This sweater has been in the works through many ups and downs of the past year of my life. Through life lessons, health hurdles & tears, but also through happiness, laughter and positive growth. It is and has been my life…”lately”. Glimpses captured in wool and stitches. It’s what I want to curl up in and what was missing from my wardrobe. We could all use something to soothe us these days. Driftlines is a perfectly relaxing – but definitely not boring – knit that features a fun design. The hybrid construction of Driftlines makes it a unique pattern, combining both a shawl and a cowl in one. When worn, it looks like a triangular shawl from the front and a cowl from the back. It's so simple to wear - just slip it on with no fuss of tucking in your shawl ends or bulk in the back neck. Hello friends! I’m soooo excited to say my newest pattern - Driftlines - is here! It’s been a while (too long actually) and it feels both wonderful and emotional to introduce this lovely to the world! This pattern is near and dear to my heart for too many reasons to type. I really needed a knit on my needles that was both interesting and meditative, and that was an accessory that filled a void in my wardrobe. It was also just what my anxious mind needed.

You all know I LOVE shawls. Any kind and any shape. But the ones I reach for a lot are triangular shawls. I like wearing them with the point in front and the ends wrapped around my neck. But sometimes you don’t want all that bulk in the back neck and you just want to just throw it on/off without fiddling with the ends. Thus the hybrid cowl/shawl. Can we say yes please?! It looks like you have on a triangular shawl but it’s a cowl! In love!!!!!

DESIGN

I’ve been wanting to play around with the construction and shaping for Driftlines for a while. I had a lot of fun designing it and I so hope you’ll enjoy making it. The textures on Driftlines are so cozy and lovely! That pretty slipped border stitch paired with the raised slip stitches and garter in the main body just make my heart happy. I got inspired for the stitch patterns and design after a hike with my husband and fur baby on a trail near where we live. We ended up on the beach when the tide was out and the driftlines in the sand never left my head. After I got home I grabbed my sketchbook and Driftlines was born.

The pattern itself is suited to neutrals/brights, tonals & slightly variegated yarns! As long as you don’t lose the texture you’re good to go! And guess what else - it’s a very quick knit! Yaaaas! Perfect for gift making or treating yourself - I’ve already made 2 and am about to cast on a 3rd - hmmmm…should we have a KAL???! Driftlines only takes 466 yds/426 m of worsted weight wool too so it’s a great stash buster or a project for trying out a new to you yarn!

It's been years since I released a pattern and I find myself emotional as I type this to you friends. I keep trying to write and rewrite all the thoughts that are in my mind and heart but it's way too much to pop into this wee newsletter today. But I do want you all to know how much your support these last few years has meant to me. I've missed you all so much and putting this pattern out into to the world feels like getting to hug a much loved friend that I haven't seen in way too long. I truly hope knitting Driftlines brings you both joy & a sense of calm and that you also enjoy wearing it as much as you did knitting it.

I also want to thank all my fabulous testers for making the process of getting this pattern out into the world that much more fun - a few were on there 2nd and 3rd versions! And getting to work with my fave photographer Koyahni again - photoshoots just make me so darn happy - they are one of my favourite things to do in life. Seeing my design story come to life is just the best and our sweet model Alyssa was a joy to work with.

MEET HARO

HARO is the newest shawl pattern of mine for this year's Hinterland Straits 2017 collection! Haro is meant to be curled up and snuggled into. It's the shawl you reach for on blustery days, for seaside strolls & chilly nights, and on days you just need a knit hug.

HARO features a half-hap shawl construction. Worked in two colours of Hinterland Range, the Haro shawl is a stunning composition of openwork, texture, and colourshifts. The fabric of this generously-sized shawl is soft and cozy, with repeated stripes that create beautiful swirls reminiscent of cascading waves when wrapped for warmth.

Over the last few months our first home underwent a kitchen reno. It's been a fun, sometimes stressful and very educational experience...lol. If you've ever renovated I'm sure you know what I mean. I was lucky enough to pick up my basket from Tolt Yarn & Wool Shop last spring and I adore it. I've been on the hunt since then for the same style but in a shopping tote size. Well I finally got tired of looking around to buy with no success that I decided to design a tote that's inspired by the shape of the African Shopper Tote.

I just knew when I spotted the new fabric lineWanderer by the oh so amazing April Rhodes forArt Gallery Fabrics, that it was the PERFECT fabric for my new Bucket Basket Tote! I loved the tribal vibe and the color palette! So I'm more than thrilled to be a part of April's fabric tour for Wanderer today! All the prints I used were from the Air palette. I used Serape-Dream, Sacred Seeds Brittle, Temple of Asiaq, Crochetting Clouds, Gust of Leaves Silver and Sacred Seeds Mojave.

So pick out your fave Wanderer prints to feature and get sewing your very own Bucket Basket Tote! It's easy, fun to make and such a cute tote! It fits infinite amounts of goodies and features a pocket inside. There's not too many bells on whistles on this tote as I wanted to keep the shape of the Bucket Basket the star of the bag. I also wanted to let you have some fun with customizing it as you go!

I'm dreaming of versions of this quilted, with piecing in the mid portion, embroidery etc. I was dying to make my straps out of leather but I just couldn't get my hands on leather straps in time for the pattern release. I hope to do one in the future though. I'd like to do the bag in some faux leather mixed in with a fun print! See....so many options! You know how I love that and I hope you all do too!

NEW FREE PATTERN || FARBE COWL!

Who's in the mood for a new free pattern? Yay! I'm so excited to show you all the FARBE Cowl!

It's been getting pretty cold over here on Vancouver Island and I've been craving a new super chunky cowl! I adore color blocking and thought it would be fun to whip up a new free pattern for you all showcasing just that!

The FARBE Cowl is warm & cozy, fast to knit up and adds a great pop to your fall/winter wardrobe! It's also a great beginner pattern! You can access the FREE download for FARBE on Ravelry, in our VeryShannon Shop or via direct download HERE.

I love the combo of black and white and think it pairs so nicely with my winter wardrobe. The FARBE Cowl would look great in so many color combos! You could add some fun stripes or a 3rd color! Lots of options for you to add your special touch to your FARBE Cowl. It's knit up in a super bulky weight yarn on large needles for a nice drape and it works up in just a few hours! Can't beat that during gift giving time!

If you're a beginner knitter don't be scared of FARBE. This is literally plain knitting but you get to learn 2 new techniques that are a great asset for any knitter's skill set - the Provisional Crochet Cast-On and the Kitchener Stitch. Both look way harder than they are and once you try them you will find yourself using them all the time. They allow you, in this pattern, to knit flat so you can customize how long/wide you'd like your cowl to be and then seam your ends easily and invisibly when you are done. The free pattern includes visual links to learn how to implement both of these techniques.

I was so excited & thankful to have my lovely friend Rebecca (of the blog Nook) to be my model for me again. You may recognize her from both the Lansbury and Mallory cowl patterns. She's one of the fastest knitters I know! She's a hard working product and sample knitter and a sweetheart! We drove down to one of my fave beaches for this photoshoot. I owe her one as it was freezing cold out that day! The sun was out and it sure was gorgeous but darn was it cold! Good thing she was wearing the FARBE Cowl!
