This month for Making Ourselves my focus has been on food. Not a diet, but healthy lifestyle changes. You see I hate to cook...most of the time. Realistically I would much rather be sewing or knitting! Let's face it - cooking eats up into the creative time that I enjoy best. But now that we moved into our house my hubby gets home later and guess who has to make dinner most nights? That's right - me. Insert sad face.

BIG CHANGES COMING!
Something I'm very excited about is happening! I've waited a very long time to do this and I'm beyond thrilled to say we are FINALLY moving the blog over to my full website at veryshannon.com!
The blog will be under construction from Sunday, March 15th through Monday, March 16th. We thank you for your patience during this time.
Now you will find everything in one spot and the url - www.luvinthemommyhood.com won't confuse you all anymore. Don't get me wrong, my days with luvinthemommyhood were so special and it was an amazing part of my life, but like all things, we grow, change and evolve. When we rebranded to Very Shannon a while a go I thought I would migrate right away but it was beyond my scope of technical knowledge. So I finally found someone I trusted to move the blog over so all your old links won't be messed up and things should hopefully run smoothly (fingers & toes triple crossed).
I'm very excited for the blog and hope you will all enjoy it as well! I've been so happy using Squarespace where my website is and I can't wait to be able to blog using it now as well. It allows me so much more freedom for formatting my posts and showing you guys more information and images in a fresh format.
If you haven't already visited me at www.veryshannon.com please pop by and say hi! You can find our shop on there as well as lots of other fun pages such as well as all of our Knit Alongs, a Tips & Techniques page for them, FREE Tutorials, Roundups and more!
In the meantime happy making & creating and we'll be back soon!
NEW PATTERN & KNIT ALONG || LORELAI & THE GILMORE GIRLS KNIT ALONG!!!!!
The LORELAI Shawl pattern release and the reveal of our new mystery knit along is here! It's time for our newest knit along - GILMORE GIRLS KAL!!!!!
Me and the talented ladies behind Nice & Knit have been excitedly waiting for today! As soon as I set eyes on the gorgeous skeins of Nice & Knit DK they so kindly sent my way I knew they had to be a shawl. After spending way too much time binge watching Gilmore Girls I was feeling inspired by Lorelai and all her flair & fun personality and the LORELAI shawl was born!
LORELAI SHAWL PATTERN
Can't you just imagine Lorelai strolling past Luke's in her fave jeans & rock n'roll t-shirt, wearing this shawl? I can!
I wanted something filled with color and life. The combination of lace stitches and stockinette play up together to create a textural and graphic effect that suits any color palette that fits your personality! Pastels or brights - doesn't matter! It all works with Lorelai!
When I designed LORELAI I also knew I wanted to host a surprise Gilmore Girls Knit Along at the same time! So we're going to do something different for this KAL! STITCHES WEST 2015 RECAP - PART ONE!
I recently returned from Stitches West in California and couldn't wait to share with you some of the new lovelies I picked up at the show.
Jane and I had such a great time and I've got some fun pics to show you from the show but I figured it would be easier to split my recaps up - one for goodies and one for pics! I know I love seeing when other people do recaps of when they go to events I can't make it to. I've still never been to a sewing convention so I live vicariously through others pics.
We really didn't get as much time for shopping as we had anticipated. This always happens to us though..lol. In the end we ended up being the nerds we are and putting the booths "we must shop at" in numerical and priority order so we didn't miss the ones we really wanted to shop at. We definitely needed a whole other day dedicated to just "shopping". It saved my wallet though not having that extra time. With the exchange rate the way it is I'm sure glad I didn't buy more than I did. Ouch.
Ready to see what I brought home? Yay!
/// YOTH YARNS
I picked up a lot of goodies at the YOTH Yarns booth where we did our book signings. I'll chat more about their booth in the next post but let me just say - it was AMAZING!!! I wanted everything. I was so glad I scooped on these awesome tapes (show above) when I did as they sold out super fast. Aren't they adorable?
I also couldn't resist these adorable flowered stitch marker tins! So cute! And YOTH was also selling the best tape measure ever (in very first picture above)! It joins in one end to form a circle so you can measure your bust with your arms down!!! Say what!!! And your arms and whatever part you want to! Bodybuilders usually use them! They are so smart those YOTH Yarn peeps ;) I only came home with 1 skein of YOTH because, dudes....the booth was almost sold out when we left on Sat. I figured I would be nice and leave inventory for all you shoppers :)
I also brought home one of my favorite new bags!!!! These were coveted! You only got one if you bought a certain amount at YOTH Yarns. Word on the street is that they won't be selling them anywhere else either. You can only get them at shows. One side says "Pretty Things Inside" and the other says "YOTH Yarns".
/// COCO KNITS
Ok, so full admission here - I've been wanting one of the fabulous Knitter's Keep from Coco Knits since it came out. But I really wanted to try one on in person. So when we found out they had a booth at SW we had to get there. When we made it there we proceeded to make dorks of ourselves by trying on all the colors and checking them out with our skin tone in the mirror. Yep, that's right - dorks strike again..lmao. In the end I ended up with a pretty bright blue and Jane got a nice army green.
The Knitter's Keep = AMAZING. Solves so many of my problems - losing my stitch markers, losing my cable needle, losing my darning needle etc. I mean seriously ladies, pop this super fun bracelet on (did I mention it's a snap bracelet which is also equally as addictive and fun) on and never worry about losing some of your pretty notions again! When I'm working on shawls or seaming etc I always need multiple tools handy and this makemy life so much easier.
We also got to meet Julie Weisenberger (Coco Knits) which was a thrill in itself! I'm a big fan of her work and her business! So it was a highlight of the trip to get to have some time to chat with her! So exciting!
/// JILL DRAPER MAKES STUFF
I was so excited to get to meet Jill Draper. I'm a big fan of her work and had been wanting to see her yarns and meet her in person for ages. I spent way too long at this booth and I'm sure made a fool of myself gushing over her more than a few times. In the end I left with this scrumptious skein of Rockwell - Naturemade 2014 that is 100% Cormo-Merino Crossbred Wool. I must have picked this skein up more than few times so in the end it's the one that came home with me. I couldn't bear to leave without it.
I also picked up the most adorable notebook. You all know my addiction to notebooks and this one is my new fave. The Kitchener Stitch is inside as well as needle guide and ruler! And those illustrations? Swoon! Def one of my fave new lovelies. You can also find Jill as one of the instructors on Creativebug. She's got a slew of fun classes available on there as well.
/// HIYA HIYA NEEDLES
Now for the big splurge. Jane and I have been on the hunt for new needles for over 4+ years. I think we've tried almost every needle out there (or at least attempted to). Every time we go to an event we go to the needle sampling booths and try them all out and leave empty handed. We have a checklist and some of the other sets (while gorgeous and nice) left some of our boxes unchecked. This time when we went to the Hiya Hiya booth it was both of our first times trying out their needles. It was love at first knit...lol. I think I sat stunned for a few minutes as it sunk in that we had finally found "our set". Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with my Knit Picks Interchangeables (I have the nickel plated set and still really enjoy them) but I've been wanting another set to go with it.
I got the Hiya Hiya Limited Edition Set of 5" Sharps Stainless Steel. Here are some of my fave things about the Hiya Hiya's:
1) How sharp and air light they are.
2) That the tips have the sizes on them.
3) That the cables have the sizes on them too! YESSSS!!!
4) Did I mention how light and sharp they are? Two of my fave things.
5) This is a biggie for me - that the join didn't bother me. I don't like when I can feel the join and with these it was no issue at all.
6) I like that I don't need a tool or key. Just some simple rubber grips to tighten and loosen them.
7) The kit starts at size 2.75mm and goes up to 8mm.
8) You can convert them to straights if you want to.
The Limited Edition Interchangeable set included so many goodies too! It comes with the following:
- 13 sets of 5" Interchangeable tips
- case
- 4 cables (18", 26", 34", 42")
- small cable connectors
- small tip adaptor
- panda stoppers (small and large)
- single point adaptors (small and large)
- puppy snip
- darn it's
- knitters safety pins
It was like Christmas! I'm loving them so far and am super happy to finally have a new set to knit with. Do you any of you have Hiya Hiya's? Do you love them too?
I also picked up a delicious smelling new wool wash called Allure in the scent Woodland Mist (shown in very first picture in this post). This is made from Bijou Basin Ranch and it smells divine! It's also an all natural formulat that contains no dyes, enzymes or phosphates, no optical brighteners and no formaldehyde.
I can't wait to share with you the second part to the recap next week. Were any of you at Stitches West? What have you splurged on lately to add to your knitting stash? Fill me in, I want to hear all about it!
NEW PATTERN || LOSLASSEN SHAWL!
I'm so excited to be able to release our newest knitting pattern -
Loslassen! Loslassen is a uniquely shaped shawl that flatters the figure!
Garter ridges paired with feminine lace openwork within a uniquely shaped shawl create a lovely juxtaposition that is both flattering & easy to wear.
Loslassen drapes with ease & style mimicking the look of raglan shaping slimming the frame & showcase hand-dyed yarn beautifully.
Loslassen is made from 2 skeins of the lovely Neighborhood Fiber Co. yarn Studio Sock(fingering) shown in colorway Columbus Circle. It's such a lovely and soft light blue. I immediately was smitten with it. I designed Loslassen for the shop A Grand Yarn. They have a fun monthly yarn club called The Indie Club and my pattern was the February selection. It was so neat to do a club pattern! I really enjoyed it and now I get to release the pattern to all of you too! Loslassen will work great with your current fave fingering weight yarn crush! Pick your fave color of the season and get knitting!
I really wanted Loslassen to be able to be worn multiple ways and to also sit uber-comfortably on the shoulders all while slimming the frame. I love the way the raglan-esque shaping on the shoulders allows this shawl to sit almost like you're wearing a cardigan. It's so comfy and now that I have my sample back I've hardly taken it off!
or you can get your copy of LOSLASSEN here:
VERY SHANNON \\\ RAVELRY \\\ ETSY
Loslassen has an addicting combination of an easy to memorize lace openwork and simple Garter ridges. I think an Intermediate Beginner could easily tackle this pattern. I really enjoyed knitting it and hope you all will too! Have some fun with it!
A special thank you to my friend Summer for allowing me to shoot in her gorgeous home on the lake and her beautiful cousin Kailee for modelling so patiently for me. Thank ladies!

CREATIVITY || MAKING OURSELVES # 2 - YOUR HOBBIES ARE IMPORTANT
When starting to write + plan the new series "Making Ourselves" for the blog I quickly realized how long it has really and truly been since I had prioritized some of my other hobbies and passions in life. I decided that it was time to carve out some special moments each week to allow myself a few indulgences.

The FREE Bucket Basket Tote Sewing Pattern is here!!!
I'm addicted to totes, baskets, project bags & more! Pretty much if I can put my latest knitting project in it and bring it around with me I'm addicted to it. I can never have enough. One of my favorite things to store my wip's in and misc yarn is my Basket.
I was lucky enough to pick up my basket from Tolt Yarn & Wool Shop last spring and I adore it. I've been on the hunt since then for the same style but in a shopping tote size. Well I finally got tired of looking around to buy with no success that I decided to design a tote that's inspired by the shape of the African Shopper Tote.
I just knew when I spotted the new fabric lineWanderer by the oh so amazing April Rhodes forArt Gallery Fabrics, that it was the PERFECT fabric for my new Bucket Basket Tote! I loved the tribal vibe and the color palette! So I'm more than thrilled to be a part of April's fabric tour for Wanderer today! All the prints I used were from the Air palette. I used Serape-Dream, Sacred Seeds Brittle, Temple of Asiaq, Crochetting Clouds, Gust of Leaves Silver and Sacred Seeds Mojave.
So pick out your fave Wanderer prints to feature and get sewing your very own Bucket Basket Tote! It's easy, fun to make and such a cute tote! It fits infinite amounts of goodies and features a pocket inside. There's not too many bells on whistles on this tote as I wanted to keep the shape of the Bucket Basket the star of the bag. I also wanted to let you have some fun with customizing it as you go!
I'm dreaming of versions of this quilted, with piecing in the mid portion, embroidery etc. I was dying to make my straps out of leather but I just couldn't get my hands on leather straps in time for the pattern release. I hope to do one in the future though. I'd like to do the bag in some faux leather mixed in with a fun print! See....so many options! You know how I love that and I hope you all do too!

SALE || SWEETHEART DRESS UPDATE & VALENTINE'S SALE!
Valentine's day is coming up and it's time for our annual Valentine's Sweetheart Dress Sale!
I've spent time over the last few months to update my Sweetheart Dress Pattern to match our current branding and aesthetic. Since it came out a few years ago it definitely didn't match any of our current pattern styling etc. so it's gotten a much needed face lift.
The pattern itself and instructions have remained the same. All that's been updated is the styling, layout and the inclusion of both inches and centimeters for measurements in the pattern. So don't worry if you have the old version. All is still fine. There is no errata. If you would prefer to have the newer version please email me at askveryshannon@gmail.com with proof of purchase (sometimes I can find your sale based on email address and where you purchased from) and I will happily email you the latest version.
It's also Kids Clothes Week from Feb. 2nd - 8th! So I figured what better to dress to be sewing for this time of year than one with an adorable heart back cut out! So in honor of our update and KCW we're having a sale!
Use the coupon code "bemine15" to save 15% off the purchase of your Sweetheart Dress PDF sewing pattern! Yay! Coupon code valid until February 15th, midnight, PST. You can purchase the Sweetheart Dress in my shop HERE or on Etsy HERE.
Thank you to all of you for all your support of this pattern. It means so much. I love seeing all of your Sweetheart Dresses so make sure to tag them with hashtag #sweetheartdress on social media so I can see your handmade lovelies!
I hope you enjoy the new updates! Happy sewing!

CREATIVITY || MAKING ME & MAKING OURSELVES
This year is all about changes and the search for BALANCE.
I find that sitting down at the start of each year and writing out some of my thoughts, goals, dreams etc for the upcoming year helps me to solidify my plans, keep me motivated in achieving them and also connecting with all of you.
"Life is 10% what happens to us, and 90% how we react to it."
This year I want to focus on the word BALANCE as much as possible. I keep promising myself I will work on it, practice it and live it but it just hasn't been successful. So this year I'm taking a different approach and holding myself accountable and putting it onto the blog. I'm going for it. I'm all in my friends. It's time to take back a bit of control over my life and to start to put some more effort/time back into "making" me a better version of myself.
I'll be using the hashtag #makingourselves (I explain this later on in the post) on instagram & twitter if you want to join in and also follow along with my journey.
BALANCE /// GOAL #1 - My Health
I've had health issues since I was in my twenties.
Long story short I've suffered from severe endometriosis (several surgeries and complications) and back issues. I'm tired of feeling not well and continually getting sick. My immune system is just shot. So I'm taking control of my body back this year. I'm putting my health and my overall well being ahead of all my other goals this year and so far it's been amazing! I'm hoping to get stronger and healthier and also lose some weight.
My hubby surprised me with a Fitbit for xmas (I got the Charge in case you're interested) and I've been really loving it. It's amazing how such a small gadget can wake you up to your unhealthy habits and motivate you to be so much better. Between seeing how HORRIBLE my sleep habits are (more on this later) and how much better my days are when I reach over my goal of 10,000 steps it sure is motivating.
I paired my Fitbit up with the awesome app My Fitness Pal. These 2 are my best friends. I've been logging my food daily now for over a month and I am really enjoying holding myself accountable. I'm also enjoying the community of friends/family on both the Fitbit and My Fitness Pal to cheer, encourage and have fun with the journey of getting healthy. Do any of you use these? Are you on Fitbit and MyFitnessPal?
I also took a VERY hard and long look at my exercise habits. Walking the kids to school and back (when it's not monsooning out) just isn't cutting it. I realized over the last few years I've tried a few different types of workouts (classes, etc) and nothing stuck. I'm social and love the gym but it doesn't work for our nutso schedule around here. So we bit the bullet and brought the gym to us. We're the proud owners of an Elliptical machine. I know...it sounds so cliche to go buy an elliptical in January but dudes....I so need this. That bad boy is right beside my bed.....I can jump on and do my workout wearing whatever I want and watching Gilmore Girls (or whatever tv show I'm addicted to at the moment). Being able to easily fit it in when I get the chance that day is so easy. I even started rewarding myself. I can't do my night time knitting until I do my workout. And trust me, I love to knit so I will darn sure get my booty on the elliptical.
Getting the elliptical made me realize just how out of shape I really am. I thought I was going to jump on the elliptical and be a pro. LMAO!!!!! Seriously. Embarrassing. I thought I was going to die. I just barely made it through 15mins of the darn thing and almost puked...haha. And I was on level 1!!!!! Then the hubs proceeded to get on and do 30mins at a high level and was fine! How's that for motivation? I thought I was in way better shape than I was. So many muscles I haven't used in so long that are now having to be woken up again. I still can only do about 15mins but I'm working myself up and each time I do it I'm getting stronger and it's getting easier. My goal is 30-40 mins at obviously a better intensity level than 1. But I don't want to injure my back (I have a very bad back) so I have to take it slow and steady and keep on trucking along.
The most hilarious part is when I'm on the elliptical I get a side view of myself in the dresser mirror. I'm telling you...if you feel unmotivated put your elliptical near a mirror from this angle. HORRIFYING! It's like a weird mix of self doubt and motivation mixed in together. I look over and first go..."who is that, is that me? how did I get like this? since when I did I let it go this far? really is that me? are you sure? ok, let's do this. time to get rid of...."that thing" hanging.....darn pregnancy leftovers...time to work our ass off. time to reclaim my health and become strong again....but can I do it? will I fail? I'm tired. It's too hard. I can't do it. I should just give up. but I don't want to. I want to do it. I want to become a better me. Is that really me? how did I get like this?". And it repeats over and over again until I just get on with my workout and accept myself for who I am and make peace with it and enjoy my workout (well as much as one can whilst working out).
Why am I telling you all of this? Because. Because I'm not perfect. Because I spend so much time making throughout my days, everyday. I'm always making and creating and I love every crazy wild moment of it. I love to make things. I love to help you to make things. But the one thing I haven't been working on making that is the most important out of them all is myself. I haven't been making myself. I am important too and I need to continue to work on making me be the best version of myself I can be just as much as I make my knitting/sewing patterns the best they can be.
My priorities need to shift a bit. So while you may not see me blogging like a mad woman, I'm still here. I'm trying to keep the 9 loads of laundry on my bed under control, my dirty bathrooms cleaned, my floor mopped, the kids & hubby happy and fed, finish unpacking my new house, raise two little girls, keep on creating and making, and writing and spending time with all of you. But before most of that I now need to spend some time reflecting and working on myself. I can't wait to look back in 2016 at 2015 and see how far I have come. I can't wait to watch me finally succeed with some of the balance. To get more control over the battle between health, family and work. My family and my health are way too important and I've seen how unbalanced things have become and I know I need to keep on making changes.
Don't worry, I'm not turning Very Shannon into a fitness blog...lol. It will still be the same, I will just be popping in here and there throughout the year and writing some of my thoughts about my journey this year and my goals. I just shared Goal #1 above and I plan on sharing more of my goals as well that all correlate to the word "balance". I encourage you to join in too! I love seeing and hearing about what you're all doing creatively and I strongly feel that we as women are also important as well so fill me in. Write in the comments. Share your thoughts, goals and dreams for this year too. It means so much to me to hear from all of you as well.
Use hashtag #MAKINGOURSELVES to share your journey on social media.
I'd love to see your pics! Whether you are working out, working on a new goal....etc..whatever makes this your year to work on "YOU" feel free to share it with this hashtag. I also made us a fun pinterest board where I'll be pinning inspiring images, posts, sewing patterns for workout gear, workout clothes I love, exercises and more! You can follow along below.
So I'm declaring this year the year of "making ourselves". Get creative with and for YOU. What do you wish you could work on "making" better for YOUR happiness and goals this year? What's unbalanced in your life that you can work on "making" happen? What have you not prioritized enough in the past that you can change this year?
