driving, walking, well..more on my part than theirs but still....i dream of not having to get out of my cozy clothes and find the time to do my hair/face just to let them play outside for a bit.  one day, one day...i'm sure you mommas out there living in apartments can all relate.  life is just that much more tricky to keep kids entertained if you know what i mean and of course, there is more park time and you all know how much i detest hanging at the playground :P and yes, that is me passed out on the grass in the pic above, that's what happens to very tired mommas who don't feel so good in the sunshine..haha.

me and the hubs
bear attack!
we recently hit up victoria's fabulous royal bc museum to check out the IMAX theatre.  i had never been before and we went to see a cool movie called "whales" that we all loved.  the hubs used to be an ocean kayak guide while going to university for the summers so he has a soft spot for whales, orcas, etc.  i couldn't resist posting the pic of the bear cause if you are a friend of mine you know how bad my phobia of bears is.  seriously people, i have almost been killed by a bear about 4 times now.  it's always a close call and they find me....no matter....where....i am.  hate the bears...hate them.

goofing at the imax
in between these happy pics were piles and piles of laundry, dirty bathrooms, messy carpets, unwashed floors, piles of sewing to be done, books to be read, toys to be played with, paintings to be made, tantrums to be had, naps taken, cuddles enjoyed, laughs had and cries had, momma not feeling so hot and momma feeling better, hubby exhausted from studying/work, but all in all, we love each other and we get by just like the rest of you super mommas & daddies do.
i hope you all had a good weekend and this week is a good one for all of us with back to school starting (for some it has already begun), new babies to enjoy (congrats to those who recently had gorgeous babes) and a few more weeks of summer rays to soak in the fun!

what have you been up to?  are you scared of bears too?  what outing do you keep trying but just can't seem to get the hang of?  do you have tips for finding balance during the day?  let's sip our imaginary pumpkin spice lattes and have some girl chat ladies!

sewing with knits mondays - finale roundup

have you guys been having fun with sewing with knits mondays?  i have!  unfortunately though today is the last day :(  anna and i had only intended it to be for 4 mondays and we ended up having such a good time we extended it for a few weeks but the time has come for it to end....but not forever - maybe just until next year??  hint hint anna :P

weekend wishes

that coffee could cure my endo.

short weekend wishes today ladies.  mama's dealing with a bad endo day today (just in case you don't know i suffer from endometriosis for which there is no cure).  i'm getting by but just not in the shape to do a weekend wishes.  i have to admit when i have some bad endo days i'm just not in an "optimistic mood" and because i strive to keep things real in the mommyhood i share the good and the bad days with you all.  today is a bad day so my weekend wishes would prolly be ugly to look at..lol and maybe a tad fake cause i would try to make them look pretty for you all and one thing i'm not is fake.

my house is a disaster.  like seriously a disaster.  i have now resorted to using my one of my kids toys to store my clean laundry in..haha.  i know, i know, but hey...it's clean right?  the carpet is horrible, but the thought of pushing the vacuum when you are in pain and not wanting to move doesn't appeal to me at the moment.  i just hope the baby doesn't eat too much food off of it..lol.  the kitchen floor is just ewww....and my bathroom...well, we'll just leave that one out of it..haha.  i'm sure there are some of you out there who can relate right?

thing is i love a clean house.  i like my crafting area to be organized and tidy.  i think, work and create much better in a spick/span environment but every time i get it all cleaned up an hour goes by and i'm back at square one again :P  aiayayaya.  such is life right?  harper's cutting a whack of molars and her nose is a human faucet so she's cranky and not sleeping good and for some reason because she isn't mackenzie has decided she "is lonely" in her room and coming into ours every hour or two.  needless to say i'm about done with that.  i'll be nipping that in the bud this weekend.  kid is tricky.  i have to outwit her constantly.

today she was eating a snack that came in a little bag and she knows she's only allowed one so instead of getting one she got 2 (without me knowing) opened 1 and dumped it into the other bag so it looked like she only had 1 snack.  who does that at 4??? seriously??  she even hid the evidence and tried to deny it.  said it came like that..hahahaha.  oh man, kids.  i only wish it didn't hurt to laugh right now.

so this weekend i've got knit night tomorrow (to finish my KAL hopefully) and our modern sewing group at the fab "satin moon" on sunday! i'm so excited for that.  it's keeping me motivated right now so i can get a good chunk of my quilt done when i'm there.  i'm aiming to get all the quilting for the top done on sunday.  3 hours of kid free sewing bliss for mama.  yes please :)

i'm wishing you all a restful, happy, healthy and fun weekend!  what are you up to?  sounds like you have all been busy bees crafting on the FB page!  i love chatting with you all on there - so fun!  what things are you doing "for yourself" this weekend?  let's chat girls!

we're almost at the finish line for the summer sweater knit along ladies.  i'm not happy about it though.  i'm sad for the kal to end.  i've been having so much fun that i think we need to do another one :)  i'm also sad because my sweater has gone from something i enjoyed working on to a pain in the ass!  man, oh man.  who would have thought.  i'm at the point now that i just want to "get it done".
via one yarn after another
i worked for hours and i mean hours on one small section of picking up stitches for my border only to realize after the 5th time ripping it out that maybe i needed some help..haha.  i took that bad boy to knit night and my fairy knitting godmother helped me out.  there is no stitch count to pick up for my pattern which is fine.  i had tried to do the old rule of thumb - 2 sts for every 3 rows but it wasn't enough.  the sweater was massively curling and pulling inwards.  so instead we took to measuring and separating the border in half, marking it, and then halving the half and marking it again.  so 4 quadrants were left.  each quadrant requires i pick up a certain amount of stitches.  but seriously, it took me the about 2 hours of my knit night time to only get 3/4 of the 66sts i needed picked up.  wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!    i then went home and stayed up way too late trying to get the other ones done only to realize the next day that i had to rip them out too.  i tell ya, i almost chucked that sweater in a ball in my closet to leave in the dark carnivorous corner of wip's that will never see the light of day again but then i thought of all of you, and how much i want this sweater to turn out and instead persevered.

i got a bit more help to finish the picking up of that side and got to work on my ribbing.  that part is fast for me thankfully.  i was thinking about it last night and realized i was supposed to go from one sleeve to the other but i was bored of the sleeve so i started on the border and now i think fate is testing me from straying from the pattern...lol.  maybe i should just do the other sleeve..haha, cause you know what, i started picking up the other bottom border last night and am already on #3 rip out.  i'm getting pretty irritated now.  my numbers are always off and i think i separated my quadrants badly due to my lack of sleep and working on it in the middle of the night.  so today i will be ripping back again and crossing my fingers it will be the last time especially because i still have the whole upper and neck part to still pick up.  oh my.  at least i can take comfort in the fact that i'm picking them up right...or so i hope...lol....

the only thing keeping me sane while knitting is that my knitpick interchangeable needles came last week!!!!!!!!  can we say LOVE!  i'll post more on those later.  in the meantime i thought i would round up some great posts on picking up those pesky stitches just in case i'm not the only one suffering from the "picking up blues".

so hopefully between these posts, knitting buddies, our ravelry group, the blog & fb we can all work out any issues we have with finishing.  it was also brought to my attention that a lot of you would like me to extend the deadline.  i'm open to that, and no, not just because i'm not done :P  the point of the kal was to get you all knitting so if enough of you all want the deadline moved then we can for sure do that.  if you would like to see that happen leave me a comment and let me know.  in the meantime, pick up your sticks and let's get clicking.  i can't wait to wear this bad boy.

are you stuck on a part of your summer sweater knit along project?  are you picking up stitches now?  have any tips or questions?  let's chat yarnies!

moments in the mommyhood - orchard of yarns (fibrations festival)

i got to spend some lovely time on sunday at the first "fibrations" festival here in victoria, bc.  the festival was held on the grounds of st. anne's academy in a lovely orchard.  the combination of sunny weather, orchard tress, beautiful grounds and yummy yarns was not to be missed.  the post took me a while to put together as i seriously had wayyyyy too many pics to choose from.  jane richmond and i hit up the festival and got the pleasure of seeing some fabulously talented yarnies, designers and got to hang on the grass knitting under an apple tree.  sighhhhh.

come take a walk around the festival with me.  here's some of my faves:

say cheese!
rachel jo - lovely accessories & great booth!
Arika - knit night buddy & volunteer at Fibrations
love the look on this lovely ladies face
Kattikloo Fibre Studio - lovely jane admiring the rich reds.
everything old - fab yarns, awesome patterns & we got to meet the designer Emma Galati who's stella cowl pattern is one of my faves!
Sara - fellow knit night pal & one of the Fibrations organizers
Victoria Handweavers & Spinners Guild

roving in the trees

it was a great show and i can't tell you how nice it was to go sans kiddos.  i needed the break i tell ya.  so thank you to the hubs for taking the wee ones while mama got to go drool over the yarn.  to find out more about fibrations check out their website or facebook page.  if you were there and had a good time please go share your thoughts on their fb page.  i know all the organizers worked very hard and feedback is a reward in itself!  thanks to all of those who lovingly put this festival together - we can't wait for next year!

do you have a fibre festival you go to?  what is your fave local yarn supplier?  designer?  did you get a break from the kids on the weekend to do something special?

Sewing with Knits Mondays - The Awesome Amy Cardigan!

it's monday!  i have to admit that monday's have become a pretty fun blog day for me lately.  i've been loving sewing with knits and hope you guys have been too!  when anna and i first decided to do "sewing with knits monday's" i knew i wanted to make a new cardigan.  i knew that i wanted to add something personal to my cardi and thus the "awesome amy cardigan" was born!

made from a soft, light-weight grey stretch i knew i wanted something to curl up in that wasn't too hot for cool summer nights but kept me warm in the winter.  i wanted it to be simple in it's design so you guys could make it too and i knew i wanted you all to be able to customize it.

what's different about this cardigan?  well it's got a pretty little ruffled detail along the shoulder seams and also some hand stitching all along the border of the cardigan.  do you likey?  i lovey!

why's this one called amy?  well last week i mentioned that i had been naming my tutorials after some pals from my knit night and this one is named after amy.  she's awesome :)  she blogs over at "the family feedbag".  be careful if you go over....trust me...you will end up cooking.  she knits, she sews, she quilts, she's obsessed with turquoise like me & she's a great pal.  put all these things together and well....she's AWESOME!  she's also a busy momma of 2 gorgeous little boys.

both amy & i love a great drapey cardi.  we are both always sporting our repertoire of them on a weekly basis.  i know my obsession with them lies in the fact that they hide and disguise the "dreaded overhang" and leftover baby belly...yes, i said overhang.  my arch nemesis.  damn that overhang.  if you hear me overhang i'm talking to ya....i'm gonna get ya one of these days but in the meantime i'm going to hide you with this awesome cardigan :)

so get excited!  get ready to have some fun, bond with your sewing machine and learn to embrace the knits!!!  you can do it!  look how excited sewing with stretch makes me!  how fun is it to make your own clothes that actually fit your own body?  want one too?  here ya go....jump right in!

Materials:

* 1-2 yards of lightweight stretch/knit fabric. Look for a nice soft drape.
* scissors
* embroidery floss (1 skein)
* embroidery  needle
* sewing machine
* ballpoint needle (for sewing machine - optional
* thread

Instructions:
1) Find a favorite drapey top, cardigan or tee and use this to trace your pieces to make a basic pattern from (if you made anna's top from last week or mine you could use this as a starting point or also follow katy from no big dill's tutorial for the billy cardi).  *make sure the stretch of your fabric goes left to right, not up and down.  I cut my back and both sleeves on the fold and the two front pieces normally.
2) Once you trace out your pattern pieces (I use freezer paper for mine) I made my overall length longer and also extended and angled out the front sides of my cardigan.  I also increased the width of the front shoulder seam pieces (this is for the ruffling effect if you choose to do this, if not, just leave at normal width) making them a few inches bigger than I traced. See the diagram above for an idea of what i did.  The broken lines represent the original pattern piece of mine i used to trace from.

3) Set your machine to your basting stitch and without backstitching sew along the two front shoulder pieces with a 1/4" seam allowance.  Then stitch another line at a 3/4" seam allowance.  Pull the bobbin threads to ruffle your fronts up to match the width of your back shoulder pieces.  Or you can use your machine to actually do the ruffling for you as shown in this post.
4)  With right sides facing each other (cardigan is inside out) pin your side seams together.  Using the settings for sewing knits on your machine (i like to use a zig zag stitch for these seams) stitch your sides together using a 1/2" seam allowance.

5)  Pin  your front shoulder seams to your back shoulder seams.  Stitch together with a 1/2" seam allowance using a zig zag stitch as well (you will be stitching between your two basting stitch seams).  Take care that your ruching lays flat & drapes nicely.  You can now remove your 2nd basting stitch which was done at a 3/4" seam allowance.
3)  Get your sleeve pieces.  I'm very picky about my sleeves and how they fit. I'm a busty gal so I don't like my arms to look any bigger than they need to..lol.  So I like to pin my sleeve vertically along the seam and try the sleeve on to get the exact fit I want.  I then use a fabric marker or pins to mark where I want to sew if I have to make any adjustments.  This is the fun part about customizable tutorials!  You get to make it to fit your measurements and dimensions!  So fun!

4)  Make sure that when the sleeve is pinned along the long edge that your sleeve still fits your arm hole.  I'm really picky about this for some reason and always do a trial pin to make sure my underarm seam will match up perfectly to the side seam.  I think it gives more of a professional finish.  After testing out your arm sizing and armhole measurements stitch up your long seam of your sleeve using a 1/2" seam allowance (again, zig zag stitch).
5)  Now we're going to sew in your sleeve.  There are a few ways to do this and the easiest I have found is by keeping your cardigan inside out and your sleeve right side out.  You then pop that sleeve into the hole of the armhole and when you look into the armhole you will see the wrong side or your sleeve.  Pin the sleeve to the armhole taking very good care that your seam for the sleeve and your armhole match up perfectly.  I like to start stitching there to make sure there is no movement or drag later.  Sew this seam again with a 1/2" seam allowance and a zig zag stitch.

6)  Time to finish your sleeve.  I folded back a 1/4" seam and then did a mock overlock the seam to give a nice finish.

7)  Fold your back neckline under 1/4" and finish the same way.

8)  Now comes the fun part!  Time to personalize!!!! Woot woot!  I got 3 strands of white embroidery floss and simply did a loose blanket stitch around the edge of both front sides and the whole bottom of the sweater to create kind of a scallop effect.  Make sure your stitches are even and not pulling your fabric.  You can find out how to do a blanket stitch here or many other places online and on youtube.

9)  Trim your threads and all your inner seams of your cardigan and go rock your new awesome cardi!!!  you go girl!!!

that wasn't hard at it all!  it's also a super fast cardigan project to whip together.  so go put that new fab cardigan on and go have a great time!  you look fabulous!  a big giant thank you to the lovely and talented jane richmond who was my photographer for this tutorial & my date to the fibrations festival where we took our pics after oogling over tons of yummy candy colored yarns, knitting in an orchard on the grass under apple trees and sipping yummy americanos.  not a bad way to end a weekend if you ask me - thank you jane!

make sure you check out what fun stuff anna's whipped up over on noodlehead today!  she's the best partner in crime!!  have you been stitching with knits?  make sure to come show off your projects on our "sewing with knits mondays" flickr group or link up in the comments below!  we love to see what you guys are working on :)  happy stitching!

and to remember this when i am wayyyyy overtired..which i'm pretty sure is everyday :P

our weekend is going to be filled with quite a bit of driving but not the fun kind.  i try to make it fun, but hey, an hour 2 times a day in the car for the kiddos isn't always an easy thing, especially if the destination isn't an exciting one.  the hubs has school all weekend which means we have to eat & get out of the house before 7:30am (or he doesn't buy me starbucks..lol) drive him to school and then do the same thing later in the day to pick him up as well as all the other outings we make in the car that day.  i'm not complaining, he needs a ride and it's his car too, but after 3 days of this schedule i just want to laze in bed and not drive my car...lol..  i make lots of the kids fave playlists for the ipod so we have lots of fave music to groove along with to take their minds off the time spent in the car and of course, missing their daddy.

by the way, totally off topic, i figured out starbucks next marketing venture...to make cologne that smells like their brews..lol.  jer has been studying at night at starbucks (i'm jealous) and when he comes home i swear i froth at the mouth.  as soon as he enters the room i smell their coffee.  it's the most delicious scent and it's even on his clothes.  i tell you if you are a die hard starbucks fan like me it's a VERY good thing when the hubs smells like starbucks..hahaha.  it's hilarious!

we've also got plans to hit up a new fibre festival in town called "fibrations".  all you folks living in or around victoria come on down!  it's sure to be tons of fun and will be held at the st. anne's academy orchard with lots of vendors, goodies for sale, auctions and demonstrations!  i cannot wait!  there will also be live music and entertainment.  i mean really, c'mon people, if you're into fibre arts whether it be knitting, spinning, weaving, crochet etc. this is THE place to be on sunday :)  you can learn more about this awesome event on their website or facebook page.  hope to see you there!

in the midst of my driving & hanging out at fibrations i need to seriously get some knitting time in as i still have one sleeve and all my ribbing for the sides and neck of my sweater - eek!  i also am working on about 4 tutorials for you guys - another eek..that i cannot wait to get done and show you!  there's also some exciting news i have to share in the next week or so that you guys will all think is fun too...so stay tuned :)

here's to hoping we all get lots of sleep, kick our colds, have lots of laughs, cuddles, crafting time (without kiddos) and warm sunny weather to bask in :)  happy weekend wishes ladies!  see ya on monday!

what are you all up to this weekend?  are you heading to fibrations?  any special crafting projects you hope to get time on this weekend? yippee it's friday!

Jardain Crochet Coaster Tutorial with Guest Rebecca of Nook

you all know i have a love affair with knitting & sewing but i also adore crochet.  it's the one craft that often get's pushed aside for me though.  it's not that i love it less, or don't enjoy it as much, i just for some reason always have my knitting & sewing battling it out.  so in honor of throwing some crochet love your way i asked one of my good friends rebecca of the blog and shop "nook" to come give us a fun, easy and very fun tutorial over on my other blog "versus" on how to make one of my favorite crocheted things - coasters!
rebecca is one of those people you meet who eats, sleeps and breathes knitting but she also crochets.  i mean seriously people, check out this blanket!!  LOVE!

she knits faster than anyone i know (her hands are like a speedy blur at our knit nights) and i know a lot of knitters. she also seems to have some strange knack for knitting in superhero style...she can be baking bread or making dinner - knitting, talking to me on the phone - knitting, i bet she even knits on the potty..lol. needless to say if there's a chance my bud can pick up her sticks she will.  she's got an adorable etsy shop filled with some of her handmade goodies, a pretty blog and if you live in my city (victoria, bc) she also teaches some pretty rad classes at the cloth castle.  check out her fall listings..where else can you take lessons for jane richmond's super stylish patterns?  plus you get to hang with rebecca and take it from me....she's super fun to be around.  i heart her.  she feeds me and makes me coffee....a lot.

so get those hooks & yarn out and get ready to whip up some jardain coasters!  happy hooking..lol.

moments in the mommyhood - stocking up

I Heart Linen Blend Squiggle Blue, Kona Cotton Natural, Brussels Washer Linen Blend Natural

it's been a bit like xmas for me around here lately and i couldn't resist sharing in my excitement with you all.  you all know that my little family lives on a tight budget with the hubs working full time and me as a blogger so fabric shopping and any extras are a process of me saving all my pennies from my lovely sponsors (you should check them out...they all rock)!  now that i have poppy the pfaff & have been busy organizing my sewing wall i realized that i was in desperate need of some new fabric.

All Kona Cottons

i try really hard to use all of my fabrics before buying more but lately it's been getting tricky to find enough yardage of certain prints to as time gunn says "make it work".  so i made a goal a few months ago to start saving up.  i went to my fave online sewing shops and made my wishlists.  yep, i'm a loser..haha.  i then drooled over my wishlists for a month or two and when it came time to order all i had to do was find the best price and place my order :)  sort of like an inspiration board of fabric swatches.

i like a nice variety to mix and match from for the girls and for myself. i have to admit though that a lot of the prints i got i ordered in 1/2 yards to see if i really loved it in person and for some of them i'm kicking myself.  i should have ordered more but oh well, the ones i did order a larger amount of i can't even bring myself to cut into because i adore them so much.  like that linen turquoise design by rashida coleman-hale of the fabulous blog "i heart linen"..hello....LOVE!  saying i love her books, blog and fabric is an understatement. i think she oozes talent in her sleep. i also got a nice order from one of my sponsors stitch simple that supplies ready to use fabric.  what's that?  it's fabric that is already pre-washed and pressed!!! OMG!!! seriously, it comes all fresh and just begging to be sewn with.  i still keep looking at it all amazed i don't have to pink it and wash it.  heaven :)

Michael Miller Children at Play Just Stay Little Turquoise, Michael Miller Children at Play Hopscotch Pink

i did learn a little bit of a fabric lesson though.  i need to just keep a reserve for fabric shopping on hand so that when a new line comes out that i adore i can get it before it's sold out cause man has the sarah jane line for michael miller "children at play" been hard to get.  everywhere i went this line was sold out and i kept getting more and more bummed out.  i finally found it (and almost this entire order) from www.fabric.com (awesome customer service here if you've never ordered from them before) and it is stunning.  absolutely gorgeous.  i'm still waiting on a few of the prints and already plan on ordering a whole whack load more.  it's beyond lovely and i've got a soft spot for illustrations on fabric.  i just want to plaster the girls in this line.

i've also got 2 yards of my fave print of the line "ballons in aqua" coming and i'm frothing at the mouth just waiting for it.  i'm obsessed with this print and it seems so are a lot of people as it was gone everywhere.  so lesson learned for me.  when i see a line pop up and my gut says you are going to love this and i have a few pennies put away i should snatch it up while i can.  it's been like torture to see all the lovelies made from this and not have it in my hands :)

Hoo's in the Forest Critters Pastel Blue, Hoo's in the Forest Trees Pink

i couldn't resist some turquoise and pink for the girls as well...a prerequisite in our house.  i always let mackenzie assist me in ordering fabric for her clothes as she is the one wearing them so i believe in letting her have a say in her clothes.  it would be a waste for me to order prints and make some cute clothes that just hang in her closet that she will never wear. she's very picky about her color palette and what she will and won't wear so i've learned the hard way to let her choose what she likes.  this season she was all over pink/purple and fruit and animals with a mix of princesses.  i even let her pick out harper's prints too.

Hoo's in the Forest Strawberry Apple Pink, Alphabet Soup Girl Meow Pink

you should have seen her face when the order showed up.  the two of us sat together and drooled and oooohheed and awwwwed over the fabric like crazy people.  i'm so hoping my love of handmade rubs off on my girls.  so far so good.  when she sees clothes she likes now in the stores etc she now asks me to make it for her instead of asking me to buy it for her.  it seriously makes me tear up :)

1001 Peeps Villagers Lavender

the prints below are two of my faves that i've had on my "to buy" wishlist for a while and i'm so happy i finally sucked it up and ordered them as i can't stop looking at them.  i just want to plaster my sewing area with the print on top.  i'm addicted to it.

Michael Miller Sorbet Spa Scallop Coral, Sweet Nothings Dots Cream

i hope you guys don't mind me showing you all my new goodies.  i'm not trying to brag that i got some new fabrics but rather share my lovelies with my friends (all of you) that i know understand how exciting and thrilling it is to actually be able to order some fabrics that you've been lusting after.  i love seeing when you guys get new goodies too so i figured it was my turn for a little show and tell.  now i've got to get busy washing all of my new pressies, pressing them and folding them up on my new comic board inserts ala smashed peas and carrots so my fabric shelf looks as pretty as my new fabrics do.  so far it's been a major improvement.  i can actually see what i've got instead of it being a big jumbled half ass folded mess.  now i've got to get back to sitting by my phone waiting for the postman and delivery guy to show up with my knitpicks order..come home needles...momma's waiting for you :P

have you been fabric shopping lately?  what's your go to fabric shop to splurge in?  is there a line that you've been lusting after too?  share, share...let's chat :)

sewing with knits mondays - jane with a pop top tutorial

it's monday ladies...time for some sewing with knits and i've got a new tutorial that i've been super excited to show you all!

it's the "jane with a pop top"!  a soft, comfy top sized to fit you that has a special POP of fun in the front to add some spice to our mommy life!  and seriously, we all know that when we are at home with the kidlets a lot a little spice goes a long way :P  this top is named after the lovely jane richmond, knitting designer extraordinaire & friend of mine.  she's got what i like to call "casual flair".  she's always stylish & hip and also always looks comfortable in her clothes.  there's that one thing on jane that seems to pop even if she's just in jeans and a tank so i only thought it fitting to name this one after her.  i spend a fair bit of time with my knit night gals and will be doing a few tutorials in the next few weeks that will be named after these special women but i'm not spilling the beans on who's next...

so go find some knit fabric in a bit of a thicker weight, you want something not too flimsy or thin but not as heavy as sweatshirt material and then coordinate it up with a fun print or solid for some sass!

i decided to go with the same cream i used for the "poppy top"...i know i'm daring...a white top with kids...am i nuts?  nope...just living on the wild side..haha.  then i added a pretty flower print in the middle for some color.  see that little bit of turquoise in it?  yep, there's turquoise in it and it matches my toenails. love.

i'm really into designing tutorials right now that are open to a lot of customization for you guys so you can still add your own personal flair, style and special touches to suit your body shape, size & make it flattering.  this top is simple in construction and easy to wear.  super comfy, stretchy and it fits in all the right places without accentuating those dreaded extra post baby pounds.  a big coup in our household.  it's also good for us busty and non busty gals.

this is a great project for an advanced beginner and up and is something that would be fun for even an advanced sewer to customize and play with!  so let's get ready....

***Copyright 2011 www.luvinthemommyhood.com
All rights reserved. For personal use only. Please do not sell items made from this tutorial unless permission has been given.

materials:

- stretch/knit fabric that will fit the size of your body and your pattern pieces (approx 1 yard)
- piece of quilting cotton (or other light material) to use as center fabric (should be long enough for the length of your top and as wide as you would like your strip).
- sewing machine
- scissors or rotary cutter
- paper for tracing pattern (optional - i like to use freezer paper for tracing my pattern pieces on.  if you choose not to trace your pieces you could pin the top you are using directly onto your fabric and cut but i find this really hard to get accurate cutting when using knits...they are slithery little buggers)
- coordinating thread
- needle for your sewing machine for sewing with knits.  a lot of people recommend using a ball point needle.

instructions:

1) taking a favorite tee/shirt lay out your top to use as your template.  see the picture below to show you how to trace this out or follow one of the many online tutes showing you how to do this.  you could also follow the instructions for the "MODify Dress tutorial" and just not make it as long as the dress.  this is basically what I did to get my base pattern pieces.

2) once you have your pattern pieces sketched out for the front and back this is when you can add your special touches.  take your front piece and draw a light line marking the center of your front.  from that line add 1.25" to either side and draw two more lines marking this (total opening should measure 2.5"w).  measure this width and length of this strip and mark it down.  you will need this later.  cut this center strip out.  you now have your right and left fronts and your back.   cut out your cotton strip for the front at 3.5" wide by the length you would like the top.  it's up to you what you'd like to do for your sleeves. you could cap sleeve it, ruffle sleeve it (like i did) or leave it like a tank...heck if you're feeling adventurous you could even put a long or mid length sleeve on it! super cute!
3) if you decide to add a sleeve now is the time to draw your pattern piece for the sleeve as well.  next up is your bottom band...my fave part!  you need to measure the width of the back of your bottom piece and add 1" to this.  this will be the width of your band - let's call it "A Band".  cut out a piece of your knit fabric the width of "A Band" and 10" high.  so for example if your top measured 38" wide you would cut out 39" x 10" for your band.  set these pieces aside.

4) we're now going to make that pretty front of your new top.  getting your cotton out pin your strip of cotton to one side of your front with right sides facing and sew with a 1/2" seam allowance.  now depending on your machine and it's bells and whistles you can do what i did and use a sewn overlock stitch and just go for it, trimming your excess off after or you can stitch down with a zig zag stitch (if this works for your machine for stretch), or use a straight stitch with settings to match your machine for sewing knits.  you could also just use a serger if you have one.  take care to make sure your cotton is straight if you are using a print and that the stretch of your cotton goes from left to right not up and down.
5) do the same thing for the other front piece using the other edge of the cotton strip.  this should leave you with a full front top.  now press your seams down nice and flat.  pretty :)  that was easy right?  you can do this :)  now we're going to sew up our shoulder and side seams.  stitch down the side seams using a 1/2" seam allowance as well.  now pop that pretty top on and pin/mark where you would like to stitch your shoulder seams.  i know you measured before but i always think it's good to try things on as you go.  after marking you can now sew your shoulder seams.  i stitched both my shoulder seams and side seams with a zig zag stitch for stretch for this portion of the shirt.

6) now that you have the back/front joined and the shoulder seam done you can attach your band (make sure if you have made any adjustments to the sizing of your front/back during the sewing process that you also adjust the width of your band).  take your band and fold in half (top to bottom) and press.  pin your short ends together and stitch this so that the band is equal to the overall width of your entire shirt (the measurement you found in step 2).
7) turning the shirt inside out and leaving the band right side facing out open the top up with the bottom up and insert the band inside so that the right side of the band is facing the right side of the top.  pin these two together and sew.  i used my mock overlock for this.  turn top right side out and press.

8) now it's time for your sleeves.  i made a sort of ruffled cap sleeve.  i took my pieces for the cap sleeves and finished the outer edge with a mock overlock right along the edge giving it a neat finish.  i then sewed a basting stitch (no backstitching) along the edge with a 1/4" seam allowance that will be attached to the shirt.  pulling your bobbin thread after sewing you can ruffle this.  after ruffling and finishing both sleeves you need to finish your armholes if you'd like.  i used a mock overlock for this again.  then turn your top inside out and the sleeves inside out and pin together.  i stitched these together with a mock overlock too with a 1/2" seam allowance.  remove your basting stitch.

9) now that the sleeves are attached you are almost done.  i wanted the neckline of the top to match the finish of the sleeves so i did a mock overlock along the entire neckline (front/back) as well right along the edge. get as close as you can. voila!  easy right?  fun to customize and a great way to add some POP to your basic top!

i've been counting down the days this week till the weekend.  i cannot wait for tomorrow night.  our knit night group is hitting the town and taking our little group out for some "bevvies" whilst we knit.  i'm super excited for a girls night out but also nervous i'm going to destroy my sweater...lol.  oh well...it's all in the name of fun right?

i've got hit by another cold.  not whining.  just sayin'.  it sucks.  i'll deal, but i'm tired and thanking my lucky stars that it's the weekend and the hubs will be home to help me out.  stupid colds.  i swear i've got a sign on me saying "if you're a cold come hang out, we've always got room in the inn".  dang it all.  so if you're waiting on emails, comments, posts or even drawings (buffy) they are a comin' just maybe a bit slower than normal.

i've got a fun tutorial for you all on monday..can't wait to show you. this weekend i'm also planning on finishing up 2 more projects for you guys, working on my quilt (so addicted) & my sweater, folding up the rest of my fabric into bolts (see facebook page convo for deets) & hopefully getting past my sore throat & soon to be faucet nose while snuggling with my babies & the hubs.

what are your weekend plans?  what crafty projects did you get working on this week?  wishing you all a summer sun, colorful, fiesty, healthy, restful, awesome kind of weekend!  see ya on monday!

moments in the mommyhood - taking the good with the bad

projects on the go, new vintage pitcher, nook hand knit coffee cozy :)
i've been working on projects galore at the moment accompanied by lemonade from my new vintage pitcher and best friend starbucks dressed up in a fab coffee cozy from my pal rebecca's shop "nook"  (you can find her lovelies on her blog & shop).  i'm finding it hard to tear myself away to get online i've become so engrossed in all the goodies i'm working on.  i've got 3 tutorials coming your way (i know 3!?..hopefully) for sewing with knits mondays.  i cannot even explain how obsessed with knits and stretch i am.  i have made myself a few new goodies and can't wait to share them with you.  best part is they are for us ladies - not for the kiddos.  i was in the mood to spoil myself and heck after a while a busty gal gets sick of tops not fitting "her girls" right if you know what i mean :P

i've been focusing a lot on trying to take the good with the bad when it comes to my girls.  to try to be the best mom i can be without losing my mind.  we've had a rough couple weeks around here with 4 year old emotions running rampant.  i honestly didn't think things could be harder after the terrible three's but heck these f&^@k'in fours (as my girlfriend fondly calls them) are winning that fight by a long shot.  i know there's more than a few of you who can relate and for those of you in the fives please tell me it gets a bit better...please?

our little harper helena mae is getting into everything.  she's figured out how to climb pretty much anything and it's become her new sport.  the little bit of rest i had left during the day is now gone - she's keeping me on my toes that's for sure.  she's running and talking and just plain seems to be growing up way too fast for this momma's liking.  i was looking at baby pictures of her the other day and had a good cry.  i know...i'm sad...but hey, i'm not having anymore babies so i figured it's ok to bawl when looking at pics of her from even a few months ago.  i mean look at those curls?  could those baby curls please stay forever?  they are my fave snuggle spot.

if you've been reading and joining in on the conversations on our facebook page we all had a fun chat about toddlers throwing food yesterday and i couldn't resist sharing a bit about it on here.  harper has decided that as soon as she is put in her chair to eat that she must throw something.  whether it's her water/milk or food she chucks it.  doesn't matter if she's hungry or not, she just loves to chuck her food.  i asked for help.  you guys answered.  we use a big blanket but she's strong enough to throw past it now.  you guys have been a lot smarter than me & have been using old sheets, tarps and the best one of all...shower curtains!  how smart is that!  waterproof & easy to clean!  thanks for the tips guys!

in other exciting news..well exciting to us anyways...our tomatoes have FINALLY started to come in.  the weather has gotten warm enough that our poor deck is now getting filled with yummy red goodness.  we usually have tomatoes taller than our railing but this year...not so good with the weather the way it's been.  but they're catching up.  they seem to be growing like crazy now and i can't keep up..lol.  for some reason some of our romas are growing like hearts.  it's cute but also a bit strange to bite into little hearts :P

we had some lovely friends come and stay with us the other week and we enjoyed lots of waterpark and sunshine time.  the weather has been nice here finally and we've been hanging in pools and beaches as much as we can with good friends, yummy food and of course, our knitting.  i was shocked when i realized it's already august :(  it feels like the summer has only just begun.

have you been taking the good with the bad too?  any tips for the 4's?  do you have a trick you want to share when it comes to saving beige carpet from messy babies/toddlers?  hope your week in the mommyhood has been good.  share your thoughts below :)

p.s. don't forget to get your entry in for the fabulous shoeology giveaway!  you can enter for your chance to win this great prize here!

p.p.s in case you are wondering that's harper's quilt in the first pic and i finally got over my quilting jitters and went full steam ahead with the rows of horizontal lines spaced about a presser foot width apart and i am in LOVE with it.  so glad i stuck with it.  i think it looks fab and i'm just over half way done now.  thanks for all of you who helped with my decision making.
